Mark McLaughlin, “The Storm King”, is an award-winning, nationally published author, professional speaker, and photographer with six books and more than 650 articles in print.

He will present a multimedia presentation on his newest book, "The Donner Party: Weathering the Storm" at the South Lake Library on June 18 at 6 p.m.

Incidents of human trafficking and the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) are becoming more prevalent in the County of El Dorado and more and more common throughout the country.

From 2010 to 2012, the El Dorado County Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) was aware of 3 CSEC cases. From 2013 to present, HHSA is aware of 15 additional CSEC cases, most of which are children in the foster care and/or probation system.

Antique bottles will be the subject of a program presented by the Lake Tahoe Historical Society on Saturday, April 12th. Mark S. Morris, the author of "Mark's Bottles: 50 Years of Collecting" will give his presentation from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Museum located at 3058 Lake Tahoe Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

California Governor Jerry Brown has called for a 20% reduction in water usage state wide in order to prepare for the anticipated water shortage not only for 2014, but also in coming years.

A presentation was made by South Tahoe Public Utility District at Tuesday's City Council Meeting on just how everyone can cut back, from private homes to city projects.

Long range planning is important for communities to survive cutbacks to water supplies. The District outlined their response to conservation:

The 2014 monthly lecture series from UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center begins January 28 with a presentation on the dangers of radon. Eric Matus of the Nevada Radiation Control Program will lead a public lecture titled “Radon: What you don’t know could hurt you” beginning at 6 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.

The lecture will be at Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences, 291 Country Club Drive, Incline Village, Nevada (on the campus of Sierra Nevada College). No-host bar at 5:30 p.m., lecture at 6:30 p.m.

What’s the future of the Lake Tahoe Airport? South Lake Tahoe residents, businesses and interested citizens are invited to hear about the possibilities and weigh-in at an Airport Master Plan meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, at 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Airport.

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center presents an enlightening public lecture on the science of music on Thursday, February 6. Entitled “Music, Memory and the Brain,” it features Dr. Petr Janata of the UC Davis Center for Mind and Brain and his research on neurological links between music and memories.

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center’s monthly lecture series continues with a presentation on water rights at Pyramid Lake on Thursday, November 14. Dr. Kate Berry, Professor of Geography at the University of Nevada, Reno, will discuss her research at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences.

TahoeChamber is now accepting nominations for the 6th Annual Blue Ribbon Awards. After six years, this prestigious awards program has grown from three key awards to eight including Tourism, Geotourism, Entrepreneur, Experience, Large & Small Green Business, and Customer Service.

Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. Saturday’s Sip & Shop at Après Wine Company drew more than 20 people to taste C.G. Di Arie wines and gourmet cheeses.

Very few community members turned out for the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project meeting held at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on Thursday night. Invitations were mailed and/or hand delivered to all residents in the proposed project area so they’d be able to better understand the process of relocation and financial reimbursement should the Revitalization Project be approved. Since many of those invited speak Spanish and Tagalog, interpreters were on hand to assist with translations, but no one in attendance needed their services.

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center releases the annual Lake Tahoe: State of the Lake Report on Wednesday, August 7. Director Geoff Schladow will present the most important factors that affect lake health at a public presentation at the Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nevada on August 7 at 6 p.m.

The Lake of the Sky Amphitheater programs at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center begin July 5 and continue every Friday evening through the end of August. The series kicks off Friday, July 5, with "Wild Things" featuring an educational look at Sierra Nevada native animals live on stage at 7 p.m.

Programs in July include: “Snowshoe Thompson” on July 12 at 7 p.m.; “Winged flight at Night” on July 19 at 8:30 p.m.; and “Fly Fishing in the Lake Tahoe Basin” on July 26 at 6:30 p.m.
