Letter to the Editor: Rockin' Pinktober in Tahoe

It’s the terrible ‘c’ word, cancer. Almost everyone has someone in their lives battling or who has lost the fight against cancer. It takes a toll on everyone. Personally, I have a cousin who was recently diagnosed with colon cancer and he likely has less than two years with his family.

Bread & Broth holds two meals weekly throughout the year and everyone in the community is invited to enjoy the communal dinners offered every Monday and Friday at St. Theresa Church Grace Hall (Second Serving will return to the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church once the fire damage has been mitigated). The Monday Meal, served from 4 – 5:30 p.m., is a hot, nutritious, full-course dinner and the Second Serving meal, served on Fridays from 4 – 5:00 p.m. is a soup served with a simple entrée.

Over 300 Vail employees volunteer during 10th annual EpicPromise Week

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — More than 300 employees from Vail resorts at Lake Tahoe - Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar - joined in during the 10th year of Vail's EpicPromise Week and volunteered hundreds of hours with local community programs focused on youth, education and the environment. This year they teamed up and contributed to four different projects around Lake Tahoe.

Redefining Organics gets go ahead for cannabis business from Planning Commission

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The first cannabis business to be created after the passage of an ordinance approved by the South Lake Tahoe City Council passed a big hurdle Thursday. The South Lake Tahoe Planning Commission voted 5-0 to approved the cannabis use permit application for Redefining Organics, LLC and recommended to the City Council they approve the required development agreement.

They also recommended to Council they have both a first and second reading of the development agreement at their October 1 City Council Meeting.

Following their Adopt-A-Day (AAD) of Nourishment sponsorship on August 26, Liberty Utilities sent another great crew on September 2 to assist the Bread & Broth volunteers with another AAD dinner. Just as they provide incredible service to their customers, the Liberty Utilities AAD sponsor crew members, Jennifer Guenther, James Martin, Kate Marrone, Chad Sousa and Kelsey Zieba, also provided the same spirit of service in helping others at their sponsorship dinner.

Bread & Broth volunteers were in for a real treat when Liberty Utilities wanted to sponsor two Monday Meal dinners in a row. The Lake Tahoe utility company’s first Adopt A Day of Nourishment was held on August 26 and was to be followed by their second sponsorship on September 2. On the 26th Liberty Utilities’ sponsor crew, consisting of Kurt Althof and Blaine Ladd, were very enthusiastic and eager to embrace the opportunity to pitch in and serve the vulnerable of the community.

Long-time South Lake Tahoe resident Janet McDougall sponsored Bread & Broth’s July 1st Adopt A Day of Nourishment. “I like to sponsor a day once each year to honor the memory of my parents, Mac and Jackie McDougall,” shared Janet. For four years Janet has been sponsoring a meal which feeds a nutritious and well-balanced meal to up to 100 dinner guests and she can always to counted on to support Bread & Broth’s program of easing hunger for those in need.

On June 24th, Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal fed 96 community members who arrived at St. Theresa’s Grace Hall between 4:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to be served beef stroganoff, sautéed zucchini, a green salad, fresh apricots and a lovely assortment of desserts. Sponsoring the meal for the evening was Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, whose $300 donation helped cover the costs of the meal, and who provided five Hard Rock team members to participate in their Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsorship.

Vail Resort’s EpicPromise grants are distributed to over 50 non-profits in the Lake Tahoe South Shore community annually. These grant funds are used by the recipient organizations to support a variety of non-profit programs which benefit children, mental illness programs, environmental projects, to name just a few. Bread & Broth (B&B) is an EpicPromise Grant recipient and a portion of the funds go to sponsoring 12 Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) Monday Meal dinners each year.

Every month, a wonderful, generous and fun-loving group of ladies mainly from the Zephyr Heights area gather together to visit, share family news and enjoy each other’s company. For over 18 years, 8 to 14 ladies from the Zephyr Heights Breakfast Club make the monthly meeting. During the past holiday season, some of the ladies decided that rather than exchanging gifts, they really wanted to help others.

Mickey and Doug had been married for 48 years. He is also survived by daughter Shannon Crowe, daughter Kendra Miesner, and granddaughters Brianna and Adrienne. He was an avid dog lover and Cleo and Jake will miss him very much.

Two very generous anonymous Adopt A Day of Nourishment sponsors donated $300 to fund Bread & Broth’s Monday Meal on May 27th. Since the donors were not available to attend their sponsorship dinner, members of Unity at the Lake Church were more than thrilled to be asked to step in as the Adopt A Day sponsor crew volunteers and help serve the 95 dinner guests attending the evening’s meal.

Twice yearly, the Harrah’s and Harveys HEROs (Harrahs Employees Reaching Out) sponsors a Bread & Broth Adopt A Day (AAD) of Nourishment meal to help others in the Lake Tahoe South Shore Community.

On April 22, the HEROs were back hosting an AAD at St. Theresa Grace Hall sponsoring the evening meal. “We all enjoyed serving our local community, especially at Easter time,” said HERO member Janice Blanchard. “It was a fantastic experience to celebrate and serve on Earth Day!”

Volunteers needed in South Lake Tahoe for home delivered meal program

The El Dorado County Senior Nutrition Program is currently looking for dedicated, caring volunteers for the Home Delivered Meal program in South Lake Tahoe. Each volunteer generally works one day a week on an assigned route, delivering meals between 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to older adults in the community who have become more homebound due to health or other reasons. The meals are prepared in advance by the Senior Nutrition program and volunteers deliver those meals.

South Tahoe High grad returns to SLT: Looking for CASA volunteers to fill big void

Tahoe is a glorious place. Most of us come here to live in its beauty, but it’s the “community” that keeps so many of us here. It’s that sense of doing good for one another that keeps many of us hopeful about the future. Tuesday’s Drug Store Project for our sixth-grade youth was a testament to the compassion and dedication of our agencies, businesses, service clubs, and community members for the good of its people.

Tahoe Arts Alliance to hold inaugural awards ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Arts Alliance will hold their inaugural Alliance Awards ceremony in the South Tahoe High School TADA Building on Saturday, April 13. The awards will recognize excellence in visual and performing arts as well as recognition of those who have contributed to and supported local art.

Doors open at 5:00 p.m. Mingling and light refreshments will be from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 6:00 p.m. This is a formal event and "dress to impress."

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

DAR Daughters serve lunch to veterans at LTCC

Daughters of the American Revolution from Lake Tahoe Chapter, NSDAR, showed their patriotism and community spirit by providing hot lunches during finals week to the veterans who attend Lake Tahoe Community College.

National Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week is April 7 through 13, 2019, a time to recognize the many contributions of Animal Services officers, shelter and office staff, and volunteers in El Dorado County.

“Working and volunteering in the animal services field requires a strong passion for helping animals and serving others,” said Henry Brzezinski, Chief of El Dorado County Animal Services. “The work can sometimes be difficult, but we love what we do. 4th annual South Lake Tahoe Science Fair

The 4th annual South Lake Tahoe Science Expo will be held in the Lake Tahoe Community College gymnasium April 2-5, 2019 with a public Science Expo held on Thursday, April 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The theme this year is Physical Science.

Ages 6-12 and their families are invited to engage in hands-on science investigations and experiments. Over 30 activities at the expo will focus on the properties of matter, physical and chemical changes, energy and energy transfer, forces and motion, magnetism, air pressure, friction and more.

Taking a break from helping skiers and keeping them safe on Heavenly Mountain Resort’s slopes, Heavenly Ski Patrol members exchanged their skis for Bread & Broth aprons to help feed Monday Meal dinner guests on March 4, 2019. As a follow-up to an Adopt A Day of Nourishment on February 4, Heavenly Ski Patrol sponsored their second AAD for the year and sent another great crew to serve at the B&B dinner.

Joining the B&B volunteers were Ski Patrol members Brandon Commanda, Lucas Johnstone, Michelle Loubet, Jacob Madecky and Marissa Streck.

Free camping and hot springs soak for volunteers at Grover Hot Springs

California State Park Champions volunteer across the state from the ocean to the mountains, and an opportunity is heading to the Sierra at Grover Hot Springs on April 20, 2019 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Help with fire prevention projects by removing invasive weeds that push out the park's native plants and increase fire risks in the park. Volunteers 12 and older welcome (minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian).

After volunteering, enjoy a soak in the park's hot springs pool. Free camping is available for registered volunteers Friday and Saturday nights.

Thanks to Vail’s EpicPromise grant program, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate months sending Adopt A Day sponsor crew teams to host and volunteer at Bread & Broth Monday Meal dinners. On February 24, it was members from Heavenly’s IT team who donned B&B aprons and graciously served the evening’s dinner guests.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife volunteer training signups March 1

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Interested in volunteering for Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care? Now is your chance as the spring volunteer training session sign-ups start at 9:00 a.m. on March 1.

This year there will be training and education offered over two different weekends with a class on Saturday, May 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. covering general wildlife care information, and a separate hands-on training with their animal care team in early June for those who are interested in regularly volunteering at their South Lake Tahoe facility.

There are two Soroptimist International clubs serving South Lake Tahoe and the surrounding community and they recently came together to celebrate 100 years of global volunteering that improves the lives of women and girls.

With a big winter snow storm hitting the Tahoe area on Monday, February 2, there was no better crew to have sponsor the Adopt A Day of Nourishment meal than Heavenly’s Ski Patrol members. This crew braved the snowy roads and whiteout conditions to come to St. Theresa Church Grace Hall and help provide a hot and filling beef stroganoff dinner to the hungry folks who faced difficult conditions to attend B&B’s Monday Meal.

On Monday, January 28, Bread & Broth’s 102 dinner guests were treated to a very special dinner. Members of St. Theresa’s Filipino community cooked and served chicken adobo, sweet and sour pork ribs, shrimp and chicken pasta, honey mustard chicken, steamed vegetables, rice, and salad. All delicious Filipino specialty dishes. In addition, to the heaping first servings dished out, many of the diners came back for seconds and containers filled with ‘leftovers’ to take home.
