Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets project closer to summer 2018 construction

Funded by grants, the .6 mile stretch of Sierra Boulevard starting at Highway 50 will have Class 1 and Class 2 bike lanes, parallel parking spots, reduced lane size, lighted sidewalks, underground utilities, landscaping, crosswalks and water quality improvements.

Fixing our roads protects Lake Tahoe, and is a critical complement to the advocacy by the League and many others to reduce pollution associated with Tahoe’s traffic. Taking action now is essential if we are to restore the Lake to its historic clarity.
Highway 50 roadwork in South Lake Tahoe extended through November
Submitted by paula on Tue, 10/31/2017 - 8:24amConstruction on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe will be extended through the end of November, weather permitting. The work remaining includes the installation of new traffic signals at Tahoe Keys Boulevard and 3rd Street.
Expect lane closures and extra traffic on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe from the "Y" to Winnemucca Avenue during these final stages.
The project is a three-year one and includes water quality improvements, a new stop light at Lodi, timed traffic lights from the Y to Trout creek, bike lanes, bus pull outs, sidewalks and retaining walls.
Active military families treated to weekend in Lake Tahoe

The mission of the program was to weave family activities that blend adventure and communication workshops into the retreat weekend. The families were nurtured and challenged physically, emotionally and mentally while they worked together and thrived through fun and engaging challenges on the SEA, AIR, and LAND.

Douglas County forming housing task force

This has been in the works since July when they entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Nevada Rural Housing Authority “For Creating a Viable Path to Achieving Affordable Housing for Douglas County, Nevada.”
Part of the Board of County Commissioners Strategic Plan includes evaluating the potential of offering affordable housing development incentives through the update of the Housing Element of the Master Plan.

NAMI El Dorado County is hosting an information gathering hour on Thursday, November 2 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Lake Tahoe Community College's Aspen Room.
They would like the public's perspective as El Dorado County Behavioral Health is seeking public input for their FY18/19 Mental Health Services Plan Update.
The county will be providing public meetings, using social media, and promoting in news media to get the word out about the plan, so attendance and input at this meeting will help them plan.
Special City Council meeting to vote on urgency VHR ordinance
Submitted by paula on Wed, 10/18/2017 - 12:53amIf anyone thought they knew how the South Lake Tahoe City Council was going to vote on the proposed Vacation Home Rental (VHR) Ordinance on Tuesday they were most likely surprised with the turn of events after hours of public comment and Council discussion.
City staff had two weeks to create a new Vacation Home Rental Ordinance based on input and bring it to the Council to vote on a first reading October 17.
The City Council has sought to create an ordinance that both recognizes and protects the City's vibrant VHR industry while also improving the quality of life of the citizens.

Revived interest in sale of Kingsbury Middle School

Lake Tahoe Community College shines during accreditation team visit

"You guys do a great job," said Mike Claire, President at College of San Mateo and leader of the visiting accreditation team from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). "We have never found a college more well prepared than LTCC."
Air quality in El Dorado County affected by Northern California fires

County health officials are reminding residents to take precautions should wildfire smoke impact the areas in which they live, work and recreate. According to Air Pollution Control Officer Dave Johnston, wildfires can produce smoke that causes health problems, particularly for children, older people and those with heart disease or respiratory issues.
Johnston advises residents to limit outdoor activity if they see or smell smoke.

Over $3.3M awarded to Lake Tahoe area projects

Wednesday, September 13, the new 4,305 square foot building with its environmental improvements opened to the public at 11:30 a.m. That was 117 days since we saw old, 40-year-old building come down.
Inside, diners will see a sleek new design with automated ordering stations and plenty of seating.

Occupancy, density and caps of SLT VHRs topic of long meeting

Interested residents and other stakeholders in the City's proposed changes to the VHR ordinance not only filled chambers, but filled seats surrounding televisions in the lobby where the proceedings were aired.
After almost six hours of presentation and conversation, the City Council voted to bring back the new ordinance in one month on October 5.
"Our job is to make a decision, not continuing to kick the can down the road," said SLT Mayor Austin Sass.
Pine Nut Harvest 2017: Season begins on Nevada public lands

Both agencies are working together to ensure the public is safely harvesting pine nuts and aware of the regulations.
The length of the pine nut harvest season varies depending on crop quality and seasonal weather conditions. It is generally September to late October when pine nuts are available for harvest.

Expect Kingsbury Grade lane closures as roadwork begins
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/01/2017 - 5:17pmA $4 million project to enhance 15,000 feet or eroding roadway drainage pipe on Kingsbury Grade will begin on Sept. 11 and last through late summer of 2018, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced today.
Single lane closures with a traffic flagger will periodically be in place on the Carson Valley side of Kingsbury Grade between mileposts 3 and 11. Most of the work will take place Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. with periodic Saturdays lane closures.
Construction on new trail near Incline Village suspended for holiday
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/01/2017 - 4:34pmDue to anticipated heavy holiday traffic near Incline Village this Labor Day weekend, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has put work on hold at the State Route 28 shared-used path Saturday, Sept. 2 through Monday, Sept. 4.
NDOT and Granite Construction officials timed current work to be at a point where State Route 28 could be accessible in both directions for the weekend. Work will remain in progress through Friday, Sept. 1 and will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 7:00 a.m.
City of South Lake Tahoe looks at temporary ban of marijuana sales

Residents forced to evacuate as fire in Yosemite grows

Called the Sierra Boulevard Complete Streets Project, work is expected to get underway on the .6 mile stretch of road in the summer of 2018, but not everyone is happy about it.
At the first of two community information meetings on Thursday night, City and NCE representatives gave an overview of the planned project, had a question and answer period and shared preliminary designs of Sierra Blvd.

Douglas County narrows search down to two for Asst. County Manager position
Submitted by paula on Mon, 08/14/2017 - 10:58pmThe search for a new Assistant County Manager for Douglas County is almost over as Bradley Hurley and Philip Ritger have been chosen as the final two candidates. The public is invited to meet the two on August 21 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Carson Valley Inn.
Last Monday, panel interviews were conducted for eight applicants, and from that group Hurley and Ritger were chosen to be interviewed by County Manager Larry Werner.
Ritger is the current Town of Genoa Manager and Hurley the Deputy Communications Officer with the Department of Defense. Both are residents of Douglas County.

Air quality issues close Bank of the West in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/01/2017 - 3:13pm8:00 p.m. update: Road construction on Highway 50 is what led to the closure of Bank of the West in South Lake Tahoe.
"Nearby construction resulted in an air quality issue at our South Tahoe Branch, which was quickly identified and is being remedied," Anita Fox, Senior Vice President of Public Relations and Corporate Communications for Bank of the West told South Tahoe Now this evening. "We anticipate re-opening the branch no later than Thursday."
In the meantime, those wishing to conduct in-branch transactions can visit the bank's Tahoe City Branch at 150 West Lake Boulevard.
Water restored to Tahoe Keys Marina
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/28/2017 - 10:13am4:30 p.m. update: At 3:35 p.m. Friday afternoon the water was turned back on at the Tahoe Keys Marina. The two parties, Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association and Tahoe Keys Marina Management Inc., were able to work out an arrangement to get things flowing again.
The marina's lawyer Michael Matuska said he will file notice with the court to vacate the August 3 hearing as the two parties will be working on a continued relationship out of court.
Matuska did not release the specifics of the arrangement that restored the water service which has been down since July 11.
Clearing skies in Lake Tahoe; Some evacuations from Detwiler Fire lifted
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/21/2017 - 11:57amResidents are now being told they can return to their Mariposa, Calif. homes after being evacuated by the Detwiler Fire which started on July 16.
As of 11:30 a.m. Friday, the fire has burned 74,083 acres and is now 15 percent contained.
Since the fire is still threatening 1,500 structures many other evacuations remain in place. 58 homes and 60 minor structures have been destroyed with another 17 residences and structures damaged.
The nearby Maria Fire on Mokelume Hill in Calaveras County is now 117 acres and 95 percent contained.
Public has opportunity to comment on new Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan

Stakeholders have been working collaboratively in developing solutions to both manage natural resources while improving access to the lake for recreational purposes.
The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, (TRPA) is asking for public comment as they go through the process of preparing a draft environmental impact statement for the proposed Lake Tahoe Shoreline Plan.

Visitors and residents are heading to beaches and launching boats, kayaks, and standup paddleboards to get out and enjoy the jewel of the Sierra. Millions of people visit Tahoe each year and the shoreline is where they go to experience its famously cold, clear, blue water.
Detwiler Fire burns 70,596 acres; Haze expected Friday in Lake Tahoe-Reno-Carson City area
Submitted by paula on Thu, 07/20/2017 - 9:48am7:45 p.m. update: There is less smoke in the Lake Tahoe basin this evening but air quality is still measuring in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range. The Detwiler Fire is burning in drought stricken chaparral and in an area of severe tree mortality and has consumed 70,596 acres and is now 10 percent contained.
As of tonight, 50 residences and 49 other structures have been destroyed and widespread evacuation orders are still in place.
Widespread haze over Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City areas is forecast again for Friday.

Lake Tahoe air quality to continue in the unhealthy range
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/19/2017 - 3:36pmThe intensifying Detwiler Fire near Mariposa, Calif. continues to send smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin, Alpine County, Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley, causing air quality to be in the unhealthy range.
As of Wednesday morning the Detwiler fire had burned over 45,000 acres, sending a plume of smoke due north, into our area. It is 7 percent contained and caused the evacuation of the town of Mariposa as well as many surrounding roads and neighborhoods.
Tahoe Trail Bar awarded Whole Foods entrepreneur grant

Whittel grad Nic Buccholz awarded Gene Upshaw award

Buccholz was honored during the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe on Tuesday. The $5,000 college scholarship is funded equally by NBC Sports and Edgewood Companies.
The scholarship was started in honor of the former Oakland Raider, NFL Hall of Famer and executive director of the NFL Players Association who played during the South Lake Tahoe golf tournament for several years.
USFS to start chemical treatment of invasive species in Lake Tahoe

Their focus will be on 90 sites covering 18.25 acres of sites inside the Lake Tahoe Basin.
