Four properties face fines from Nevada Gaming Control Board for improper COVID-19 operation

The Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB) has completed 10,135 inspections and opened 156 regulatory cases since gaming properties were able to reopen on June 4 after they were closed for over two months. All have been related to non-compliance with the Board’s Health and Safety Policies issued on May 28. To date, they have alleged findings against four licensees

Remains of missing 20-year-old located; Washoe County Sheriff's Office seeks public's help

The remains of missing 20-year-old Kenyon Wilson were located last week in the vicinity of Moon Rocks Recreation Area, not far from where his heavily damaged car was found on October 20.

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office detectives announced Thursday they are treating this case as a homicide investigation and are asking the public for any information that may help to identify and locate a suspect, or suspects.

All back open after overturned truck closes parts of road in South Lake Tahoe

4:00 p.m. UPDATE: Most likley it will be the rate of speed a truck driver was traveling at that caused a semi-truck carrying woodchips to overturn in South Lake Tahoe Monday morning.

The 51-year-old woman from Placerville who was at the wheel was traveling from the south on Emerald Bay Road/US50 when she attempted a right-hand turn onto Lake Tahoe Blvd./US50. The truck tipped over and the cab and woodchips slide over into the westbound lanes of Lake Tahoe Blvd.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

After a fun homecoming week, students of South Tahoe High School bare down for the upcoming week of midterms and testing. The fall sports season is coming to an end.

On Campus
Midterms are Thursday and Friday next week. Study labs are held after school for support and tutoring in different courses before the tests. Midterms mark the halfway point for the first term of the 2019-2020 year. The stress begins to increase, especially for the seniors.

South Lake Tahoe Highway 50 roadwork update

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Roadwork on a three-year $57 million project along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe is coming to an end. Until November 1, crews will be working on some curb and gutter portions of the road along with some sidewalk repair. They will also be working on electrical components, landscaping, erosion control and painting of lines.

Colder temperatures delay paving Highway 50; Work expected into weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With below-average temperatures in South Lake Tahoe this week, the paving of the Highway 50 project has been delayed and may go into the weekend.

Mid-day Thursday it is still in the 30s though a high of 51 degrees is in the forecast. The low overnight will be 18 degrees.

Six South Lake Tahoe residents part of record 617 graduating class at WNC

Western Nevada College celebrated a record 617 graduates during its commencement ceremony earlier today at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Carson City. The 2019 graduating class will receive 651 degrees and certificates of achievement.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford addressed WNC’s graduating class during its commencement ceremony.

Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Yet another snowfall struck South Tahoe High School, as Spring Break is just around the corner. Students prepared for a busy, stressful week with midterms and college prep testing. Juniors visit Lake Tahoe Community College for a career expo, seniors fight through senior projects, and STHS continues to impress in sports.

Juniors at STHS today participates in LTCC’s Career Expo, as part of the CCC 10-year program that’s taught by Julie Cain, a teacher at STHS.

Senior Jordyn Yochheim said she’s going to go sledding, work on her senior project, and spend time vacationing in San Diego.

Some fire restrictions lifted by USFS in Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest

Bridgeport, Carson City, and Santa Rosa Ranger Districts on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest have lifted their Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, but the Mountain-City-Ruby Mountains-Jarbidge Ranger District’s fire restrictions remain in place as do those in Lake Tahoe.

HIghway 50 roadwork extended to end of month in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Originally planned to wrap up this week, work on the large construction project along US 50 will continue until the end of October, weather permitting.

Expect lane closures along the road (also known as Lake Tahoe Blvd.) near Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue. No detours will be in place. Expect heavy traffic and delays.

Grinding and paving work was completed on Friday, October 5. Caltrans and its contractors are working hard to finish this stretch of the new storm drain system project.

South Lake Tahoe car dealership changes hands

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As the season changes it is also the changing of the guard at Cardinale Way in South Lake Tahoe after it was sold to a Texas company, Jim Bagan Toyota.

Joe Cardinale and Jim Bagan ran into each other at a Mazda convention (both have dealerships with that brand as well as Toyota) a few years ago. Whenever they met up after that Bagan would ask Cardinale when he wanted to sell his South Lake Tahoe location according to General Manager Gary Hamner. Each time Cardinale would say "no" until a few months ago.

The following are projects the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is working on in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

South Lake Tahoe roadwork schedule to change after Labor Day weekend

Due to heavy traffic expected in Lake Tahoe for the Labor Day weekend, Caltrans will suspend roadwork for the holiday, but there will be big changes in their work schedule starting Tuesday, September 4.

In South Lake Tahoe, roadwork on U.S. Highway 50 from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue will be suspended starting Friday, August 31 at 8:00 a.m. and will resume on Tuesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m.

Although Caltrans construction is not happening during Labor Day weekend, there will be heavy traffic and work zones will still be set up. Please "Be Work Zone Alert."

The Borges Family came by Sierra House Elementary School on Tuesday, May 29 to give our 3rd-5th graders a taste of Lake Tahoe History. We had an amazing presentation of Emerson (played by Kim Harris 775-220-0605 kim@westernhistoryalive.com ) as she taught us about the Pony Express; why it came to be, what it was like and why it only in operation for 18 months. We had Sarah Winnemucca (played by Evie Bouette ) teach us a Washoe Indian dance and some of their traditions. We were up and moving and learning!

Lake Tahoe area roadwork June 4 - 9

The following is the Caltrans schedule for Lake Tahoe basin roads this week.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

State Route 49 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $22 million project to replace the South Fork American River Bridge in Coloma-Lotus. This project will make seismic improvements to the new bridge, widen the structure to allow for 8-foot shoulders and 6-foot sidewalks, and also make roadway improvements to State Route 49 on either side of the bridge. Completion is expected in mid-August. No traffic-interfering work is scheduled on the highway.

Roadwork season returns in South Lake Tahoe

The three-year long, $56.9 million Caltrans project on a two-mile stretch of Highway 50 from the Y to the Trout Creek Bridge is set to resume next week in South Lake Tahoe.

Scope of work in 2018 is from Winnemucca Avenue to Silver Dollar Avenue as well as repaving the “Y” intersection. Work is scheduled to begin Monday, April 30 at 6:00 a.m. from Winnemucca Avenue working east. The work schedule for May will be from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

NDOT looking for paid summer interns

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is looking ahead to the summer road construction season by accepting applications for paid summer internships through Feb. 28.

The internships provide on-the-job training in civil and environmental engineering, including roadway and bridge design, construction, hydraulics, materials, as well as traffic engineering, environmental stewardship and highway project administration, maintenance and storm water management.

The internships take place May through August 2018 and pay up to $18 per hour, depending on education and experience.

Safety along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe analyzed

Highway 50 through South Lake Tahoe serves a lot of functions, from a local road for commuters both on bicycles and in cars, to a major highway to transport visitors through the city.
