Winter storm, high wind and flood warnings for Lake Tahoe Basin

"If you want to see the sunshine, you have to weather the storm," says the old quote, and if you want to see this weekend's clear and sunny skies you'll have to get through two days of rain, wind and snow.

The National Weather Service has issued three warnings for the Lake Tahoe Basin:

High Wind Warning in effect until Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Winds will be from the southwest 25 TO 40 mph with gusts 65-70 mph. Gust over 80 mph likely in wind prone areas around Reno, Carson City and Minden. Sierra ridge gusts up to 130 mph. Waves on the lake will be 3 to 7 feet.

Prescribed burns resume around South Lake Tahoe

If weather conditions allow, the California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service have scheduled prescribed fire operations at four South Lake Tahoe area locations.

South Upper Truckee area (B on the map) - 50 acres of hand piles will be burned by USFS starting December 12 and continuing as conditions permit. Seven days burn down time. Smoke should flow North /Northeast.

North Upper Truckee area (D on the map) - 12 acres of hand piles will be burned by USFS starting December 12 and continuing as conditions permit. Seven days burn down time. Smoke should flow North /Northeast.

USFS looking for volunteers for Winter Trek snowshoe program at Heavenly

Are you a college student looking to intern for the winter? Are you a retired school teacher but miss your students, love to snowshoe and want to give back to the community? Or maybe you simply love the outdoors and working with children and want to be involved in your community. The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is seeking volunteers to assist with the 2017 Winter Trek Conservation Education Program that begins January 2017, at Heavenly Mountain Resort.

Over thousands of years of human history, we have effectively become an indoor species. 8 Dew Tours and counting: Jaime Anderson sets off on new season

As one of the most decorated athletes in snowboarding, Olympic Gold Medalist, Jamie Anderson has competed in almost every Dew Tour since the event started in 2008. Now, at the age of 26, Jamie has literally has grown up with the contest and looks forward to the event each year as the first major slopestyle contest to kick off her season.

Van Sickle Bi-State Park closes to cars for season, pedestrians welcome

The gates have closed to Van Sickle Bi-State Park in South Lake Tahoe, but the grounds will remain open for the public to enjoy year-round.

The California Tahoe Conservancy announced the closure today and wants to remind park users that when the gates close, services such as water, restrooms and trash collection are not available.

Fall and winter park users are reminded to park legally and not to block the gate, and to pack out your garbage so the park can remain clean for all others to follow, and to protect the wildlife.

Pedestrian and bicycle transportation and safety highlighted at Nevada Summit

Developed to augment statewide bicycle and pedestrian resources, the summit will provide the latest information on bicycle tourism, facility planning and design, safety, enforcement and education initiatives, as well as Safe Routes to School and complete streets program information and more.

Meyers community holds annual outdoor gear swap

Shoppers and swappers are invited to head to Meyers Community Foundation's 3rd annual Gear Swap on Sunday, October 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Westgate parking lot adjacent to the Divided Sky and Downtown Cafe.

For those wishing to sell their quality summer and winter gear, drop off times are from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. They would like to have outerwear, skis, snowboards, bikes, paddle gear, climbing gear, camping equipment, and other outdoor toys. They ask that no equipment over five years old be brought for sale.

Fall colors in abundance: Wind, rain and snow in forecast

Fall colors are near their peak in Lake Tahoe and Hope Valley, and with wind, rain and snow in the forecast, this may be the last few days to witness their spectacular golds, yellows and reds.

Not quite time to get on the slopes, but it certainly appears Mother Nature will attempt to get snow in the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend with snow levels forecast at lake level. Light snow is expected and there may be impacts to travelers over Highways 50 and 80.

Dusting of snow at higher elevations

During a temporary halt to summer, snow fell on the upper elevations of the Sierra Nevada overnight. At Kirkwood, their Cornice Chair camera picked up the first sight of snow in months.

The base of Kirkwood is at 7800 ft, and the summit sits at 9800 ft and a dusting of snow could be seen Tuesday morning around the resort.

But, the wet and cold front is out of the Lake Tahoe Basin quickly and summer sets back in. The first day of Fall is September 22.

Mary Pickford was America’s Sweetheart. Pickford was an actress on the stage and in film, a writer, a producer, a director, and co-founder of a movie studio. She socialized with Hollywood’s most famous stars and married a swashbuckling film hero, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1955, Mary Pickford published her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadows. In this presentation, Pickford will discuss her book and her life.

New interactive Tahoe bike map released by Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition

Cyclists in and around the Lake Tahoe Basin and Truckee now have a new tool to use when navigating trails and roads thanks to the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaltion.

They have unveiled an interactive, online map, one that was designed to match the needs of people biking around Tahoe. It provides bike route directions, elevation profiles and location information for amenity and safety concerns, while at the same time offering an opportunity for community input.

Buffalo Bill's Wild West Exhibition

Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Exhibition comes to the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 27, beginning at 11:00 am.

The Grand March & Opening Ceremony will feature the Douglas High School Marching Band, the 1st Nevada Cavalry Co. D. along with bugler Ray Ahrenholz, and a cast of celebrities and presenters. Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” for the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony will feature Krista Jenkins singing "America the Beautiful".

Chautauqua of John Muir by Don Baldwin

Don Baldwin will portray John Muir, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 24, at 6:30 pm.

Known as "John of the Mountains", Muir was a Scottish-American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His letters, essays, and books telling of his adventures in nature, especially in the Sierra Nevada of California, have been read by millions. Muir’s activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas.

Jobe SUP 2 the People paddleboard demo tour at North Shore

An international paddleboard company, Jobe Sports, will be at Hidden Beach in Incline Village on Saturday, August 13 from noon to 2:00 p.m. They are offering a free paddleboarding event where rigid and inflatable paddleboards will be available for everyone to test out.

They'll also be giving away sponsored swag and gifts as well.

The Jobe Sports month-long tour started in San Diego in July and has made it to Lake Tahoe.

Chautauqua of Stephen T. Mather by Steve Hale

Steve Hale will portray Stephen T. Mather, first director of the National Park Service, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 10, at 6:30 pm.

Stephen Tying Mather distinguished himself as a consummate salesman, including the iconic 20 Mule Team Borax brand, which helped him amass a fortune by the early 20th century. After visiting the new western national parks and meeting John Muir, Mather went on to mold the vision of the new National Park Service and was honored by being appointed its first director in 1916.

A Weekend of Dangberg Family History
