City Council amends emergency ordinance that fined second homeowners

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The City Council voted Tuesday to amend their Emergency Order No. 1 from April that authorized administrative citations and fines of $1,000 for violations of the Governor's Stay at Home Order.

The City will not be fining second homeowners who visit their home in South Lake Tahoe but they will continue to fine those found renting out vacation homes until the Governor's ban on non-essential travel is amended.

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County can move ahead in reopening phase

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - California Governor Gavin Newsom has given El Dorado County the go-ahead to move fully into Stage 2 of the reopening phases. They joined Butte County to became the first two counties in the state to be allowed to move forward.

While businesses can start to reopen, there is still a statewide ban on nonessential travel. Second-home owners are still asked to respect that order and come to South Lake Tahoe to check their homes, or quarantine upon arrival. Vacation rentals are still not allowed in this stage.

Nominate a COVID-19 hero to win stay at Lake Tahoe vacation rental

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The owners of a vacation home on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe have created a contest to honor the front line employees who have worked so unselfishly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Claire and Charlie McArthur, owners of The Woodsy Tahoe Cabin, are offering a free six-night stay in October at their home that sleeps ten, has lake views from all levels, and is a 30-second walk to a private homeowners beach.

South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County prepare to enter reopening stage

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Plans for the partial reopening of South Lake Tahoe and El Dorado County are in the works, with the Board of Supervisors voting on a plan during a special meeting Friday, May 8, starting at 8:30 a.m.

During a Special City Council meeting Wednesday, the council put their support behind what the county decides so all can be on the same page and not confuse residents and visitors with separate rules.

Letter: South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce offers leaders suggestions on reopening

El Dorado County lifts orders but California stay-at-home orders still in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - One layer of stay-at-home orders has been lifted for El Dorado County as its Public Health Officer, Dr. Nancy Williams, has lifted her stay-at-home directive effective April 30, the original date it was to be lifted when set on March 19.

This doesn't mean that South Lake Tahoe and the county are open for business though as the State's order is still in effect.

"We are requesting from the Governor that we [South Lake Tahoe] can move towards reopening in a phased approach with attention paid to his six guidelines," said South Lake Tahoe Mayor Jason Collin.

Community spirit surrounds South Lake Tahoe food giveaway

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the second time in as many weeks, Overland Meat & Seafood Co. of South Lake Tahoe gave away 1,000 pounds of hamburger to the first 500 people to come by the store.

This time, Overland owners Brian and Kim Cohen had other businesses join in the fun.

Grass Roots gave away $10 gift cards, Heart Rock Herb & Spice Co. gave away spice samples, and Safeway at Bijou added two pallets of fresh fruits and vegetables to the mix.

"This is community effort at its finest," said Brian.

Reopening plans underway for South Lake Tahoe once given the state and county go ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In less than 90 days life has changed in South Lake Tahoe, California and the United States. The West caught up quickly to the novel coronavirus pandemic that was first contracted by a human in China on November 17, 2019.

Scientists and doctors pled for the public to stay home to keep the virus from spreading, and that plea worked better in some areas than others.

El Dorado County supervisors add $1,000 fine for vacation home rental use in Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to issue citations to anyone violating the ban on nonessential travel in the Lake Tahoe Basin as it pertains to the use of vacation home rentals (VHRs).

Anyone found using a VHR is subject to a $1,000 fine per day of violation.

Events Center approved by Douglas County Commissioners

STATELINE, Nev. - In what has been a hotly debated topic for months between the five Douglas County Board of Commissioners and members of the public, the Tahoe South Events Center passed the final hurdle Thursday. In a 3-2 vote, the commissioners approved bond issuance, the final step in the approval process. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) had previously unanimously approved it.

County health officer sets the record straight about non-essential businesses and travel

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - Since California Governor Newsom issued "Shelter in Place" orders for the state on March 19, life changed for millions of people. What was once commonplace, changed overnight.

Navigating through what is essential and what is nonessential has been a struggle for many.

The El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Nancy Williams created a statement Friday to reiterate business, activity and travel restrictions. She also said that she and county leaders may have to impose stricter limitations than imposed by the state should some current practices continue.

Tahoe Douglas Rotary donates $20,000 to local nonprofits amidst COVID-19 emergency

STATELINE, Nev. - Due to the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Douglas announced its immediate initial commitment and disbursement of $20,000 in cash grants to four South Lake Tahoe Community proactive support agencies - Tahoe Magic, Christmas Cheer, Giving Angels and Bread & Broth.

The club has been serving the South Shore community since 1965 and just completed an online auction in lieu of their normal annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration.

Some second homeowners to provide housing for those affected by coronavirus

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In a time when many in the community are upset with the second homers or their renters who came to "shelter in place" in South Lake Tahoe, many of homeowners have come together to provide needed housing to agencies bringing in the essential workforce.

"VHRs for Essential Service Workforce" will be providing housing for 7-29 days for those needed in the community during the coronavirus pandemic, those who need to quarantine for themselves or are in town to assist, and not for any other purpose by owners or guests.

Fundraiser set up for those out of work due to business closures in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With a large number of South Lake Tahoe employees currently out of work due to closures mandated by the fight against the coronavirus, a South Lake Tahoe woman has set up a fundraiser to help those financially hurt the most.

Roberta Hainline, housekeeping manager with Vacasa, was concerned after she had to lay off her entire staff of 22.

"I know that all of those people that lost their jobs live paycheck to paycheck. Even though they are eligible for unemployment, the need is immediate," said Hainline, who was also furloughed.

Vail Resorts shutting down all North American operations, including those in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. Vail Resorts announced Saturday that they are suspending the operations of all of their North American mountain resorts, retail stores and corporate offices beginning tomorrow, March 15, 2020, for at least one week (through March 22) to assess the rest of the season.

This includes Heavenly Mountain Resort, Kirkwood Resort and Northstar in the Lake Tahoe area.

New city manager selected for South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Brian Uhler says goodbye; March retirement date set

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In just two weeks the City of South Lake Tahoe will be saying goodbye to its sixth police chief since becoming incorporated in 1965.

Chief Brian Uhler will be wrapping up a 40-year career in law enforcement when he retires from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) on March 12, 2020. He has been the second-longest serving chief, coming within a couple of months of the City's second police chief, John Crow.

Where to watch Superbowl LIV in South Lake Tahoe

Super Bowl LIV, the 54th Super Bowl (the 50th modern-era National Football League championship game) will decide the champion for the NFL's 2019 and 100th season.
