19th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - John Albert Thompson, a Norwegian immigrant nicknamed Snowshoe Thompson, was the legendary 'Mailman of the Sierras' and a man many consider to be the father of California skiing.

His life will be celebrated in South Lake Tahoe on March 2, 2019, during the 19th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost for the day is a $10 donation for adults and kids under 12 are free.

Ski for free on Olympic trails at Sugar Pine Point State Park

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.

The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.

Heavenly and Northstar celebrate opening day in Lake Tahoe

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Heavenly Mountain kicked off it’s opening day Friday with the Gondola and Tamarack Express spinning at 9:00 a.m. Skiers and riders enjoyed their first taste of the slopes on California Trail and Tamarack Return.

There was a pre-opening celebration at the base of the Gondola in South Lake Tahoe at 8:00 a.m. Those early risers enjoy music by a DJ, fresh coffee, hot chocolate, and donuts to stay toasty. The rest of the day had live music, ski and snowboard gear giveaways, group photos and food.

Vail resorts in Lake Tahoe prepare for November opening dates

With a drop in overnight temperatures, Heavenly and Northstar's snowmaking teams have fired up their snow guns to lay down a good base in time for their opening days before Thanksgiving.

They are working towards the following opening days: Friday, Nov. 16 at Heavenly and Northstar and Wednesday, Nov. 21 at Kirkwood.

Season ends this weekend at Bijou Golf Course

Lake Tahoe's oldest golf course will be closing for the season this weekend. The City of South Lake Tahoe's seasonal Bijou Golf Course will wrap up their 2018 season on Sunday, October 21.

The last tee time will be at 3:00 p.m.

"On behalf of the City of South Lake Tahoe, we thank you for another great season at the oldest golf course in the Tahoe Basin ~ The Bijou," golf course management said in a press release.

It's Marathon Week in Lake Tahoe; Expect road closure October 14

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Lake Tahoe Marathon is October 12-14, 2018 with 1,800 athletes headed to town for the race. Over 20 events will take place around Lake Tahoe during the three days of fun and festivities this year, the 23rd year of the Marathon. Over 2,500 family members and friends are also expected to travel to the lake to watch and enjoy the town.

New deputy forest supervisor selected for Lake Tahoe Basin

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is pleased to announce that Danelle D. Harrison was selected as the new Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Harrison arrived at the LTBMU a few weeks ago and comes to us from the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona, where she served as the District Ranger for both the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts since 2014.

Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition distributes over 200 free bike racks throughout Tahoe Basin

The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition is distributing 215 free bicycle racks throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin, creating secure parking for 430 bicycles at key public destinations.

Supported by funding from the Tahoe Fund and the Nevada Commission on Tourism and in-kind support from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the nonprofit Bike Coalition is distributing the high-quality bike racks to Tahoe’s local jurisdictions and government agencies. Tahoe Peak Bagger Deluxe: For the 10,000’+ Crowd

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) is calling all baggers to join them in a challenging guided day hike over two beautiful summits on the Tahoe Rim Trail system, Relay Peak (10,342’) and Mt. Houghton (10,494’) to catch that view.

Throughout the 12-mile loop, expect to see expansive views of Lake Tahoe and as far north as Lassen on a good day, plenty of wildflowers, and they’ll even throw in a waterfall in.

Bike challenge week riders pedal 11,215 miles and save $2,493 in gas purchases

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

Hike with a ranger this summer in Lake Tahoe

Try something new this summer as you're enjoying Lake Tahoe and the National Forest lands - Hike with a ranger!

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) and Heavenly Mountain Resort invigte everyone to Hike with a Ranger this summer. The one-hour long hikes will take place every Friday and Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at the top of the Heavenly Gondola.

Hikes will continue will continue every weekend through September 2, 2018, weather permitting.

Tahoe Windjammers presents Annual Sailing Clinic

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) has published the summer 2018 edition of Tahoe In Depth. The award-winning newspaper, in its sixth year of publication, strives to provide residents, visitors, and policymakers with information about protecting, enjoying, and exploring the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The summer 2018 edition includes a special report on 10 years of fighting aquatic invasive species at Lake Tahoe, as well as the 10th anniversary of the watercraft inspection program that has successfully prevented any new introductions of aquatic invasive species over the last decade.

Coast Guard rescues teen paddle boarders on Lake Tahoe

The Coast Guard rescued two stand-up paddle boarders who were observed struggling on Lake Tahoe, Tuesday afternoon.

A good Samaritan called 911 at approximately 4:00 p.m., reporting two teenage boys adrift and struggling to paddle upwind near Rubicon Point on Lake Tahoe, which was relayed to Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe watchstanders.

A Station Lake Tahoe 25-foot response boat crew was dispatched to the scene. The crew took the paddlers aboard and transported them to Lester Beach with no reported injuries.

Chautauqua of John Steinbeck and Star Party at Dangberg Historic Park

Chautauquan Tom Lorentzen will portray American author John Steinbeck at 6:30 pm, followed by stargazing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada at 9:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 13 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. Among his classic works are The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. Although most recognized for his fiction, Steinbeck also wrote non-fiction.

Two new state parks for Nevada

The Nevada Division of State Parks has not established a new state park in over 20 years, but now the organization is set to unveil a pair of new state parks, the Ice Age Fossils State Park and the Walker River State Recreation Area.

Ice Age Fossils State Park is located in North Las Vegas Valley near the Floyd Lamb County Park.

The Walker River Recreation Area, located in Mineral and Lyon counties will incorporate 29 scenic miles of the East Walker River in Western Nevada and is made up of four former ranches, the Pitchfork, Rafter 7, Flying M and the Nine Mile Ranch properties.

National Trails Day community cleanup in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) and partners, the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and US Forest Service, are organizing a morning community trailhead cleanup on Saturday, June 2 at 9:00 a.m.

Celebrate National Trails Day, the nation’s largest gathering of trails by volunteering cleaning up the South Shore. Volunteers are needed to help remove graffiti off of massive granite boulders and remove garbage on a trail connector into Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

National Trails Day hike at Van Sickle Bi-State Park

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The public is invited to join the Sugar Pine Foundation and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 2, at Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

The two organizations are teaming up for a morning of education and fun on the three- mile hike from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m.

On the way up to enjoy panoramic vistas with a brief visit to a waterfall, delve into the intriguing natural and human history of the area, discuss forest topics related to the trail you’re passing through, and see firsthand the impacts of a wildfire burn zone.

Tahoe Bike Challenge June 1-14

Run the Carson Valley Days parade route in 5k Fun Run

Historic Tahoe Trout Farm opens for season

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The historic Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe will open for the 2018 season on May 1.
