Boulder lands on roof of car on US50 west of Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A driver heading westbound on US50 over Echo Summit got a little more than they bargained for Wednesday afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) received a call at 1:30 p.m. January 13 from a person traveling on the highway that a rock "the size of a Yeti Cooler" was on the roadway, according to Officer Ruth Loehr. CHP responded and found not only the 2ft x 3ft boulder in the roadway, they also found the vehicle that it hit.

Small New Year's Eve crowds at Stateline keep US50 open

STATELINE, Nev. - It was a much quieter holiday at Stateline this year with a decrease in calls for service, five arrests, and the lowest number of New Year's celebrants in a few decades.

US 50, the highway that runs from South Lake Tahoe into Stateline was not closed due the low number of people in the area. Law enforcement was able to keep those wanting to bring in the new year outside to the sidewalk or they stayed inside the casinos.

"The celebrants were well behaved and embraced the New Year’s Eve celebration," said Douglas County Undersheriff Ron Elges.

Tahoe Douglas Fire asks residents to "Adopt a Fire Hydrant" this winter

There are 761 hydrants in the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and they are looking for residents to "adopt" them by making sure they are shoveled out after each storm and kept cleared all winter.

The Nevada water districts and TDFPD urge everyone to get involved and join the effort by adopting a hydrant near their residence.

Illegal parking on Lake Tahoe highways continue to create safety hazards

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many head to the Sierra to experience snow in all forms, from the ski slopes to sledding and building snowmen. Even during the pandemic and current "Stay-at-Home" orders in California, area roads were full this past holiday weekend with those seeking play time in the snow.

Each year, law enforcement has to deal with those who seem to have forgotten the laws of being safe on the roadway and parking on the highways, and not observing "no parking" zone rules.

South Shore Transportation Management Association reactivated with new website, new focus

The nonprofit South Shore Transportation Management Association (SSTMA) has been reactivated to serve as a community forum for the advancement of transportation, transit and community mobility solutions.

It was formed originally in 1994 after a study was conducted to determine the most effective way to engage the private sector in transportation on the South Shore. Over the years its focus moved from the development of the Nifty Fifty trolley system to transportation initiatives and the formation of the Tahoe Transportation District.

First storm of the season drops snow around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has been busy this morning with vehicles stuck in the snow around Lake Tahoe and on the surrounding mountain passes. Meyers is reporting 12" of snow, South Lake Tahoe 9.5", Genoa 7", Alpine Meadows 7" and the Gardnerville Ranchos up to 14".

This is a good day to stay off the roads. If driving, follow all controls, give yourself distance from the car in front of you, and take your time. The storm is moving out of the area but there will be some lingering snow until around 1:30 p.m.

Victim in fatal head-on collision identified as South Lake Tahoe resident

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - The victim of Tuesday's deadly crash on US Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove has been identified as a South Lake Tahoe resident.

At 6:25 p.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to a head-on collision at Douglas County miler marker 3.

The NHP preliminary investigation shows a black 2011 Dodge Ram pickup was traveling eastbound on the highway approaching a right curve in the roadway. At that same time, a gray 2003 Honda Element was approaching the same curve as the driver headed westbound.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - Sierra Nevada Construction is underway with the Douglas County Centerville Lane Reconstruction Project. They are currently working to start their final full culvert crossing replacement. During this work period, through access on Centerville Lane will be lost at the culvert location shown on the map above.

Man airlifted to Reno after serious motorcycle crash on SR89

A Wellington, Nevada man was flown by a Careflight medical helicopter to Reno after going over a cliff with his motorcycle Saturday night.

At 5:00 p.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) says Troy Costa, Sr. was riding his Harley southbound on SR89 about a mile north of the SR4 junction when he failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway. Their report says Costa was ejected from the motorcycle as it went over a cliff adjacent to the East Fork of the Carson River.

He sustained severe injuries and transported by air to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and Tahoe Fund collaborate on new bike racks around lake

Due to the collaboration of the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and Tahoe Fund, over 100 more racks were installed in town centers in the Tahoe Basin this summer. Together, the nonprofits have worked together to install nearly 450 bike racks during the past three years, offering secure parking for 900 bikes.

With a grant from the Tahoe Fund and matching contributions from local businesses, the nonprofit Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition completed the third phase of its efforts to create secure bike parking within the Tahoe Basin.

Fatal crash south of Lake Tahoe near Blue Lakes claims life of 74-year-old Dayton man

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe is reporting a fatal collision Wednesday on Blue Lakes Road off of SR88 south of Lake Tahoe.

In the early morning hours of August 5, 74-year-old Michael Glenn Pace of Dayton, Nevada was traveling southbound on Blue Lakes Road, north of Sunset Lake Road, when he failed to negotiate a left curve in the road. CHP says Pace went onto the gravel shoulder and attempted to steer back onto the roadway but his vehicle overturned, tumbled 150 feet down a steep embankment and struck a tree.

Women injured in hit-and-run Lime scooter verses vehicle collision

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 31-year-old woman from Alexandria, Virginia is in a Reno hospital today after suffering severe injuries in a South Lake Tahoe hit-and-run collision.

At approximately 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, first responders arrived in the 3300 block of Pine Hill Road near Keller Road and found the victim laying in the roadway, suffering from severe injuries.

Oregon man dies in motorcycle crash on Kingsbury Grade

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Springfield, Oregon man died on Saturday after a crash on Kingsbury Grade/SR207.

At approximately 12:47 p.m. August 1, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a serious injury crash at Douglas County Mile Marker 10.

The NHP preliminary investigation shows that 62-year-old Kurt Kelso was traveling north on Kingsbury Grade on his 2003 Harley Davidson. As Kelso was negotiating a left curve his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a dirt mound. He was ejected and transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Nevada drivers can submit ideas for traffic safety messages on electronic signs

The Nevada Department of Transportation is inviting Nevada drivers to submit contest entries for creative traffic safety messages to be displayed on electronic freeway signs.

Last year, nearly 285 individuals were killed in Nevada traffic crashes. With over 90% of U.S. crashes caused in part by driver behavior, the message boards are an important driving safety reminder.

Lane closures over Spooner Summit for NDOT roadside drainage project

Single lane closures will take place on U.S. 50 between Carson City and Spooner Summit beginning July 30 as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) wraps up a project to reduce roadside erosion and help preserve water quality.

Between July 30 and Aug. 7, drivers will see single lane closures from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. weekdays on both directions of U.S. 50 in areas between Tahoe Golf Club Drive and Spooner Summit.

To help with safety on Lake Tahoe roads, new stoplight to be installed at Zephyr Cove in 2021

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - In a move to increase safety along the highway in Zephyr Cove, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) will be installing a new traffic signal at the intersection of US50 and Warrior Way next summer.

Almost 20,000 drivers travel that section of US50 on a daily basis. By controlling all directions of travel, the signal will help provide designated and safer access to and from the highway at the busy intersection.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Years of work by a team of professionals and public outreach has led to the release of the Draft State Route State Route 89 Recreation Corridor Management Plan.

Those who have been on this congested segment of roadway around Lake Tahoe are aware of the long list of issues including traffic issues, parking issues, and safety issues during the summer and popular weekends.

NDOT adding six "no parking" signs along SR28 near Incline Village

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Roadside parking along SR28 south of Incline Village has been problematic for years. Several "no parking" areas have been created over several miles to keep cars off the road to improve safety.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced Monday they will add "no parking" signs to enhance traffic safety on a section of State Route 28 in southeastern Incline Village.

Beginning July 13, NDOT will add six new “no parking” signs on the west, lakeside of State Route 28, extending from southern Lakeshore Boulevard to approximately 300 feet south.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to restrictions on gathering in groups because of COVID-19, Caltrans created a virtual ribbon cutting and "thank you" video highlighting their four-year $52.9M water quality improvement project on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe.

One arrested on multiple charges after head-on collision in Lake Tahoe

6/9/20 update: A 23-year-old man from Garden Valley, California has been arrested on multiple charges after being involved in a two-car Collison on US50 near Skyland at Lake Tahoe on June 8.

At approximately 6:05 p.m, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a serious injury crash involving a Honda Civic and Toyota Tacoma.

The crash closed both the eastbound and westbound travel lanes of the highway for several hours as emergency crews aided the victims, transported the two drivers to the hospital via helicopter, and cleared the scene.
