Driver arrested after hitting 18-year-old cyclist, then running him over

UPDATE 8/29/17 8:00AM - A 63-year-old man has been arrested on charges of Assault with a Deadly Weapon after he allegedly ran over the 18-year-old cyclist he thought stole his son's bicycle.

Esteban Hernandez Cuenca was arrested and is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on $25,000 bail.

The unidentified victim was air lifted to Renown Medical Center with serious injuries. His current condition is unknown.

Both men are from South Lake Tahoe.

Crash at Tahoe Keys Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe causing traffic jam

A two-car accident at Tahoe Keys BLvd. and Highway 50 has traffic jammed up through South Lake Tahoe and send two people to the hospital Friday.

One car was T-boned, their airbag was deployed and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had to extricate the driver.

Two people were transported to Barton Hospital with mild to moderate injuries.

Both cars were being hooked up to tow trucks at 12:00 p.m. and traffic should start flowing soon.

The cause is unknown at this time and this is a developing story. More details will be released shortly.

SnowGlobe wants 10 year extension, say they contribute $14M to local economy annually

SnowGlobe, the annual outdoor music festival in South Lake Tahoe, has come to town over the New Year's Eve holiday since 2011, and now they want to add ten years to their contract that expires this year.

During Tuesday, August 15th's South Lake Tahoe City Council meeting, promoters will make a presentation to the City outlining their plans, showing how they think they can become the largest funding source of South Lake Tahoe projects and non-profits.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Meston to head California Fire Chiefs Association

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston has been elected as president-elect of the California Fire Chief's Association (CalChiefs). The 925 voting members of the association voted for Meston during their recent election period that concluded August 4.

This is not only the first time a chief from South Lake Tahoe has been elected to the state's top spot, but also the first time anyone has from cities along the Sierra Nevada.

"I am rally humbled and very much thrilled," Chief Meston said of his appointment.

Lightning strikes tree as weather brings hail and heavy rain

A strong thunderstorm made its way through the South Shore Sunday at 2:10 p.m., leaving behind heavy rain, small hail, some minor flooding and a downed tree. The National Weather Service in Reno said wind gusts were up to 40 mph in some areas at the time.

On Oglala Street in Meyers, lightning struck the top of a tree and caused it to "explode" according to neighbors. Lake Valley Fire Department arrived almost immediately and there was no major damage, and no injuries.

SLTFR getting valuable practice in at old Knight's Inn before demolition

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the end of the old Knight's Inn draws near, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue personnel are getting valuable skill practice in at the two-story building.

Developers will soon be demolishing the old motel in preparation for the Bijou Marketplace so SLTFR has been getting hands on training including ventilation, forcible entry, breaching walls and moving hose lines.

"We hope to train to the very end of standing buildings, squeezing every ounce of training out of the buildings," said SLTFR Chief Jeff Meston.

Fire alarm prompts evacuation of South Lake Tahoe timeshare

Guests staying at Diamond Resort's Lake Tahoe Vacation Resort in South Lake Tahoe were evacuated Tuesday afternoon after a smoke alarm sounded in the Ski Run Boulevard property.

At 4:40 p.m., South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) responded. Upon arrival they found the guests already outside and they headed in.

Some workmen had been on the 5th floor of the timeshare hotel, soldering on pipes inside the wall. Surrounding insulation ignited and the alarm was sounded as the workmen pulled the smoking culprit out of the wall.

SLTFR responds to call of fire at Al Tahoe home

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to the call of a structure fire on the corner of Nevada Avenue and Tallac Avenue Monday night.

Upon arrival they found that the owner of the home had been working on the water heater. The expansion foam used on the project has volatile fumes that ignited according to SLTFR Battalion Chief Tim Spencer.

Power and gas was shut off to the single story structure as firefighters went through the home and examined the duct work to make sure no fire went into the crawl space.

Motorcyclist injured after running into car in South Lake Tahoe

A motorcyclist crashed into the back of a car in South Lake Tahoe Monday, sending its lone occupant to Barton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

At approximately 6:30 p.m., a line of traffic was stopped on Highway 50 by Grocery Outlet and Motel 6. The motorcyclist didn't notice the car in front of him was stopped and crashed into it.

The driver of the car was uninjured according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Battalion Chief Tim Spencer. He did say the classic motorcycle suffered major damage.

The hometown of the motorcyclist is unknown at this time.

South Lake Tahoe holds 2nd annual Public Safety Appreciation Day

El Dorado County sends more money to Cal Tahoe JPA for ambulance services

More money is on the way to the South Shore to fund ambulance services thanks to a unanimous vote by the El Dorado County Supervisors during their June 27 meeting. An amendment was made to the original contract between the Cal Tahoe Emergency Services Operations Authority (Cal Tahoe) and the County, giving an extra $790,000 per year as well as funds to buy a new ambulance.

The extra money will help fund a special team for interfacility transfers.

Discarded briquettes cause of fire in South Lake Tahoe

Discarded briquettes have been determined as the cause of a fire Saturday behind a home on Kubel Avenue in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue(SLTFR) responded to the fire and were able to quickly extinguish it but not before it burned an outbuilding and some of the yard and trees.

The briquettes had been left next to the shed.

Local firefighters stop by celebrity golf to support Charles Barkley

Popular South Lake Tahoe waterfront restaurant closed after water shut off

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An ongoing legal battle between the Tahoe Keys Marina and the Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association (TKPOA) has resulted in the water being shut off to all buildings at the marina.

Since the Fresh Ketch restaurant and adjacent deli are in one of those buildings, the El Dorado County Health Department shut them down due to a lack of water. A notice was also put up on the apartments in the complex advising residents of unsafe living conditions since there was no running water.

Citrus Heights man identified as drowning victim in Lake Tahoe

The man who drowned in Lake Tahoe on the Fourth of July has been identified as 41-year-old William Weaver of Citrus Heights.

Weaver fell from a double kayak he and his wife were on at about 3:30 p.m. according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Jim Drennan.

Rescue personnel responded to an area off of Beach Drive where Weaver had been taken by people in the area.

Small fire and jet ski accident keeping fire and police busy in South Lake Tahoe

The long 4th of July holiday weekend in South Lake Tahoe got off to a busy start Saturday with a water rescue and fire.

A boater saw smoke coming from the hillside near Heavenly, called it in from their location off the Ski Run Marina at 1:29 p.m. and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police combed the streets in the area to try and locate the source. The fire was spotted on U.S. Forest Service land off Keller Road in between Ruby Way and Wildwood Ave.

South Lake Tahoe area law enforcement, agencies and safety personnel are preparing for a very busy holiday weekend, full of people coming to enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities. Car severs gas meter on South Lake Tahoe home

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue is at a home on Chonokis Street this evening after the driver of a car hit the home's gas meter, shearing it completely off its base according to Battalion Chief Tim Spencer.

As of 7:00 p.m., SLTFR was at the scene, waiting for Southwest Gas to arrive to shut the gas off. In the meantime, the fire department was able to plugged the line temporarily.

Nobody was home in the neighboring properties so just one person was evacuated. They will remain out of their home unless Southwest arrives.

Firefighter safety training at Knight's Inn in South Lake Tahoe

Firefighters from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Lake Valley Fire Departments along with CalFire participated in firefighter survival training Wednesday at the site of the soon-to-be-demolished Knight's Inn.

In the past, fire crews were able to practice their skills when removing old buildings as they burned them instead of bulldozed, but environmental codes today prevent that.

Instead, fake smoke was used in Wednesday's training.

Wildfire Safety Expo in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

One hospitalized, two dogs killed in South Lake Tahoe fire

A South Lake Tahoe house fire this morning sent one woman to the hospital and killed her two dogs.

At 6:56 a.m. on June 9, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue responded to a fire in a duplex at 973 Paloma Street.

SLTFR Chief Jeff Meston said the occupant, a female, was transported to Barton Memorial Hospital after she suffered smoke inhalation. He said two dogs perished in the fire and animal control was on their way to the home to assist in retrieval.

Crash knocks out power to 2067 customers in South Lake Tahoe

A driver at the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd and Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe ran into the guy-wire for a power pole, cutting power to over 2,000 Liberty Utilities customers Tuesday afternoon.

The driver was not injured.

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police Departments responded to the one vehicle crash after getting the call at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday June 6.

Power was knocked out in South Lake Tahoe at 12:46 p.m. but was restored by 2:45 p.m. A new power pole was placed on Pioneer Trail by Liberty Utilities crews.

Residents evacuated after gas leak found at South Lake Tahoe apartment complex

5/29/17 10:45 p.m. update: All of the evacuated residents are now back home after Southwest Gas crews were able to stop the leak and repair the broken main line. At this time those crews are going into each apartment and relighting pilot lights.

According to SLTFR Battalion Chief Jim Drennan the cause of the broken line is unknown. The main is located alongside the apartment's parking lot but the break occurred underground.

Burnt ballast in overhead lights prompts evacuation at LTCC

Lake Tahoe Community College issued an evacuation order after smoke alarms went off at the campus at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. The school issued an "emergency" via Twitter, asking everyone to leave:

Memorial in South Lake Tahoe dedicated to local heroes

The new public safety memorial wall was dedicated during a public ceremony on Friday. Fire trucks and patrol cars lined the street as law enforcement, US Forest Service and fire personnel gathered at the Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe.

Speakers included Undersheriff Randy Peshon, South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Chief Jeff Meston.

Community turns out for celebration of SLT Police Department's 50th anniversary

The first South Lake Tahoe Police Department community gathering was a successful one on Saturday as the 50th anniversary of the department was celebrated with hundreds of people at Lakeview Commons. There were rides on both the police and fire boats, a concert, BBQ, interactions with the police K-9s, booths, fingerprinting and an awards ceremony.

Four car collision on SR89 sends three to hospital

Three people were injured after a head-on collision on State Route 89 near Cascade Estates on Saturday, May 13.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Subaru WRX was being driven northbound on SR-89 near Cascade when the car overheated. The driver pulled to the right shoulder and called his father for assistance. The dad arrived in his Volkswagon Touareg and he parked on the right shoulder behind his son’s WRX, out of the traffic lanes with its hazard lights on.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50th anniversary with community party

Plumber's torch sets off fire at Alder Inn in South Lake Tahoe

Damage was kept to a minimum after a quick response by firefighters from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue on Monday afternoon at the Alder Inn on Ski Run Boulevard.

The fire started on the first floor where a plumber was working with a torch. It went into the second floor through plumbing chases.

"A quick and aggressive fire attack minimized damage to the structure," SLTFR said on their Facebook page.

The call came in at 1:30 p.m. May 1.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue looks to City Council for new boat

Without a boat since 2015, South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) will ask City Council for $75,000 on Tuesday for the purchase of a used SAFE boat.

The former fire rescue boat, Marine 17, was taken off the lake (decommissioned) in 2015 after 15 years of service. Needed repairs amounted to more than the value of the boat. Since the SLTFR has borrowed Marine 2 which belongs to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD).

A quick response by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Wednesday afternoon saved a home from major damage after a garbage can in the home's garage caught fire.

Owners of the home, which is located on Tahoe Vista Drive near Tahoe Island Drive, were at their residence when the fire started.

According to SLTFR Battalion Chief Tim Spencer, the cause is under investigation but it is suspected fireplace ashes disposed in a garbage can are the culprit. He said the fire was contained to the trashcan and a small part of the garage.
