"Its not often you can come to City Council and look back to see how we got where we are today with such incredibly great news in such a short time," said South Lake Tahoe City Manager Nancy Kerry during Tuesday's City Council meeting.

Kerry highlighted the path the city has been on over the last 12 years, from the years leading to the recession, what happened during the recession, and where the city is headed now that there is a net positive cash flow of over $1,000,000.

The flu season is in full swing in South Lake Tahoe as well as across the country, prompting health officials to warn people of the severity.

This year the predominant flu strain in the United States is H1N1, the same one that caused the international pandemic in 2009-2010. Medical experts believe that this strain will take its toll on children and middle aged adults. So far this winter, 13 deaths have been attributed to the flu in North Carolina. In Hildago, Texas there have already been 6 deaths and 2 in Salt Lake City. Six children have died nationally during this flu season.

The 2nd Annual South Lake Tahoe Holiday Parade will be held on Saturday, December 14. Spectators will line the parade route from the top of Ski Run Blvd to TJMaxx at the Y. When the parade starts the forecast is sunny and 40 degrees.

Sometimes surprises come at the right time. Megan Kasden spoke through tears this week when she answered the phone and found out she had won the Gene Upshaw Memorial Fund Super Bowl raffle. The prize is an all-expense paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVIII at the Met Life Stadium. The raffle raised $30,000 for traumatic brain injury research and programs and services for cancer patients and families at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. The same center where Kasden’s husband, Gary had just completed a long series of chemotherapy treatments.

The Barton Foundation has been a cornerstone for The Barton Health Group for more than 20 years by providing excellent healthcare service to customers and also have been big players during the holiday season. This year’s Barton Festival of Trees and Lights will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Barton Health and Coldwell Banker Select will be contributing to the event in a major way. The franchise will be donating a gorgeous “sports themed” Christmas tree to the event, which will be auctioned off at the black tie gala event on December 7th.

Local property management company, Accommodation Station, has changed names to the Lake Tahoe Lodging Company. Vail Resorts purchased the company from locals Mike and Greta Hambsch in October of 2010.

The County of El Dorado and the Judges of the Superior Court of California, County of El Dorado, are pleased to announce that Brian Richart has accepted appointment as El Dorado County’s new Chief Probation Officer. A unique position under California law, the Chief Probation Officer is appointed by the judges of the Superior Court, with the Board of Supervisors setting the salary and benefit levels. Due to the importance of this position, the Superior Court worked collaboratively with the Sheriff’s Department and county officials to select the best possible candidate.

Gregory Cremeans recently joined the Coldwell Banker Select office in Zephyr Cove and is already off to a great start. Gregory has achieved the Cartus Network Affinity Specialist (CNAS) certification. The certification recognizes top performance and service to clients, as well as meeting goals within the organization. A hearty group of volunteers from Lake Tahoe Community College donated their time to Bread and Broth recently, helping to prepare and serve a hot meal to hungry locals as part of the Adopt a Day of Nutrition program. Four LTCC managers donned aprons and kitchen gloves to serve food, prepare giveaway bags, and assist with the cleanup.

South Lake Tahoe Councilwoman Angela Swanson has declared her candidacy for El Dorado County Supervisor District 5. "There is no better time to jump in," said Swanson of her announcement. "I am in the final year of my council term and will leave office having accomplished many of my goals and with an in-depth knowledge of the key issues affecting the district." Swanson cites economic redevelopment, smart growth and community investment as her top priorities along with building cohesiveness within the newly expanded district.

Tahoe Youth and Family Services is hosting their Annual Evening of Giving on December 11 at the agency's offices at 1021 Fremont Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. Refreshments will be served at the event which is from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Sierra-at-Tahoe® Resort has invested $5 million into a new facility located at the base of the mountain transforming the current skier services area into a mecca for gathering and services that improve the overall skier/boarder experience.

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials for their upcoming book sale. They would greatly appreciate materials only in good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2000. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish. The group would also like to limit audio/visual donations to DVDs & books on Tape/CD.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is working to open many Forest Service-operated facilities and restore public services that had been suspended during the government shutdown, which ended October 17, 2013. “Realizing we’re near the end of our normal operating season in Lake Tahoe, we’re focusing our efforts on those sites that typically remain open for a few more weeks and are extremely popular with locals and visitors alike,” said Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson. “We look forward to opening these and serving our local community once again.”

The El Dorado County Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) is offering free assistance to all Medicare beneficiaries in El Dorado County during Medicare's Annual Election Period that starts October 15, 2013 and ends December 7, 2013.

The Coldwell Banker Select office in Zephyr Cove is known for pushing it to the limit when securing great deals for their clients. However, the hard work of three agents also translates outside of the office. Last weekend, Pike Reardon, Jim Kilen and Penny Echan all participated in the North Tahoe/Truckee Ironman event, with Reardon and Kilen having big finishes, with Pike finishing 9th in his age group and 84th overall. Echan woke up at 2AM Sunday morning to get her kayak in the lake prior to the 5AM start time of the event.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services announces the resignation of Executive Director, Alissa Nourse. Nourse leaves the agency after nine years of exceptional work to accept a position with Alpine County as the Director of Behavioral Health, Alpine County, California.

Under Ms. Nourse's guidance the agency has steadily grown now providing services in South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Incline Village and Alpine County. The budget has grown from $450,000 to $1,600,000 allowing the agency to expand services and locations.

Denise has been involved in the Real Estate business for the past year as an escrow transaction coordinator and has a background in customer service, contract management and negotiation. The Coalition Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the successful implementation of projects, programs and activities to accomplish the mission of the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program grant as established by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (the Coalition) and managed by Tahoe Youth & Family Services. The Coalition Coordinator will mobilize the community to prevent and reduce youth substance use by effectively representing the Coalition and building partnerships and support in the community.
