Good Samaritans and driver killed on Mt. Rose Highway

Three Reno residents are dead and one is in the hospital with serious injuries after a Saturday night crash on State Route 431, the Mt. Rose Highway.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. on November 10, the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to reports of a head-on crash on the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431) at Thomas Creek Road.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the season changes it is also the changing of the guard at Cardinale Way in South Lake Tahoe after it was sold to a Texas company, Jim Bagan Toyota.

Joe Cardinale and Jim Bagan ran into each other at a Mazda convention (both have dealerships with that brand as well as Toyota) a few years ago. Whenever they met up after that Bagan would ask Cardinale when he wanted to sell his South Lake Tahoe location according to General Manager Gary Hamner. Each time Cardinale would say "no" until a few months ago.

Jackknifed big rig and collision closes Highway 50 over Echo Summit temporarily

Both lanes of Highway 50 over Echo Summit were closed at times Thursday afternoon after a westbound big rig truck jackknifed near the Sierra at Tahoe turnoff.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the truck slide on the highway at 2:14 p.m., prior to chain controls going up. It jackknifed and ended up in a ditch. A person driving a Toyota 4-runner, also westbound, was slowing to avoid the truck and was rear-ended by a Hyundai that could not be stopped in time.

Man convicted of attempted murder after shooting in Meyers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - On March 7, 2018 after a two week trial, a South Lake Tahoe jury convicted Ignacio Madrigal Arizaga of Galt, California of Attempted Murder; Shooting at an Occupied Vehicle; Illegal Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and, Illegal Possession of Ammo by a Convicted Felon.

He faces 41 years to life in state prison when he is sentenced on April 2, 2018.

Maddie Bowman heading to her second straight Olympics

South Lake Tahoe's Maddie Bowman is headed to her second straight Olympics!

She, along with Reno's David Wise, won gold in the first halfpipe for skiers held in the Olympic, and now they're both the first U.S. halfpipe skiers to qualify for February's Olympics in PyeongChang.

Even though Maddie finished in fourth place Friday, she clinched and punched her ticket to South Korea during the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix in Snowmass because she had two podium finishes during the previous three qualifying events.

A former South Lake Tahoe resident visiting family for the holidays on the South Shore was on his way home to La Mesa, California when he and girlfriend were involved in a three-car head-on collision south of Kramer's Crossing on Highway 395 near Victorville on December 28, 2017.

Chris "Coco" Cocores, 26, was in a Toyota Corolla driven by his girlfriend, 21-year-old Cecilia Casares, when the car crossed over a solid yellow line to pass a slower vehicle, according to the California Highway Patrol. They collided with two vehicles heading northbound.

George McCall 1929 ~ 2017

Anyone that knew George knows that he was not only extremely generous, fun loving and tenacious but he was also notorious for playing pranks on nearly everyone he met. Whether he “had to catch a plane” in order to speed up dinner or exaggerated his age by 10 years, he was always one for a smile and a laugh. All of us would describe him as the best husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa we could ask for. Everytime you asked how he was doing, he simply responded with “fantastic.” Which was a perfect reflection of his positive and uplifting personality.

Wendy Shehadi 1941-2017

Former South Lake Tahoe resident Wendy Shehadi passed away on October 19 2017 at the age of 76 in Las Vegas. Wendy is survived by her husband Dick; sons Mark and Scott; guardian son Mike Cokeron; grandsons Michael and Ryan Shehadi; brother Dr. Richard Rupp; sister in law Louise Rupp; brother in law Michael Shehadi; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Gardnerville man dies in crash near Red Lake Road

A 38-year-old Gardnerville man died Monday after colliding with a big rig near Red Lake Road.

At 9:25 a.m., a Toyota Highlander was heading eastbound on State Route 88 near the curve at Red Lake Road when, for known reasons, crossed into the opposing lane into the path of a Freightliner truck with a 40-foot trailer.

The 55-year-old driver of the truck from Mokelumne Hill, Calif. was not injured.

No names have been released and the cause of the collision is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

No injuries in two car collision in South Lake Tahoe

A two-car collision on Highway 50 just before noon Sunday created a traffic jam, but there were no injuries.

At 11:48 a.m. October 1, emergency personnel from South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, Police Department and JPA ambulance responded to the area in between Motel 6 and Grocery Outlet.

The driver of a white Toyota Camry pulled out of Motel 6 into the path of a woman driving westbound in a tan Toytoa Avalon. The Camry driver was attempting to cross all westbound lanes to head east and did not see the Avalon.

One dead, others injured in motorcycle crashes on area highways

There was a fatal motorcycle crash on U.S. 50 about a mile east of Spooner Summit just before noon Saturday, September 30.

The east bound lane was closed for about three hours as emergency personnel responded to the scene and conducted an investigation. Their cars surrounded the victim, keeping passerby from seeing the scene.

The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) said it was a single vehicle crash and speed is believed to be a factor.

The accident happened about 11:54 a.m. No other details were available.

South Lake Tahoe man killed in Douglas County collision

A South Lake Tahoe man has been identified as the person killed Sunday night in a vehicle versus pedestrian collision in Gardnerville, Nev.

At approximately 8:05 p.m. on September 17, Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to the serious crash on US-395 near Industrial Way.

For unknown reasons, 54-year-old Rosendo Ramirez Amaya was lying down across the northeast right lane of the highway when the driver of a Toyota Sienna was unable to avoid traveling over him. He succumbed to his injuries.

South Lake Tahoe sisters found safe in Oregon

Update 9:30 a.m. - Melissa Lea, 18, and her 7-year-old sister Kalila have been found safe in Oregon.

A grocery store clerk near the eclipse festival recognized them from the missing persons' report.

No other information is available at this time.

Two sisters who traveled from South Lake Tahoe to attend the Symbiosis eclipse festival in Oregon have not been heard from since Sunday, according to the Crook County Sheriff's Office.

Fatal crash in Washoe Valley

A Las Vegas man died early Tuesday in a single vehicle rollover crash on Old US395 in the Washoe Valley just north of Bellevue Road.

At about 5:30 a.m. on August 22, 42-year-old Frederick Inman was headed north in his white Toyota pickup. The truck went off the roadway to the right and overturned.

Inman was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, impairment is suspected in this crash.

60th free concert this week at Live at Lakeview

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For six years Live at Lakeview has been the place to be on Thursday nights in South Lake Tahoe, and this week marks their 60th free concert.

On August 17, the signature concert series will have Sol Peligro and Boca do Rio on the beach at Lakeview Commons starting at 4:30 p.m.

The popular series is presented by Toyota USA, the City of South Lake Tahoe and On Course Events and goes until the end of August.

Three-car crash near Sierra sends two to hospital

The California Highway Patrol released their report today of the July 29 three-car collision on US50 east of Sierra at Tahoe Road that sent one to Renown on Care Flight and another to Barton, both with multiple injuries.

Driver airlifted to hospital after South Lake Tahoe crash

A man was transported by helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno Saturday afternoon after crashing his white Toyota Tacoma into a parked car in South Lake Tahoe.

The unidentified man suffered a medical issue and lost control of his vehicle at about 1:20 p.m. on June 24, hitting the car on Spruce Avenue and moving it about 200 feet according to South Lake Tahoe Police.

The condition of the driver is unknown.

Live at Lakeview returns for sixth season in South Lake Tahoe

Summer is almost here and its time to start planning your Thursday evenings in South Lake Tahoe with a stop at Live at Lakeview, the summer concert series on the beach.

Starting June 22 and every Thursday until August 31, the free concerts will be at Lakeview Commons at the corner of Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Four car collision on SR89 sends three to hospital

Three people were injured after a head-on collision on State Route 89 near Cascade Estates on Saturday, May 13.

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a Subaru WRX was being driven northbound on SR-89 near Cascade when the car overheated. The driver pulled to the right shoulder and called his father for assistance. The dad arrived in his Volkswagon Touareg and he parked on the right shoulder behind his son’s WRX, out of the traffic lanes with its hazard lights on.

Former Truckee High football coach dies in head-on collision

Former Truckee High School head football coach Robert Shaffer was killed in a head-on collision outside of Sierraville at Saturday night according to the California Highway Patrol in Truckee.

Shaffer, his wife Lisa and 22-year-old son Patrick were in their Toyota Corolla on SR-89 in Sierra County just before 9:30 p.m. when a Ford F250 driven by 54-year-old David Slaughter of Sacramento drifted into Shaffer's lane.

SR89 open and clear after boulder and tree fall on roadway

8:30 a.m. Update: The road is now clear and free of controls and debris.

A boulder "the size of a Volkswagon" fell onto SR89 near Emerald Bay at 9:22 p.m. Sunday night and 20 minutes later a Toyota Prius crashed into it. No injuries are reported but the vehicle sustained major damage. As of 10:40 p.m., a tow truck is on the way and the roadway will be closed in both directions to remove the vehicle.

According to Caltrans' Twitter page, a tree also fell onto the road but has since been removed.

The road is open but expect delays and use caution until the boulder is removed.

World Cup skiing and Celebrity Pro-Am events at Squaw Valley this weekend

Serious crash near Kirkwood injures multiple people

5:00 p.m. update: Seven people were injured and transported to area hospitals Tuesday after a four-car crash in the "Ice Box" area on Highway 88.

Just after 1:00 p.m., a Toyota Highlander with three adults and three children inside was traveling westbound and, for reasons unknown at this time, went into a snowbank. A car following the Toyota then slammed into it.

A third car, a small, brand new Chevrolet, avoided the other two cars as they came upon the crash, but then ended up in a snowbank as well. The fourth car involved then ran into the Chevrolet.

Jamie Anderson wins Slopestyle at Mammoth Grand Prix

The American snowboarders turned in a stellar performance at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix slopestyle event on Sunday, sweeping both men’s and women’s podiums. Up-and-comer Red Gerard from Silverthorne, Colo., topped the field to take the win for the men, while South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson continued her global domination with a win for the ladies. Kyle Mack (West Bloomfield, MI) and Hailey Langland (San Clemente, CA) each took second while Dylan Thomas (Kingsley, PA) and Julia Marino (Westport, CT) were third.

It’s been great seeing all of my friends and acquaintances who have lived here for less than 10 years posting photos and sharing how Snowmageddon 2017 has blown them away. I did the same when I first moved to Tahoe back in the 70’s and storms like this were not uncommon. Back then playing was more important than clearing the snow. I had a big Dodge Ram 4x4 pickup and I j drove over the snow in my driveway and packed it down. I did not own a snowblower and can’t remember shoveling much. One year the packed snow was so high I could not get the truck under the carport.

CHP officer finds herself inches away from accident after work

As California Highway Patrol Officer Ruth Loehr headed home after working in Meyers Tuesday night, little did she know she was about to have a close call in the type of accident she normally responds to.

On January 24 at 5:30 p.m., Loehr was driving southbound on SR-89 just cresting the hill near Grass Lake on Luther Pass and was behind a truck tractor & trailer combination ("Big Rig"). Both Loehr and the truck driver passed a Toyota FJ Cruiser that was heading north when, for unknown reasons, it hit the snow berm. The Toyota rolled onto its side, just missing Loehr's vehicle by inches.

Pedestrian dies after being hit by car as crossing Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe

A 32-year-old man was killed Saturday, December 10, 2016 after being struck by a car as he ran across Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe near the Town and Country Center.

At approximately 11:23 p.m., officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to the vehicle versus pedestrian call.

Jamie Anderson on top of leader board on Dew Tour

The all new jib garden took it’s first official beating of the weekend when the women of Snowboard Slopestyle took on the rail section first thing on Saturday morning.

The top rider of the morning was none other than Jamie Anderson. Anderson had mentioned earlier in the week that she was a bit of a traditionalist with regard to Slopestyle formats. However, after absolutely slaughtering the rails section, she was excited to perform so well under the new circumstances.

Mya Rossi has been named Youth of the Year by the Boys and Girls club of Lake Tahoe because of her outstanding contributions to both the club and her community.

Along with this role she will also be receiving a Heavenly/Kirkwood/Northstar season pass next winter courtesy of the Vail Epic Promise Program.

Single car rollover near Walker Lake claims life of German visitor

A German woman visiting the United States with her family died in a single vehicle rollover crash near Walker Lake on US95 May 7.

Liane Kramer, 24, was one of six people traveling north in a 2010 Toyota Sienna when the driver, 20-year-old Nina Kiseleva, went off the roadway after passing a semi-truck and trailer according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The car overturned in the dirt shoulder and came to rest on its wheels facing southwest at approximately 8:15 a.m. Saturday.

Fatal car crash near Glenbrook

Two cars collided on Highway 50 near Glenbrook at 9:40 p.m. Friday, January 16, leaving a Los Angeles man dead.

The Nevada Highway Patrol Troopers investigating the crash say a Silver 2009 Toyota Corolla, driven by Carlos Ortega Gomez of Mexico, was traveling eastbound. A white 2014 Subaru Impreza driven by 59-year-old Carson City resident Virgilio Ballesteros was traveling westbound in the slow lane.

Woman hit by car near Kingsbury Grade

A woman walking her dog on Ponderosa Drive was injured after being hit by a car on Thursday, December 17.

Tahoe-Douglas Fire and Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the 4:30 p.m. accident where they found Madeline Cass under a Toyota pickup truck that was driven by Charles Schofield.

Two more cars stolen in South Lake Tahoe

As reported last week, there were four stolen cars in South Lake Tahoe between September 10 and 15.

A 21-year-old transient Tarra Sheffield was arrested for stealing one of those cars. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department said she had evidence to other stolen cars when arrested.

Fall Festival and Chili Cook-off coming up; booth space available

The annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook-off is just a week away. The event which features local businesses on display as well as a chili competition is at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center on September 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is also a cake walk for the kids.

The Lake Tahoe Humane Society, the El Dorado County Jail Inmate Culinary Arts crew and Cardinale Way Toyota are just three of the participants in the chili cook-off. Attendees can sample each chili (for a small entry fee) and vote for their favorite along with the judges.

Man arrested in Incline Village after he shoots at car in Meyers

A 34-year-old man from Galt, CA was arrested in Incline Village, NV on Thursday night after turning himself in for shooting at a car in Meyers.

At approximately 9:18 p.m. on July 30, a Toyota Prius was traveling eastbound near the intersection of Highway 89 and Highway 50. The driver of the Prius said he was shot at by a passing vehicle. He couldn't identify the make of the car but thought it was a gold or tan sedan. Neither occupant in the Prius were injured though a bullet was found lodged in the driver's seat after it passed through the car door.

Car thefts in South Lake Tahoe rose in 2013, leveled off in 2014

In the State of California, vehicle thefts dropped 7% in 2014, marking the second straight year of decline.

For South Lake Tahoe, it was the first year of decline in three years.

In 2013, vehicle thefts in the city limits jumped 46% from 37 stolen cars to 54. Following in 2014, there was a drop of 7% when 50 cars were stolen according to figures obtained by South Tahoe Now from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department.

To date, 2015 is looking to be a repeat of last year with 25 car thefts through June.

South Lake Tahoe's 4th of July parade back on

Organizers of the annual South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade scrambled to remove the roadblocks which caused them to announce earlier this week the event was canceled.

"I had a meeting this morning, and partially due to the public pleas to make it work, we were able to resolve the problems and I am happy to say the parade is on," said JoAnn Conner, owner of Golden Bear Events who is the sponsor of event.
