South Lake Tahoe man awarded Moose International’s highest degree

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Dr. Barry Keil, a member of the South Lake Tahoe Moose Lodge, was awarded the Pilgrim Degree of Merit, the highest level of achievement awarded by Moose International. He was recognized at a ceremony held on June 3 at Moose International Headquarters, located just west of Chicago in Mooseheart, Illinois. There were also 117 additional Moose members from the United States, Canada, and England who received the Pilgrim Degree. Moose Pilgrims from all three nations gathered at Mooseheart to attend the celebration.

Journey of Hope cyclists head east after two day stop in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Friends of the Library are showcasing several Lake Tahoe authors at the Local Authors' Fair on Tuesday, June 27 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Library.

The authors will have tables set up either inside or outside the library (weather permitting). Visit the tables, visit the authors, browse, and discover new books. Several authors will also have short readings. Books will be available to purchase and the event is open to the public.

Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics comes through South Lake Tahoe .

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - For 26 years the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics has been held in Northern California. Known as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members from the Sacramento region, along with inspiring Special Olympics athletes, carried the "Flame of Hope" through the City of Sacramento, culminating at the State Capitol's west steps.

Law enforcement and athletes carried the torch starting Tuesday through 30 counties and over 180 cities.

For a tax-deductible donation of $350, AAD sponsors host a designated Monday Meal. The donated funds are used to help feed up to 100 people with a hot, nutritious, well-balanced meal prepared and cooked by B&B’s talented and creative cooking teams.

Diamond Valley takes flight

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - Inspired by the Hot Air for Hope Balloon Festival, Diamond Valley Elementary School’s 5th and 6th-grade students sought to learn just how balloons fly. Investigation of convection currents proved to be an interesting diversion that led to a challenge to create their own hot air balloons out of tissue paper.

Students spent a few weeks researching and crafting their balloons and then invited their friends and families to the launch day, where balloons and motivation for learning were both lifted high.

Saturday is $5 Community Cleanup Day, seniors can get help with disposal

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's here! On Saturday, June 10, Clean Tahoe is holding its annual $5 Community Cleanup Day, fondly known as Dump Day. Get rid of the items you've had in the grade or house, waiting to be taken to the dump. It is held at the South Tahoe Refuse Transfer Station.

New this year is a service for senior citizens only. Help is available for seniors that have a hard time transporting and disposing of furniture or other bulk items. Seniors need to call 530-544-4210 to make an appointment to get items picked up.

Tahoe Learning Haven offering free forum on outdoor learning adventures for teachers, parents, and daycare providers

South Tahoe High graduate creates BlueZone Sports mural in Reno

RENO, Nev. - South Lake Tahoe native, and South Tahoe High School grad, Rowena Piñero, is being celebrated for her mural on the new BlueZone Sports building in mid-town Reno at the Reno Public Market.

Rowena graduated from South Tahoe High in 2014 and Truckee Meadows Community College in 2022 from their design program, and has been working as a full-time designer with Design on Edge in Reno since graduation.

Free microchip and vaccination clinic for dogs and cats from Glenbrook to Meyers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Tahoe Truckee is holding a free vaccine and microchip clinic in South Lake Tahoe on Tuesday, June 13 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

This free clinic is for pets from Glenbrook to Meyers and is not limited to South Lake Tahoe residents. Bring your dog on a leash and cat in a carrier.

MEYERS, Calif. - Community volunteers came together on a beautiful Saturday morning last weekend to help prepare Tahoe Paradise Park in Meyers for the summer season.

South Tahoe High Sober Grad Night needs financial help from the community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 31st annual South Tahoe High Sober Grad Night will be held for graduates on June 16. The committee is seeking donations from the community to make it a night to remember for the Class of 2023.

Each year the Safe and Sober Grad Night Organization, a local 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, run by a dedicated team of local volunteers, fundraises and coordinates the logistics for this one-of-a-kind event.

An in-kind Vail Resorts grant supports the event every year. This year it will be held at Heavenly’s California Base Lodge from 9 p.m. to 2:30 a.m.

Wildlife Wednesdays are back this summer at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The popular Wildlife Wednesdays return this summer at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC)'s South Lake Tahoe facility.

On Wednesday, June 7, Denise Upton, LTWC wildlife education coordinator, will host a 1-hour presentation and Q&A about porcupines, and LTWC ambassador animal, Porky, a North American Porcupine will make a guest appearance.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the month of April, Bread & Broth 4 Kids (BB4K) volunteers hosted a booth at Flatstick Pub to raise money for the weekend food bag program. Flatstick donated $1 to the organization for every round of mini golf played and for every beer purchased all day on Sundays during the month. A total of $1,445 was raised during the month.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) on Wednesday recognized six individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to protecting Lake Tahoe as this year’s Lake Spirit Award winners. The recipients this year include one North Shore and one South Shore recipient for each of the three categories of Citizen, Agency Representative, and Lifetime Achievement, the agency said today.

"Superwoman" Joanne Shope retires after 28 years with Christmas Cheer

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At the age of 90, most people have already been enjoying several years of retirement, but that hasn't been the case for Joanne Shope of South Lake Tahoe.

Since 1995, Joanne has been a volunteer at Christmas Cheer, the last nine of those years as the non-profit's unpaid executive director.

Christmas Cheer is a local non-profit food pantry that provides monthly staples and perishable food to residents in need, along with clothing, shoes, toys, and household items.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund celebrates nonprofits, reveals new sponsor program


LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - The Tahoe Women's Community Fund (TWCF) celebrated its mission, the community, and nonprofits at its 8th annual Grants Gala on May 24 at the 4-H Camp at Stateline.

With 25 nonprofits in attendance and over 100 members, TWCF celebrated all the amazing organizations, their uplifting stories, and the funding its members provided. The 13 nonprofits who received $100,000 collectively in 2022, presented their stories, while 12 other nonprofits were there to receive their funding for 2023.

Memorial Day Ceremony at Happy Homestead Cemetery in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There will be a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29 at 11 a.m. at the Happy Homestead Cemetery. The Stella Van Dyke Johnson American Legion Post 795 of South Lake Tahoe invites everyone to join the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary, and Sons of the American Legion at the ceremony.

The cemetery is located at1261 Johnson Blvd. in South Lake Tahoe.

Meyers OMG Fun Run registration now open

The 7th annual OMG Fun Run will be held on Sunday, June 4 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the Old Meyers Grade (OMG) in Meyers. Registration is now open for the fun event that raises funds for the Meyers Community Foundation.

Registration is open through June 4 at 8 p.m. Advance registration is $15 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under) and includes a free OMG t-shirt. Kids under 5 attend free (but do not receive a shirt). Registration on the day of the event is $20 for adults and $10 for children and will be held onsite at Old Meyers Grade from 8:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m.

Kudos: Vail Resort’s EpicPromise grant supports Bread and Broth

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Every year Vail Resort provides funding through their EpicPromise Grant program to non-profit organizations in communities where their ski resorts are located. In addition to awarding funds for the Bread and Broth 4 Kids’ program, Bread & Broth (B&B) also received $3,600 for Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort to share the hosting of 12 Adopt A Day of Nourishment (AAD) sponsorships throughout 2023.

2023 El Dorado County Senior of the Year winners and nominees

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - The votes are in for the 2023 Senior of the Year award in El Dorado County. Maureen and Jim Carter, both residents of Placerville, were named as recipients of the award during the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors meeting on May 16. Maureen and Jim were recognized for their exemplary volunteer service and community contributions in El Dorado County. In addition to Maureen and Jim, twelve other seniors from El Dorado County were recognized as nominees for the Senior of the Year award.
