2015 Alpine Ski Team Full of Lake Tahoe Athletes
Submitted by paula on Thu, 05/08/2014 - 9:14pmPARK CITY, UT (May 7) – Olympic gold medalists Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) and Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) are among the 40 athletes nominated to the 2015 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The team will formally named in the fall during Nature Valley First Tracks at Copper Mountain, CO – home of the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center.

South Lake Tahoe Sisters Named to Junior World Ski Championships Team

Local girls, Michael and Whitney Gardner, have been named to the 2014 U.S. Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships team.
They will join 20 other Americans competing in Valmalenco, Italy starting on March 30.
Both girls have attended Whittell High School, Michael is currently a student and Whitney is a graduate. They ski for the Heavenly Valley Ski and Snowboard Foundation.

The Whittell High School girls took first place in Giant Slalom and Duals in the Tahoe Basin Ski League Finals held in Squaw Valley this week while the South Tahoe High girls ski team took first in Slalom, second in Giant Slalom and Duals. The South Tahoe Girls took first overall.
Maia Bickert from South Tahoe High took 1st in all three races, Slalom, Giant Slalom and Duals. Whittell's Michael Gardner placed 2nd in Duals, 6th in Giant Slalom and 5th in Slalom while teammate Madison Idso placed 2nd in Giant Slalom, 8th in Slalom,

Ty Sprock of South Lake Tahoe to Compete in Junior World Ski Championships

South Lake Tahoe may just have a future Olympian in its midst. 18 year old Whittell High School graduate Ty Sprock is one of 16 elite U.S. athletes that will be competing in the 2014 FIS Alpine Junior World Championships in Slovakia February 26 through March 6.
Julia Mancuso of Lake Tahoe Finishes 8th in Sochi Downhill

Super combined bronze medalist Julia Mancuso of Lake Tahoe led the U.S. Ski Team with eighth in Thursday's Olympic downhill as Dominique Gisin of Switzerland and Tina Maze of Slovenia made history with a tie for gold. An Olympic medal tie has happened four times since 1948 in alpine skiing, but before today, had never happened for a gold medal.

The team is highlighted by Olympic gold medalists Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Ted Ligety (Park City, UT), Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, CA) and World Champion Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, CO).

U.S. Olympic Freestyle Team Nominations Announced

The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association announced the nomination of nine moguls and aerials athletes to the U.S. Olympic Freestyle Ski Team. The team will be led by reigning Olympic Champion Hannah Kearney and Olympians Patrick Deneen, Heather McPhie, Emily Cook and Ashley Caldwell. The athletes were nominated based on results on the International Ski Federation World Cup.

It's Not Just South Lake Tahoe Athletes Who Are Headed to the Olympics, Local Doctors are too!

There are more local additions to the U.S. Olympic team than the three South Lake Tahoe athletes who were named to the U.S. Olympic team. Two local doctors are also headed to Sochi for the winter games.
Terrence Orr, MD, and Jonathan Finnoff, DO, both physicians with Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine, will volunteer as team physicians at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

From March 29-31, 2013, Heavenly Mountain Resort will be buzzing with excitement as Olympic hopefuls take to the California side of the resort to compete in moguls, aerials and dual moguls. The Sprint U.S. Freestyle Championships will return to Heavenly’s famous Gunbarrel run, as U.S. team athletes come together for the final event of the season to battle it out for the title of U.S. Champion. Two of Lake Tahoe's most popular ski and snowboarding icons, Daron Rahlves and Jeremy Jones, have finished shooting public service ads this week for the nonprofit Tahoe Fund's Plate for Powder program. Rahlves and Jones donated their time for the California and Nevada Lake Tahoe specialty license plates program, which gives new Tahoe license plate buyers two free Alpine or Nordic ski tickets to their choice of 12 major Lake Tahoe-area ski resorts.

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation has announced two new programs for the 2011 – 2012 winter season under the Freestyle umbrella. The Foundation will offer two Freeride program options, the One-Day Program and the Full-Time Competitive Program. These programs are open to intermediate to advanced level skiers aged ten to 18 who have a passion for slopestyle, skiercross and halfpipe training.
