CARSON CITY — Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Nev., said today he opposes the earmark process used to fund various projects around the country, advocating instead that state priorities for federal support go through a regular budget review.
“The problem with earmarks, when you look at them, it’s symbolic largely, because it’s not that it’s a huge part of the federal budget,” he said. “But a lot of them appear at the end with absolutely no hearings and they are in bills.

CARSON CITY — A legal firm retained by the state Department of Transportation to defend against a contractor dispute over construction of a section of the Carson City bypass has racked up $6 million in fees so far and the costs could still go higher.

Gov. Brian Sandoval today expressed concern about the amount of legal fees in the case involving a $40 million claim by Utah-based Ames Construction, which built the first phase of the U.S. 395 bypass in the capital that opened in February of 2006.

CARSON CITY – Nevada’s major casinos saw total revenues increase to $22 billion last fiscal year, but the 256 properties reported a net loss of just under $4 billion, the Gaming Control Board reported today.
It was the third year of losses in a row. The only other loss since records have been kept came in 2002.
The report, called the Nevada Gaming Abstract, analyzes those casino properties grossing $1 million or more in gaming revenue for the year ending June 30, 2011.

In a significant budget win for Gov. Jerry Brown and lawmakers, the California Supreme Court ruled today the state can eliminate local agencies that subsidize construction in blighted areas. The decision strengthens the state's ability to take funds from redevelopment agencies, such as the one at South Lake Tahoe, for the current budget. It also provides leverage for state leaders to use more than $1 billion annually in redevelopment property tax dollars to balance future budgets.

With the last troops leaving Iraq, legions of veterans who served in combat are having a hard time finding work as they return home, a situation officials say will grow worse. The unemployment rate for veterans aged 20 to 24 has averaged 30 percent this year, more than double that of others the same age, though the rate for older veterans closely matches that of civilians, the New York Times reports.

CARSON CITY — Gov. Brian Sandoval honored three Pearl Harbor survivors today on the 70th anniversary of the attack that brought the United States into World War II.

A Nevada man could begin pulling crayfish out of Lake Tahoe's waters by next spring following action by state wildlife officials. The Nevada Wildlife Commission on Dec. 3 unanimously approved regulations authorizing the commercial harvest of crayfish from Tahoe's Nevada waters. More hurdles need to be cleared by other agencies.

While choosing to allow family members and friends to teach you to ski or snowboard may have an economic advantage, most experts would advise against this practice. There are many subtleties involved in both skiing and snowboarding, and in many cases, only trained professional ski instructors are able to communicate them effectively. Unfortunately, lessons can be expensive. On the other hand, injuries that come from poor technique are even more expensive.

Viking Road is soon to become the way to 42nd Street with the first student performance to take the stage at the new Viking Theatre at South Tahoe High School’s Tahoe Arts and Design Academy.

CARSON CITY – Nevada has made significant progress in the collection of the data needed to measure and help improve student achievement, but still has work to do in putting the information to work for parents, educators and policy makers, a national report released today says.

Nevada Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki says Nevada has agreed with officials in California to make a run at hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics at Lake Tahoe. Krolicki made the announcement today to Nevada tourism leaders in Las Vegas. Go here for the story.

UPDATED 8:30AM: California State Parks is investigating vandalism that happened over the weekend on Washoe Meadows State Park land near the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Electronic equipment and river monitoring devices were damaged or destroyed. Two logs were found to have graffiti sprayed on them, saying "Stop Golf" and "Save the Park."

Nevada backers of a plan to ring Lake Tahoe with a scenic bikeway are $6 million closer to completing the $82 million trail. Supporters hope the 116-mile Nevada Stateline-to-Stateline Bikeway Project will connect communities, improve recreational opportunities and promote the iconic attraction bordering California and Nevada.
