Council members will start off with a recognition of the recent graduates of the South Tahoe Action Team (STAT) program.

Gunman identified in South Lake Tahoe drive-by shooting

11/3/15 - Update - The scene of the crime has now been reported as the dead-end portion of Spruce Avenue.

Original Story:

Authorities have identified the suspected shooter in last week's drive-by shooting in South Lake Tahoe.

Samuel Tovar, 26, of South Lake Tahoe is wanted for shooting at a 19-year-old man who was standing in a lot near the corner of Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard just before midnight on October 14, 2015. Police were called when the unidentified victim showed up at Barton Hospital with gunshot wounds to his leg.

Tahoe Chamber announces nominees for Blue Ribbon Awards

The Tahoe Chamber announced the nominations Tuesday for the 2015 Blue Ribbon Awards. There were 150 nominations received from the community for their annual awards program that recognizes exceptional South Shore businesses for excellence in service, entrepreneurship and experience among other areas.

South Lake Tahoe man wounded in drive-by shooting

A 19-year-old man was shot in the leg overnight, apparently the victim of a drive-by shooting near the intersection of Highway 50 and Ski Run Boulevard. Officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department were called to Barton Hospital just after midnight on the report of a man with a gunshot wound.

The unidentified man's injury is not life threatening according to SLTPD Lt. David Stevenson.

Since the shooting, police have recovered a truck near the "Y" that is suspected of being involved in the crime.

Dawgs on the Run hosting dog walk and costume contest

Dawgs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit, is continuing their series of fun, family and dog friendly walks with a costumed walk on Wednesday, October 14.

Wag, Waddle and Walk is the name of their monthly get-togethers which have been held all through town over the summer. Everyone is welcome to join them in the informal setting which always includes a test of a dog's skills (optional, so don't worry if your dog doesn't know any).

Open House at all three South Lake Tahoe fire stations

National Fire Week is October 4-10 this year, and in honor of it the City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue will have all three of their fire stations open to the public.

Each location will have different information, so visit one, or all.

There will be trucks on display, information about fire safety and raffle prizes.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tour the following SLT stations:

Fire Station #1 located at 1252 Ski Run Blvd.
Fire Station #2 located at 2951 Lake Tahoe Blvd.
Fire Station #3 located at 2101 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Big Brothers Big Sisters ribbon cutting at Tahoe Mountain Lab

Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County (BBBS) has served at-risk children since 1977, primarily on the Western Slope. On October 15, 2015, BBBS will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to announce the expansion of their programs into South Lake Tahoe.

The ceremony will take place from 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. at Tahoe Mountain Lab located at 1048 Ski Run Blvd. The owners of Tahoe Mountain Lab, David and Jamie Orr, have generously donated the space to BBBS for meeting purposes. David was previously a “Little” and considers this an opportunity to “give back” to his community.

Tourism professionals from Brazil and England heading to South Lake Tahoe

Two professional travel and tourism groups are headed to South Lake Tahoe September 28-30 as part of Visit California and Travel Nevada's highlight of what both states have to offer to the foreign tourist.

South Lake Tahoe motel being rebuilt after devastating fire

A South Lake Tahoe motel is being rebuilt after an early morning fire swept through it, displacing the 35 tourists who were staying there and forcing the business to close because of the damage. Its been 14 months since fire destroyed much of the Deerfield Lodge on Ski Run Blvd, the cause of which is still undetermined according to Chief Gareth Harris of Lake Valley Fire Department who was the investigator on the fire.

Full plate of South Lake Tahoe Labor Day weekend activities

A busy Labor Day weekend starts Friday, with a plethora of activities for locals and visitors alike. There are fireworks, music, car shows, runs, boat races, a farm-fork festival and much more to enjoy.

Policies on Champions Plaza and funding non-profits created

Residents go to the City for a number of requests, and in order to make sure procedures are followed on those requests, new policies were created Tuesday during the South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting.

A Champions Plaza Recognition Policy was created in order to know how to handle the expected requests for names to be placed at the new venue at the corner of Highway 50 and Lakeview Avenue. The sculpture was selected earlier this summer.

South Lake Tahoe man honored for saving drowning woman

July 25, 2015 will always be known as the day Jacob "Jake" Callanan saved a life.

The 24-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was working at Ski Run Marina as a boat deck hand when he responded to a woman screaming from the lake. He waded out, found a submerged woman and carried her to shore.

Local bartenders to mix up specialties for Barton fundraiser

Sample Tahoe’s newest cocktail creations at the sixth annual Signature Cocktail Contest. Hosted by the Barton Foundation, the community event will take place Wednesday, September 23 at the Riva Grill at 5:30 p.m.

Contest attendees can sample an assortment of cocktails created by Tahoe mixologists who are comprised of bartenders from local establishments, each showcase a unique concoction with Tahoe Blue Vodka and have been known to add less traditional ingredients like cotton candy or potato chips.

Electrofishing project helps both hungry and Lake Tahoe nearshore

Scientists have found a way to put some of the 51,000 pounds of harvested fish to good use at the same time they are ridding Lake Tahoe of invasive species.

In the first three years of a cooperative pilot program between the University of Nevada Reno and California Fish and Wildlife, unwanted fish have been donated to needy families.

South Lake Tahoe teen airlifted to Renown after bicycle accident

An 18-year-old male was airlifted to Renown Medical Center on Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a car on Ski Run Blvd.

The teen, who had recently moved to South Lake Tahoe, was riding his bike southbound near Spruce Drive just before 4 p.m. when he made a left hand turn into the path of a northbound car driven by a South Lake Tahoe woman.

The unidentified cyclist hit the front of the car on the driver's side. He was airlifted with undisclosed injuries.

The driver of the car was uninjured and is cooperating with police.

Wag, Waddle and Walk event tonight

Dogs on the Run, a South Lake Tahoe non-profit, is hosting their monthly Wag, Waddle and Walk event on Monday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m.

The monthly dog walking activity brings together dog owners for a little exercise, optional competition and socializing. The on-leash walk starts at Al Tahoe Post Office parking lot and finishes at Sierra Pizza on Al Tahoe Blvd.

This family friendly event is for non-aggressive canines and people. Dogs must be on-leash and up-to-date on their vaccinations.

City takes first steps to get out of the ambulance business

South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston made a presentation Tuesday, asking for an alteration to the Cal Tahoe JPA agreement for City provided ambulance services.

Meston wants the City to remain a part of the JPA, but hand over ambulance duties to Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD).

Injured pink Chihuahua thrives at home in South Lake Tahoe

You may remember the news back on January 13, 2014, when a Chihuahua puppy was found in the Bay Area with her fur dyed pink and a fractured leg. A good Samaritan had picked the puppy off the street and took her into the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) and SPCA in San Mateo, CA.

Their staff got the two-month old puppy into surgery for a hairline fracture to her right rear tibia and started her on pain medication. As she was resting at the facility the staff named her "Candy" because of her unique coloring.

New restaurant and concert venue proposed for Heavenly Village

The owners of Heavenly Village Cinemas want to turn an empty third floor space on the property into a restaurant and bar with an entertainment venue with stadium style seating for 110 people. But, in order to do so, they need to buy some extra commercial floor area (CFA) from the City of South Lake Tahoe.

3,500 cyclists will take part in America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride

Cyclists from around the country have descended upon South Lake Tahoe for the 24th annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride around Lake Tahoe on Sunday, June 7, 2015.

All 3,500 spots have been filled by riders participating in the 72-mile around the lake ride, the 100-mile Century ride and the 35-mile fun ride which includes a boat cruise.

New phase of construction to begin at The Chateau

Soon, memories of "The Hole" will be replaced with the vision of new retail, restaurants and condominiums as the next phase of construction begins in South Lake Tahoe.

The Chateau at the Village will continue its growth to the corner of Friday Avenue and Highway 50.

Weekly farmers markets in South Lake Tahoe

Rows of fresh fruit, vegetables, coffee, food, flowers and local goods including soap and books will be featured at the South Lake Tahoe Farmers' Markets on Tuesdays all summer.

The Tuesday market runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is operated by El Dorado County Farmers' Markets and is held at the American Legion located at 2732 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

City staff and locals help kick off the Tahoe Bike Challenge

Local cyclists got into the biking mode Monday in South Lake Tahoe at the start of the two week long bike challenge.

Pearl Izumi at the Y hosted the "Ready, Set, Pedal" party with swag bags, food and special discounts. Riders gathered at the store and started on either a 5 mile or a 10 mile loop.

Runners to pass through South Lake Tahoe overnight

A race from Reno, around Lake Tahoe, through the Carson Valley, up to Virginia City and back to Reno began Friday morning at 7 a.m. This is the 11th year the Reno-Tahoe Odyssey Relay Run Adventure is taking place and it is growing in popularity each year. There are 253 teams of an average of 12 runners each taking part in the overnight race which covers 178 miles.

Fun and free events highlight Tahoe Bike Challenge

During the two weeks the Tahoe Bike Challenge is going on in Lake Tahoe, there are community events almost every day, including yoga, group rides and movies. .

'Swim for Africa' Paint & Sip fundraiser

Learn how to paint a beautiful African landscape piece and help give our children in Kenya an education and future hope.

Swim For Africa was founded in 2010 by the three Carter sisters from South Lake Tahoe to help raise support for children in Athi River, Kenya. Each year, 'Swim For Africa' helps the Athi River children by providing their families with necessary funds for schooling, school supplies, and food. 'Swim For Africa' relies on the donations of others and the comfort that community can bring to fund 7-8 children in school and 3-4 families with food.

Canadian Leah Kirchmann wins Stage 2 of Amgen Tour in SLT

People lined the 25-mile Amgen race course from Heavenly to Meyers on Saturday, all waiting to catch a glimpse of the top women cyclists as they quickly passed by.

There were great spectating opportunities, and many locals and visitors took advantage of them, from Ski Run Blvd, along Pioneer Trail to South Upper Truckee.

The course was much different that Friday's trip around the lake, but still a tough one with plenty of climbs, downhills and turns.

After two trips around the course, Canadian Leah Kirchmann emerged the victor, just edging out American Lauren Komanski.

South Lake Tahoe road closures on Saturday

Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California Women's will affect travel in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday.

If you want to watch the race along the route it is advised you get in place by 9:30 a.m. as roads will start to close at that time.

Pioneer Trail will be closed to through traffic from Ski Run Boulevard and Pioneer Trail to US Highway 50 in Meyers and Pioneer Trail until 1 p.m. Please plan accordingly.

Forest Service project aims to eliminate invasive plants at Lake Tahoe

A project to remove invasive plants from the Lake Tahoe Basin will continue this summer. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will eradicate, control, and contain these plants using chemical treatment. Work will occur at approximately 70 infestation sites beginning May 15 and continuing through September, 2015.
