SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - John Albert Thompson, a Norwegian immigrant nicknamed Snowshoe Thompson, was the legendary 'Mailman of the Sierras' and a man many consider to be the father of California skiing.

His life will be celebrated in South Lake Tahoe on March 2, 2019, during the 19th annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The cost for the day is a $10 donation for adults and kids under 12 are free.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Ski on the trails made famous in the 1960 Winter Olympics during a free ski day at Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park on Saturday, February 2 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

California State Parks and the Sierra State Parks Foundation are bringing back groomed Nordic skiing at the park and have invited the public to enjoy the sport in the same spot the biathlon and cross-country events of the Olympics were held.

The latest round of winter storms has brought in plenty of fresh snow for the park to offer this popular pastime.

The Tahoe Adventure Film Festival (TAFF) is like no other film festival in the world and the public is invited to find out all about it when they celebrate their annual event on December 8, 2018 at MontBleu Resort, where it all began 16 years ago.

Lake Tahoe's oldest golf course will be closing for the season this weekend. The City of South Lake Tahoe's seasonal Bijou Golf Course will wrap up their 2018 season on Sunday, October 21.

The last tee time will be at 3:00 p.m.

"On behalf of the City of South Lake Tahoe, we thank you for another great season at the oldest golf course in the Tahoe Basin ~ The Bijou," golf course management said in a press release.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) is pleased to announce that Danelle D. Harrison was selected as the new Deputy Forest Supervisor for the Lake Tahoe Basin. Harrison arrived at the LTBMU a few weeks ago and comes to us from the Kaibab National Forest in Arizona, where she served as the District Ranger for both the Williams and Tusayan Ranger Districts since 2014.

Let the TRTA and our dear friends at the Sugar Pine Foundation take you on a guided hike through groves of interesting trees. The hike will meet at the Kingsbury South Trailhead (Heavenly’s Stagecoach Lodge) and hike south for a little over 3 miles. The Tahoe Institute for Natural Science and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association invite you to spend a Friday morning combining art and nature on a guided hike to Picnic Rock. Along the trail, participants will dive into wildflower exploration, while stopping frequently to investigate the colorful jewels that grow from Tahoe's soils. We will have tea on top of picnic rock as TINS naturalist, Sarah Hockensmith will lead a brief sketching workshop to invite an artistic nature experience while discovering flower patterns and details you may not otherwise notice.

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

This overnight backpacking 101 course is designed for backcountry enthusiasts eager to learn how to upgrade their wilderness experience by learning how to backpack. Join us for this weekend experience to learn all kinds of backpacking tips and tricks, including dressing for success in the backcountry, how to pack a backpack, choosing gear, navigation, Leave No Trace wilderness ethics, campsite selection, backcountry cooking, and bear safety.

On Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., the Sugar Pine Foundation will co-host a Tahoe yellow cress (TYC) planting with the Tahoe yellow cress Adaptive Management Working Group at Baldwin Beach, which is National Forest System land managed by the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU). In addition, the LTBMU will host a TYC information booth at the Native Species Festival on June 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center.

The TRTA is teaming up with local SLT retail stores, Dog Dog Cat and Sports LTD, and local dog trainer, Sandy Mathiesen for this fur-friendly two-mile hike in scenic Van Sickle Bi-State Park on June 16 starting at 9:00 a.m.

This is a great opportunity to learn new canine gear and techniques for a more trail-ready companion, learn how you can support better trail dog behavior, and meet other trail-loving dog owners.

Chautauquan Tom Lorentzen will portray American author John Steinbeck at 6:30 pm, followed by stargazing with the Astronomical Society of Nevada at 9:00 pm, on Wednesday, June 13 at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park.

John Steinbeck was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1962. Among his classic works are The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden and Of Mice and Men. The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of his death. Although most recognized for his fiction, Steinbeck also wrote non-fiction.

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association (TRTA) and partners, the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association and US Forest Service, are organizing a morning community trailhead cleanup on Saturday, June 2 at 9:00 a.m.

Celebrate National Trails Day, the nation’s largest gathering of trails by volunteering cleaning up the South Shore. Volunteers are needed to help remove graffiti off of massive granite boulders and remove garbage on a trail connector into Van Sickle Bi-State Park.

Every year for two weeks, instead of driving, Lake Tahoe residents and visitors ride their bikes to work, school, and for fun. Schools, offices, neighbors, friends and individuals can all join in the challenge by logging all trips done on a bike, no matter the distance.

Just by participating in the Tahoe Bike Challenge people will be automatically eligible to win fabulous prizes and cool swag! Two categories to win: Most Total Trips & Most Trips (from June 1-14) and top riders will receive a limited-edition Tahoe Bike Challenge T-shirt.

Something in the Wind, a free kite flying event, will take place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20, 2018.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The historic Tahoe Trout Farm in South Lake Tahoe will open for the 2018 season on May 1.

For over 70 years the trout farm has been providing families with the experience of fishing in their ponds and catching their dinner, or lots of dinners, as there is no limit to the number of fish caught.
