Fire updates for Northern California fires, Yosemite reopens Tuesday

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for the Sierra, including the Donnell Fire area where 23,824 acres since starting on August 1. Northwest winds and low relative humidity may increase activity along the southern and eastern areas of the fire, keeping smoke away from Lake Tahoe. Concern areas include Long Valley, Haypass, Sardine, and Red Rock Meadows. The fire may also travel in a Southeast direction towards Kennedy Meadows within the Middle Fork Stanislaus River corridor. A Forest Order Closure has been issued for the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness and Spicer Lake.

While staying above normal, temperatures will cool down slightly over the weekend and early next week, espcially in the record breaking areas of Reno and Carson City. Areas of smoke and haze will continue to degrade air quality, especially north and east of the Donnell Fire. There will be a slight chance of thunderstorms well south of Highway 50 this weekend with chances increasing and spreading farther north next week.

Smoke from California fires have plagued the Lake Tahoe Basin for a few weeks, and there is no relief in sight. Afternoon winds stoked the Donnell Fire Wednesday, pushing a large plume of smoke into the atmosphere and sending it right to Lake Tahoe and the Reno/Carson Valley area.

A number of fires across northern and eastern California continue to bring hazy conditions and degraded air quality to northeast California, the Sierra, and western Nevada. According to the National Weather Service in Reno, areas at greatest risk for unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality are from Sonora Pass to South Lake Tahoe and Carson City.

For just the second time, fire crews from California communities came together and stationed themselves in a community other than their own on orders from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services(Cal OES).
A red flag warning was up for the Lake Tahoe Basin Friday and Saturday, with high winds, high temperatures and low humidity in the forecast making the situation ripe for a large fire.
California man drowns in Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of a 21-year-old California man was located in Lake Tahoe Sunday afternoon, more than 24 hours after he jumped off a boat near Edgewood Tahoe.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Office cadaver dogs alerted others to the body of the man about one-quarter mile off shore between Tahoe Meadows and Lakeside Marina just before 5:00 p.m. Sunday, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Officer Traci Trapani.
The identity of the man is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

South Lake Tahoe had a warm July; Week of 80s ahead

When looking back at the month of July, each day's high temperatures in South Lake Tahoe were above average except for one, which was equal to the high. Even though July was a warm month, no record highs were set.
After such a warm month, August is starting out much the same.
Ferguson, Carr, Perry and Whaleback Fires still burning

The Perry Fire burning between Reno and Pyramid Lake has now burned 25,600 acres and is now 15 percent contained. It started Friday evening and the cause is unknown at this time.

There will be widespread haze around Lake Tahoe this weekend as smoke from the Carr Fire near Redding and the Ferguson Fire near Yosemite comes into the Basin. Even with the resulting hazy skies, the air quality has remained in the "good" range with a current AQI of 15 on Saturday morning.
Prolonged heat will affect the region well into next week with highs above 100 degrees in Western Nevada and above 85 near the Sierra. There will be increased winds each afternoon and early evening Wednesday through Friday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the Ferguson Fire outside Yosemite is moved into Lake Tahoe and Carson City area today and more smoke is expected again early Monday. As of Sunday night, the fire has burned 4,310 acres and is two percent contained. An evacuation advisory is in place for the Western Yosemite area.
High pressure will build overhead and bring very hot conditions to Western Nevada Tuesday through Wednesday and warm conditions to the mountains. The high will
begin to move east on Thursday with thunderstorm chances increasing along with gradually cooling temperatures.
James Fire between Genoa and Carson City burns 260 acres, at 30% containment

9:14 p.m. update: The James Loop Fire was reported at 12:45 p.m. at the James Canyon Development near Carson City, Nevada. Tonight, the fire was mapped at 260 acres and is currently 30 percent contained. The fire was caused by heavy equipment working on a new home under construction The fire burned 163 acres of private and 107 acres of Bureau of Indian Affairs lands, but threatened lands
managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The East Fork Fire Protection District was in unified command with the U.S. Forest Service.

Above average temperatures return this weekend through next week with some areas at lower elevations reaching 100 degrees. We will see afternoon and evening breezes each day through Monday, with lighter winds for the rest of next week. There will be increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms by mid to late next week.
Temps will be in the 80s and above average but forecast highs are not going to be record breaking in South Lake Tahoe.

Heat will build through the weekend with afternoon highs returning to the 90s across the lower valleys with 80s in the Sierra. Winds will be light with high pressure over the region. North to northwest winds today will keep smoke from the Lions Fire along the Sierra Crest near and south of Mammoth Mountain according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Winds may be gusty during the Independence Day holiday. This may lead to
hazardous boating and fire weather conditions, exactly their impact will be known as the 4th gets closer.

The Lions Fire actively burning just west of Mammoth Mountain has burned 1,000 acres and is affecting air quality and visibility tonight as smoke settles into valleys.
Started by a lightning strike around noon on June 1 in the Sierra National Forest, the fire is burning near the Lion Point area in the Ansel Adams Wilderness. It crossed onto the Inyo National Forest on June 22 and is now being co-managed by both the Sierra and the Inyo National Forests.

Hot weather continues into next week as high pressure keeps us in a dry air mass with high temperatures remaining above season averages according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. High temperatures will remain 5-10 degrees above average through the weekend with peak heating expected early next week.

As the first day of summer approaches, Mother Nature is having some second thoughts. There i a Lake Wind Advisory in effect on Friday, June 15 from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with winds from the southwest 15-20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph.
Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-3 feet. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.
Fire prompts voluntary evacuations in Carson City

UPDATE 11:09PM: A voluntary evacuation order was placed Tuesday night for the Carson Colony area off of Curry Street in South Carson City. The Voltaire Canyon area is also voluntary evacuation. Plans are in the works to open a shelter for those displaced.

UPDATE 10:54PM: Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said Tuesday night's fire at Voltaire Canyon was started by campers who were burning excrement and toilet paper.
There were two campers detained and were cooperative, said Furlong. There were up to eight individuals who were camping in the area who were taken off the hill.

Strong, gusty winds return to Lake Tahoe and Northern Nevada, with a Lake Wind Advisory in effect most of the day Saturday from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Dry grass and gusty winds will create dangerous conditions for wildfire should a spark set them off....use care when outdoors as the fuels are ready.
Those heading out on Lake Tahoe and other area lakes need to be aware of hazardous boating conditions starting Friday, then going through Saturday. Remember to wear your personal flotation device at all times.

There is a Lake Wind Advisory up for Lake Tahoe for Wednesday, May 30, starting at noon and lasting until 9:00 p.m.
A cycle of pleasant mornings and thunderstorms with rain in the afternoons will possibly repeat for two more days. A low pressure is approaching the west coast. This low will move inland and bring gusty winds Wednesday and Thursday, along with some cooling and continued chances for showers and thunderstorms.
By Friday, generally dry conditions move in with a warming trend through the weekend.

Another low pressure area will settle over California and western Nevada, bringing an increased chance for storms through the remainder of the weekend and into the middle of next week. Some of these storms will produce locally heavy rainfall, especially Monday and Tuesday.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a great day of cycling for the women racing in the Amgen Tour of California, light winds, mild temperatures and clear skies. They left the Heavenly California Lodge at 11:00 a.m. and the first racer crossed the finish line three hours and six minutes later after a trip through Christmas Valley, Hope Valley, Alpine County and the big climb on Kingsbury Grade.
Katie Hall, 31, of Saratoga, California won the day, but it was a close one as she crossed the finish line 29 seconds ahead of Tayler Wiles.

Warm conditions will give way to much cooler temperatures Friday through the weekend as low pressure moves into northeast California and western Nevada. A cold front will produce stronger winds from the north on Friday which may result in areas of blowing dust, choppy lakes, and the potential for some fire weather concerns.

What a palette of color for the sunset Sunday! This was a great day to get out on the bike, work in the garden or do anything outside, and more of the same is ahead for a few days. Warm temperatures will remain in place through mid week with record highs and a few thunderstorms possible on Tuesday. Be prepared for breezy late afternoon and evening winds Tuesday and Wednesday. There was a record high temperature of 71 degrees in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday, breaking the old record of 68 set in 2001. Thursday's forecast is a high of 68, and the record was 71 set in 1992. In true spring fashion, a chance of thunderstorms in the Sierra will last from 1:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Thursday

The famous blue skies of Lake Tahoe have returned, but just for two days as another west system heads in that will be bringing rain and snow.
As the rigorous trough leaves the Sierra, mild and dry conditions return, but are short lived as more storm systems are on the horizon. Gusty winds and light amounts of rain and snow are possible starting Tuesday and lasting into early

There is a very warm, wet storm heading to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and western Nevada, bringing with is gusty winds and significant rains beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday. There is a flood watch in effect from Friday, April 6, 05:00 p.m. until Sunday, April 8 at 5:00 a.m. The main concern is the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, rivers and in urban areas.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Just as many were enjoying sunny skies and temps in the 50s and 60s, Mother Nature is sending a bit of change to the area this week.
Coming in from the west is a significant storm with gusty winds and heavy rains Friday through Sunday. The storm is a warm and wet one so there will be the potential for flooding along creeks, streams and rivers.
Monday will be back in the mid-50s.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Last October, California experienced a series of devastating wildfires that destroyed property and took lives. In a four month period the State endured fires and floods from San Diego to Mendocino that destroyed over 11,000 homes and commercial structures and killed 64 Californians. Local Government fire and rescue personnel and equipment comprised up to 80 percent available resources for mutual aid throughout the State. The City of South Lake Tahoe Fire Department along with other fire agencies around the basin engaged in these critical fire fights.

It looks like just one more storm on the horizon for the Lake Tahoe area with A winter weather advisory in effect from 11:00 p.m. Friday, March 23 until 5:00 a.m. Sunday, March 25. Prior to that warning is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 11:00 p.m. Friday.
A break in precipitation is expected for most of today. Gusty winds develop this afternoon ahead of a couple fast-moving and colder storms that will move through with some snow for northeast California into northwest Nevada this weekend. Avalanche Watch - The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a backcountry avalanche watch for the Greater Lake Tahoe Area from 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to 7:00 a.m. Friday between Yuba Pass at the north and Ebbetts Pass to the south.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The week is starting out beautiful: blue skies, great powder and mile temperatures, but it won't last long.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, light valley rain and Sierra snow and rain will develop Tuesday and Tuesday night, with some travel impacts possible for Sierra and northeast California passes. A second system, which is much stronger, will bring lower valley rain, Sierra rain and snow, and gusty winds starting on Wednesday and continuing until a cold front moves through late Thursday into Friday morning.

Road controls are still up on Lake Tahoe roads as the two day storm that dropped 45" of snow at Heavenly moves to the east. There is a chance of scattered snow showers in South Lake Tahoe with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 31. Winds will be from the southwest 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible. Tonight, isolated snow showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunny and 36 on Sunday!
Lake Tahoe Community College closing at 3PM Friday due to snow

Lake Tahoe Community College will be closing at 3:00 p.m. on Friday March 16 due to a continuing winter storm that is dumping considerable amounts of snow both at lake level and over mountain passes.
All classes and scheduled events planned for 3:00 p.m. or later are cancelled.
Whiteout conditions, strong winds and hazardous driving environments led college leadership to call for an early closure.
They will update their website and Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts, so please check these for any further updates.

March 16 3:00 PM update: Washoe County has issued a Stage 2 Avalanche Alert for the Crystal Bay and Third Creek area. Stage 2 Avalanche Alert Action: In a Stage 2 Avalanche alert, if you choose to evacuate, please do so now or within the next 2-4 hours.
The next and final alert is a Stage 3 Avalanche Alert.
Stage 3 Avalanche Alert Action: A Stage 3 Avalanche alert signifies a shelter-in-place alert and a warning to NOT leave your home for up to 24 hours.

Monday should be a beautiful Spring-like day across the region with highs reaching into the upper 60s across western Nevada and 50s in the Sierra.
There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.

Rain is headed to Lake Tahoe this weekend, but ahead of it will be the wind. There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 4:00 p.m. Thursday with winds 15 mph to 25 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Wave heights could be 2-3 feet from mid-lake to the north and east shores.

The trip to Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 and Interstate 80 Friday was not a pleasant experience for most drivers. Multiple accidents, road closures and heavy snow greeted them throughout the day and night. A winter storm warning is in effect for South Lake Tahoe until 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
It is a cold start to the morning Saturday with 13 degrees at 8:00 a.m. The forecast high for the day is 27. Expect snow showers after 5:00 p.m. with scattered snow showers during the day with an additional 1-3" possible, and another 1-3" possible overnight. Winds 5-10 mph.
Avalanche warning issued for Crystal Bay area

The entire Sierra Nevada are under a high avalanche warning in the back country at all elevations, but now there is a warning in the Crystal Bay area of Lake Tahoe in neighborhoods.
Per the Washoe County Emergency Management avalanche expert, due to weather conditions and forecasted incoming weather conditions, a Stage 1 Avalanche Warning has been issued for the residents of Crystal Bay/Third Creek subdivisions.

The blizzard warnings in the Lake Tahoe basin have prompted school officials to close schools, or in the case of Douglas County, put them on late start.
Lake Tahoe Unified School District is on a Snow Day. All Schools Will be CLOSED today due to the Blizzard Warning issued by the National Weather Service.

An active weather pattern is expected for the upcoming week as two storm systems affect the Sierra and western Nevada.
A Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday, February 26. Snow is expected with total accumulations of 6 - 12 inches expected in the Lake Tahoe area.

Up to a foot of snow fell in the upper elevations of Lake Tahoe during Thursday's storm, with several inches at lake level. As of 9:00 a.m. Friday, controls remain on mountain roads including Highway 50, I-80, SR-88, SR-89, SR-207, SR-431 and SR-28.

Below average temperatures will dominate through at least next week as low pressure remains over the West. A weak system Saturday will bring breezy conditions along with a few snow showers, generally north of Interstate 80. Another stronger system is possible Monday into Tuesday
Jamie Anderson wins silver in Olympic Big Air

With a forecast of gusty winds, the Olympic organizers moved the Women's Snowboard Big Air medal runs up one day, and a South Lake Tahoe resident is walking away with a medal in the first ever Big Air event at the Olympics.
Jamie Anderson added to her medal count, wining a silver medal in Big Air with jumps that scored 90.00 and 87.25. Her third jump did not score.
Austria's Anna Gasser, with a pair of extremely progressive tricks, won the gold in women's snowboard big air with a 89.00 and 96.00. Her first jump did not score.
Winds cause tree to land on top of South Lake Tahoe duplex

High winds caused a tree to fall onto a duplex on Tahoe Vista Drive in South Lake Tahoe, just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 18.
Residents were home in both units and the tree narrowly missed hitting one of the residents according to SLT Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Karl Koeppen.
There were no injuries and one of the family's cat was rescued.
A peak wind gust at the South Lake Tahoe airport was measured at 56 mph as of 10:30 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, with average winds 24-32 mph.
