Fire Chief Ben Sharit named LTCC Distinguished Alumni

Lake Tahoe Community College has selected Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Chief Ben Sharit as its Distinguished Alumni Award winner for 2014.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary awards nearly $10,000 in scholarships

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club awarded nearly $10,000 in vocational and educational scholarships to local high school students this year. The ten winners attend either Whittell High School or South Tahoe High.

Whittell students who won the financial awards this year were Elizabeth Anderson, Tori Jimenez, Spencer Buchholz, Serena Libert, Kendal Ferris and Danica Bunnett for academics and Mark Waite and Margaret Ellis for vocational.

Three South Tahoe High students were awarded vocational scholarships this year: Gabriella Torres, Rebecca Wesson and Brandon Singleton.

Supervisor Candidate Angela Swanson: " We need to address the county’s dysfunctional culture"

South Tahoe Now sent a questionnaire out to all of the candidates for El Dorado County Supervisor and Douglas County Sheriff. This is the last of the submitted responses. Candidates Sue Novasel, Kenny Curtzwiler and Angela Swanson were the only County Supervisor candidates to respond, and Douglas County Sheriff candidates Ron Pierini and Dave Brady were the only Sheriff candidates to respond. Tahoe Douglas Rotary Holds Annual Burger Night to Raise Funds for Vocational Scholarships

The Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club is hosting their annual Burger Night at the Red Hut Café located at 3660 Lake Tahoe Blvd on Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The club, which is in their 51st year of providing service on the south shore of Lake Tahoe, will be using all proceeds from the evening to support their Vocational Scholarship Program at both Whittell High School and South Tahoe High School.

"Off the Wall Art Auction" in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe's 3rd Annual Off The Wall Art Auction will feature local and regional artists, including Phyllis Shafer. The event is being put on jointly by the South Lake Tahoe Rotary Club and the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation.

New this year will be a Kick-off party as well as four days of viewing before the main event, the auction. The Halden Gallery at LTCC will be the location of each day's activities.

Monday, March 24 - Kickoff Party from 5 to 7 pm
Tuesday, March 25 to Friday, March 28 - Viewing from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Edible Pedal 100 Bike Ride

The ride is open to 1,000 riders of all ages and abilities. It is expected to sell out. Register online.

Science springs to life at Lake Tahoe Expo

UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will host the eighth-annual Science Expo, together with Tahoe Expedition Academy, other community partners, and with sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline.

The Science Expo is open to the general public on the evening of Wednesday, March 20 from 4 – 6 p.m. for children of all ages together with their families at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. Ice cream will be provided by Susie Scoops of Incline Village. Admission is free.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary builds kiosks at local parks

Members of the 60 member strong Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club recently completed two kiosks for the public to use in the South Lake Tahoe area. The first one is located at Kahle Community Park and the second one is at the new Van Sickle Bi-State Park. The kiosks are now used to hold information, including maps of trails and topography as well as pictures and events. The club took on the projects as part of the worldwide volunteer work day.

Annual Lake Tahoe charity fishing derby, raffle and brunch on Sunday

Competition is on Lake Tahoe from one hour before sunrise to "High Noon" Sunday, June 3.
Prize money is awarded to anglers who reel in the largest Mackinaw $1,000, $500 Brown Trout, and $250 Rainbow Trout.
$50 entry fee includes Derby Entry, T-shirt, a wonderful Buffet Brunch (11:30 a.m. -1:00 p.m.), and Raffle.
Proceeds to benefit community charities through the Tahoe City Rotary Club Foundation.
