What is it?

A number of special events occur throughout the year in Genoa, but none are more significant than the annual Genoa Candy Dance Arts & Crafts Faire. This event, which boasts over 340 arts and crafts, activity, and food vendors, draws thousands of people to Genoa during the two-day event on September 24/25. It runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - The Tahoe Fund and EarthViews released the first-ever “Street View” style map of all 72 miles of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline. This new, interactive Lake Tahoe ShoreView Map offers a 360-degree view of the shoreline, as well as underwater views and water quality data.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Join in the seasonal fun at the annual Oktoberfest party at South Lake Brewing Company on Saturday, September 24.

Join them for the release of two seasonal brews, limited edition steins and shirts, games and prizes, live music from Miki Rae and the Bison Bluegrass Band, face painting and kids activities, traditional German food from Street Dogs and Big Bertha, and more. Get your lederhosen and dirndls ready for the costume contest.

Admission is free and the festivities start at noon. Prost!

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For over week firefighters have been fighting the Mosquito Fire which is now 67,669 acres. The containment line remains at 20%. Currently, 3,873 personnel are assigned to the fire.

Author Christopher C. Couper will be featured at the next Lake Tahoe Historical Society Fireside Chat on Tuesday, September 27 at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the historic Camp Richardson Hotel. Couper will be sharing his new book, From Ranch to Resort: The History of Sierra-at-Tahoe. The book is packed full of the ski resort's 75-year history, from its conception as Sierra Ski Ranch until now, the rebirth of Sierra-at-Tahoe after the Caldor Fire took out much of its tree-lined terrain.

The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is offering the program for free, and the public is invited.

STATELINE, Nev. - Keith Urban stopped by Lake Tahoe with his Speed of Now World Tour for two shows this week. He filled the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys on Thursday and Friday, September 1 and 2.

His high-energy blend of country and rock music keep the fans on their feet, especially when he went into the audience, stopping by the bleachers for a close-up song and guitar giveaway. It was non-stop Urban energy for almost three hours.

Historian and author Mark McLaughlin will speak on “The Lake Tahoe Water Wars” on Saturday, September 10, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Dangberg Historic Park.

In the 1860s, a San Francisco-based engineer, Colonel Alexis Waldemar von Schmidt, acquired a half-section of land surrounding the Truckee River outlet in Tahoe City and the right to appropriate five hundred cubic feet per second of lake water.

UPDATE: With the current threat and uncertainty of the Mosquito Fire, organizers have had to move the concert. It was either cancel, or move the UB40/Wailers/Maxi Priest/Big Mountain concert set for Sept. 22.

Fortunately, the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno has allowed them to move this event to their Grand Theater on the same day to save the show.

Enjoy Eastern Sierra historian David Woodruff as he assumes the character of one of the wealthiest men in the United States in the 1930s, George Whittell, Jr. The eccentric local kept an African Lion for a pet, built one of the most beautiful pleasure crafts to navigate Lake Tahoe, entertained former Presidents, and unintentionally conserved a large portion of Lake Tahoe lands for the public to enjoy today.

“George Whittell-The Accidental Conservationist" is in the Valhalla Grand Hall on Friday, September 2, 2022, at 7:30 p.m. The event is free to attend.

The South Lake Tahoe Republican Women are having a luncheon meeting at Casey’s Restaurant in Round Hill on Thursday, September 8, at 11:30 a.m. The three Republican South Lake Tahoe City Council candidates are welcome to attend and speak during the luncheon. Per their bylaws, they are only able to invite Republicans.

The club held its annual BBQ on August 13. Approximately 60 guests enjoyed a BBQ prepared by the members and a fun raffle.

TOCCATA-Tahoe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus is performing at a series of 9/11 memorial concerts, Remembrance. Under the direction of James Rawie, artistic director and conductor, the concerts will also feature Sarah Coyl, a guest violinist.

They will be performing Bruch: Violin Concerto #1, and Mozart: Requiem.

Produced as a staged reading, audiences will meet a psychologist on the brink of retirement who suddenly finds himself with two new clients – but one of them is a ghost in Oded Gross’s play “Ghost Writer”; explore the nature of childhood friendships that stay with us throughout life in “The Letter,” by Bill Blush; and consider what makes a life worth living in Tony Pasqualini’s “Benign Departures.”

Wylder Resort Hope Valley continues its Eastern Sierra history series with a living history presentation - “Those That Survived-Living History" on Saturday, August 13 at 2 p.m.

David and Gayle Woodruff adopt the characters of Donner Party organizer and survivors, James and Margret Reed as they recount the gripping tale, of the courageous and heroic efforts of Reed and others, who saved the lives of 45 of the 81 destitute soles, who were trapped by severe, early season snowstorms in the Sierra Nevada Mountains during the winter of 1846-47.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Concours d'Elegance returns to Lake Tahoe after a three-year absence on August 12-13, 2022. This 48th annual event will be held at the historic Obexer's Boat Company in Homewood, Calif.

This is the most acclaimed and prestigious wooden and classic boat show in North America.

Presented by the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation and its perpetual partner, Tahoe Luxury Properties, Concours d'Elegance is an unrivaled exhibition of boating and maritime tradition and will feature more than 60 wooden boats including 40 classic Chris-Crafts.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For 20 years, between 1856 and 1876, the legendary Snowshoe Thompson delivered mail between Placerville and Genoa (and for a time, Virginia City). He did it by the Norweigan version of snowshoes, looking like very long cross-country skis. It took him three days on this eastward journey, two days back to Placerville, carrying on his back a 60-100 pound package of mail.

The U.S. Forest Service Taylor Creek Visitor's Center will host an evening with John "Snowshoe" Thompson on Friday, August 5 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in their Lake of the Sky amphitheater.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is hosting another evening of history on the beach on Tuesday, August 2 at 7 p.m. Hear from several longtime local residents, two have experienced nine decades of life on the South Shore!

Remember when Lake Tahoe Boulevard was one lane in each direction? When Ski Run was actually a ski run? Seeing movies in a quonset hut? Times before there was a City of South Lake Tahoe?

Hear from Carolyn Meiers, Dave Wakeman, Bob Harms, and others as they share stories. There will be time for questions and answers as well.

The Muralist Susie Alexander of recently completed an artistic rendering of Lake Tahoe’s underwater habitat in the lounge area of the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center. The exhibit shows shallow habitat, deep water habitat, and living aquatic organisms that you might find in those underwater environments.

“This has been such an inspiring three-plus weeks of painting at the UC Davis Tahoe Science Center. I am so inspired to continue painting water. It has become an important topic in the West,” says Alexander.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The 15th anniversary of the Tahoe Art League's annual self-guided Artist Studio Tour starts Friday, July 29, and is a unique opportunity to visit with artists from a wide range of multiple mediums including photographers, woodworkers, jewelers, painters, printmakers, and ceramicists.

The El Dorado National Forest Interpretive Association is offering two upcoming hikes for the public to enjoy, both free of charge.

On July 29, there is an interpretive hike, “The Geology of Carson Pass,” starting at 10:30 a.m., and will start at the Carson Pass Information Station on California Hwy 88. Learn about the amazing geological formations around the area. These hikes are designed for people who can hike a couple of miles and appreciate the rocks as much as the flowers. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Historical Society is hosting another History Talk on the Beach on Tuesday, July 26 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. This week their guest speaker in South Lake Tahoe urbanized bear expert Toogee Sielsch. He'll be discussing the history of the black bear in Lake Tahoe as well as the current situation.
