Monthly snow survey canceled due to lack of snow

Due to the prospect of finding only bare ground, the Department of Water
Resources (DWR) did not conduct a May 1 snow survey at Phillips Station at the top of Echo Summit near Sierra-at-Tahoe.

“We can’t count on the Sierra snowpack to replenish our water supplies,” said California Department of Water Resources Director Mark Cowin. “Major reservoirs are dropping at a time when they typically would be filling with melted snow. We need careful, sparing use of water across the state, because we don’t know when this drought will end.”

While Lake Clarity Results Are Positive, New Challenges Loom

The University of California, Davis and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency recently released their yearly water clarity readings for Lake Tahoe. The good news: Mid-lake water clarity improved significantly in 2014, with an average reading of 77.8 feet. That’s 7.5 feet greater than the average reading for 2013, and almost 14 feet greater than the 64.1 feet measured in 1997, Lake Tahoe’s lowest recorded clarity.

Op/Ed: Euthanizing Bears: Can You Bear It?

The majority of Tahoe locals and tourists lack knowledge of bear precaution, causing the growing presence of bears in South Lake Tahoe’s residential areas. In recent years, Lake Tahoe’s black bears have become problematic when outside their natural meadow and forest habitat. Because of human habits, bears have become attracted to local neighborhoods. Passing routines down to their cubs, bears remain dependent on the human food source left outside many residents’ homes.

Crowd expected as South Lake Tahoe City Council looks at vacation home rental ordinance

There are many sides to the South Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rental (VHR) situation. On one side are the locals whose peaceful lives have been disturbed because they are the neighbors of vacation home rentals that are reportedly out of control with excess noise and trash that come from inconsiderate renters. On another side are the people wanting to enjoy South Lake Tahoe from the comfort of a private home. Yet another side are the second home owners who want to earn money from their vacation home.

After weeks of spring-like conditions on the slopes, several inches of snow greeted skiers and boarders Saturday morning as a storm passed through Lake Tahoe.

Hike 500 Miles in One Season

In the summer of 2013, I walked a demanding 500 miles and I'm damn proud of it.

After working 60-80 hour weeks for nine months, living in a crowded city, and becoming one of the thousands of tired, nerve-shaken souls John Muir spoke about, I realized the famous naturalist was right when he said, "going to the mountains is going home."

Benefits of Reading and Singing to Your Child

Can you recall a favorite nursery rhyme from childhood? How about a favorite book? Some of my early favorites were the “Incy Wincy Spider” song and “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you See?” picture book.

Early language development is intricately linked to a child’s exposure to reading, talking, and singing starting from infancy. Though infants may not talk back, research shows a child’s language exposure at an early age predicts his or her success in school.

Opinion: What's up with recycling program in South Lake Tahoe?

Hello!

My name is Keely Kapsoff and after reading an article that was posted up in Incline I realized that I too needed to write a story about my concern with the recycling program in Tahoe.

Well it all started a few years ago when I moved back here and I brought my recyclables into the dump, I did this for many months and realized that every time I gave the guy a bag he would just throw it on top of all the trash. I asked many employees why we don't just have a place to put all the blue bags? All responded that there is a conveyor belt and it sorts it.

oops North Shore sure has their act together when it comes to events
and how to put them on. They work with promoters who don't threaten
them and are willing to compromise to bring world class events to
their side of the lake.

Although I must admit they do not, for the most part, have to deal
with the TRPA and councils that don't have the best interest of their
own community at heart. Now I am not saying that our council is
totally dysfunctional, only a little. Most everything that is getting
