Burn pile spreads into brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe (updated)

Update 12:22PM: A small brush fire on Cold Creek Trail in South Lake Tahoe is contained and burned about one-quarter of an acre, reports U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Cheva Heck. Fire personnel from Lake Valley Fire Protection District and South Lake Tahoe and U.S. Forest Service brought the fire to containment. The cause of the fire is under investigation, Heck said. Initial reports that came in said the fire started as a backyard burn pile.

NHP to step up enforcement on Highway 395 in Douglas County

The Nevada Highway Patrol will step up enforcement on US Highway 395 in Douglas County at the end of this month for a non-disclosed period of time with special emphasis on stopping and citing motorists who exceed the posted speed limit. In an effort to create awareness to this enforcement campaign and to pre-warn motorists from potentially receiving a moving violation citation, we are reminding motor vehicle operators to pay attention while driving and obey all the rules of the road.

Four South Lake Tahoe men face federal charges for alleged snowmobile violations

U.S. Forest Service officers cited four local men for riding snowmobiles at night in the Freel Peak/High Meadows closure area on the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
While on patrol, officers observed fresh snowmobile tracks passing directly underneath closure signs and subsequently encountered the riders. One rider fled the scene, abandoning his snowmobile, which was towed and impounded.

Forest Service cites five for snowmobile violations in wilderness area

Five men from the South Lake Tahoe and Carson Valley areas face fines after being cited by the U.S. Forest Service for riding snowmobiles in the Mokelumne Wilderness on the Eldorado National Forest. Snowmobiling and any kind of motorized activity is illegal in nationally-designated wilderness areas.
The riders were issued mandatory notices to appear before the federal magistrate in Sacramento.

The Basic Speed Law Still Exists on US Highway 50

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department desires to share some important information with our public about the raising of speed limit on US Highway 50 through the city limits. Based upon the latest Caltrans traffic and engineering study, the speed limit will increase by 5 mph from what is currently posted. However, until the new speed limit signs are posted along US Highway 50, the existing speed limit signs are currently not enforceable, per se. While we are in this transition, we strongly encourage our residents and visitors to continue following the currently posted speed limit signs.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is preparing itself for the upcoming New Years Eve celebration at Lake Tahoe, on Saturday, December 31st, 2011. Each year upwards of 50,000 celebrants ring in the New Year in the casino core area of Stateline, Nevada.

Forest Service reminds public no fireworks on New Year's

At the urging of the U.S. Forest Service, visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin should leave their fireworks at home over the New Year's holiday.
“The use of all fireworks is prohibited on all national forests and national grasslands. Regulations are enforced, and violation is punishable as a misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000, or imprisonment of not more than six months, or both,” said Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson.

Settlement reached in Tahoe pier dispute

UPDATED 5:19PM: Environmental regulators and a Lake Tahoe property owner who has hosted events for the League to Save Lake Tahoe have settled a dispute over environmental rule violations that stretch back to 2008.
Tamara Fritz and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency agreed to terms this week resolving violations between April 2008 and March 2011. Go here for more.
