10th annual New Year's Day plunge into Lake Tahoe

For the tenth consecutive year, a group of friends have jumped into Lake Tahoe to celebrate the New Year, rain, snow or shine.

What started as a group of five South Lake Tahoe friends jumping in to the lake in 2009 has grown, and to celebrate 2018, 70 took the plunge at Camp Richardson.

According to Kelly Sheehan, all of the plungers agreed that this year the weather was practically balmy.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows official training site for U.S. Ski & Snowboard team

Five ski resorts in the United States are official training sites for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard team, and now for the next five years Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is one of them. They join Mammoth Mountain in California, Deer Valley in Utah, Copper Mountain in Colorado and Timberline Lodge in Oregon. In addition to being an Official Training Site for the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows is a U.S. Ski & Snowboard High Performance Center and U.S. Ski & Snowboard Development Site.

South Tahoe High's McCallan Castles signs to play for Cal Bears

There will be a lot more Cal football fans in South Lake Tahoe over the next four years after McCallan Castles signed his letter of intent to play for Coach Wilcox and the University of California Bears Wednesday.

The highly recruited South Tahoe High School (STHS) senior had 18 Division 1 schools trying to get him to sign with them. He narrowed the list down to Utah, Washington State, Duke and Cal before making the decision, something that was easy the moment he stepped onto the Berkeley campus.

South Lake Tahoe company producing big air jump for SnowGlobe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. – Over a dozen local, regional and pro skiers and snowboarders will take part in SnowGlobe Big Air, a jump at the scene of the three-day musical festival in South Lake Tahoe.

Reigning Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson has always had success at Dew Tour events, and her Saturday second-place finish in the women’s slopestyle snowboarding final in Breckenridge, Colorado, got her something much more than another medal.

As the top American woman on the podium, Anderson qualified for her second Olympic Winter Games and earned the chance to defend her title in PyeongChang in February. She will also be able to add a medal in another event as all slopestyle riders will also compete in big air as it makes its Olympic debut.

Sierra-at-Tahoe opens for the season Saturday, Northstar opened today

Sierra-at-Tahoe is the latest Lake Tahoe area ski resort to open for the 2017/18 winter season. The slopes open on December 2, 2017 with limited terrain.

Grandview Express and Easy Rider Express will give skiers and riders access to 11 trails and two terrain parks. Early season conditions are present throughout the mountain and guests are asked to obey all signs and closures.

Nationally ranked LTCC women's soccer playoff game canceled

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) soccer fans will have to wait a few more days to watch their Lady Coyotes in the playoffs. Their first round opponent, the Solano Falcons, had to forfeit Saturday's game due to a lack of players.

The forfeit automatically gives them a first round win.

North Lake Tahoe students get indoor snowboarding lesson from Olympian

LAKE TAHOE - In an ongoing effort to make snowboarding accessible to every kid, Burton Learn to Ride, Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows hosted local kids Wednesday, November 8 for an hour of indoor snowboarding with video instruction from Olympic halfpipe snowboarding champion Kelly Clark, Burton’s Jeff Boliba and instructors from Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows.

Signing Day for South Tahoe High athlete

Hard work does pay off, just ask South Tahoe High Senior McKenna Brewer.

The six-foot tall volleyball player from South Lake Tahoe is now headed to the next level and will be playing for Sonoma State next fall.

"I'm so excited," said McKenna as she signed a letter of intent to be the newest Sonoma Seawolf at the high school Thursday. Besides playing volleyball she will also be studying nursing.

McKenna started playing volleyball in seventh grade and hasn't looked back.

It's just 100 days until the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and United Airlines has announced their lineup of Team USA athletes who will represent them in PyeongChang, South Korea.

"New Spirit of United" is their campaign as the US Olympic Committee's official airline.

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe opens for two days of skiing and riding

Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe will offer a little tease of skiing and snowboarding as they open for two days, Friday, October 27 and Saturday, October 28. They are the first Lake Tahoe area resort to open this season.

There will be limited terrain available for skiing and snowboarding. Mt. Rose will offer access to one beginner ski trail accessed by the Wizard chairlift from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. both days. Lift tickets will be available for $20 for guests ages 16+, and $10 for children ages 15 and under.

Amgen Tour of California men's and women's stages return to South Lake Tahoe

Good news for South Lake Tahoe as the Amgen Tour of California has announced their 2018 race schedule. A favored site for the women’s race, South Lake Tahoe will once again host the men for the Stage 6 finish and welcome back the women for the fourth year in a row on May 18. 2018.

South Lake Tahoe hockey games to raise funds for Santa Rosa fire victims

The Santa Rosa Flyers, the amateur youth hockey teams based at Snoopy's Ice in Santa Rosa, Calif., will be in South Lake Tahoe this weekend for season games against South Tahoe Amateur Hockey Association's Tahoe Grizzlies. Thirteen families from the Santa Rosa hockey organization lost their homes in the recent wildfires.

In March of 2014, the South Lake Tahoe community rallied behind its native son, Ryan Wallace, and raised $25,000 to get him a new prosthetic leg.

National Brotherhood of Skiers to hold next summit at Squaw Valley

The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) has selected Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows to host its next NBS Black Summit. The Summit serves as both the organization’s annual gathering of members and largest fundraiser. More than 800 NBS members and 300 guests from throughout the US and beyond are expected to attend the annual event. The week-long event will run March 3-10, 2018.

Derek Lowe and Mardy Fish early leaders at American Century Championship

Day one of the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe is in the book, and former MLB All-Star pitcher Derek Lowe is in the lead. In round one, Lowe scored a 25 in the modified Stableford scoring format.

New apps for those attending American Century Championship

The 28th annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament is launching a new app that will enable users to follow players live throughout this week, July 11-16.

The free app is available for both iPhones and androids and called "American Century Championship."

What started out twelve years ago as five friends in Lake Tahoe for a bachelor's party and a day of fun at American Century Championships (ACC) has morphed into an iconic event that has taken on a life of its own at Edgewood Tahoe's 7th hole.

“It's like Christmas and New Years on one day,“ explained one of the original five, John Parillo in describing the atmosphere at the hole on Thursdays of the tournament (the Celebrity Pro-Am day).

South Lake Tahoe soccer team hosts German team

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Madrid girls soccer team took their talents to the international stage as they hosted a team who traveled to the South Shore from Germany.

"What an amazing game," said Tahoe parent Jeanna Rangel. "Great sportsmanship. No shoving or pushing. Just straight fun. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for both teams!"

The match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Rangel said Tahoe player Ava Campbell had a few opportunities to score, but the ball just didn't make it into the goal.

Popular Rock Tahoe Half Marathon returns for 3rd year

Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA) is bringing the third annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon to Lake Tahoe on June 17, 2017. 2,000 runners are expected for the event that takes participants from Spooner Summit to Stateline along Highway 50, past some of the best scenery around.

Over 3,000 family members and friends are expected to join the runners in town for the unique "Run, Rock and Recover" event.

STHS junior commits to play football at Cal Berkeley

South Tahoe High's standout tight end McCallan Castles has committed to going to UC Berkeley, and he's just a junior.

Castles received dozens of offers from other top schools during the year but after a visit to Berkeley on Saturday he decided to become a Bear in the fall of 2018. He had been recruited from Utah, Colorado State, University of Colorado, Boise State, Oregon State, Arizona State, San Diego State, Washington State, Duke and many others. He told South Tahoe Now recently that he wanted to stay on the west coast and he got his wish.

Newly-retired quarterback Tony Romo an early favorite to win in Lake Tahoe

Tony Romo returns to Lake Tahoe for the 28th annual American Century Championship golf tournament, his first since 2012.

The newly-retired quarterback from the Dallas Cowboys is an early favorite at the sports book, sharing the 3 to 1 odds of winning with two-time defending champ Mark Mulder. Romo has yet to win, but now that training camp doesn't start at the conclusion of the tournament, who knows what can happen this year?

Another year of swimming for high school is over, and South Tahoe Vikings girls and boys teams are returning from the NIAA State Finals with some medals. Overall, the girls team are seventh in the state, and the boys are sixth. Boulder City High School had huge wins for both teams, coming in first for both boys and girls.

El Dorado County cyclist wins 7th stage of Amgen

After cycling for seven days and 583 miles across California, Team LottoNL-Jumbo’s George Bennett (NZL) claimed the 2017 Amgen Tour of California race championship today in Pasadena with an overall time of 22 hours, 54 minutes and 38 seconds at America’s largest professional cycling stage race.

South Tahoe and Whittell Highs each with three 1st place finishes so far at State

Local athletes will be coming home from the 2017 NIAA State Track and Field Championships in Southern Nevada with medals around their necks.

Eleven STHS Viking swimmers headed to State

The South Tahoe Vikings Swim Team has had a successful year and eleven of the school's swimmers will head to the Nevada State swim competition on May 20 at the Carson Aquatic Swim Center.

During the 3-A Northern Regionals on May 12-13, 24 Viking swimmers qualified to compete, and both the boys and girls teams came in second overall out of eight teams in the region.

On Sunday the four-stage Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM concluded with Boels-Dolmans’ 2016 Olympic Games road race gold medalist Anna van der Breggen (NED) taking the overall win. Van der Breggen rode into the final race day one second behind UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling’s Katie Hall (Saratoga, Calif.) and earned valuable Sprint points during today’s Sacramento circuit race to take the overall race victory by one second. Today’s result also keeps Van der Breggen at the top of the UCI world rankings.

Coryn Rivera takes Stage 3 of Amgen women's race; Hall keeps yellow jersey

Katie Hall, the cyclist who won Amgen Stage 2 in South Lake Tahoe. retained the leader jersey after Stage 3 on Saturday which took racers 73.3 miles from Elk Grove to Sacramento. Hall, who races for UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team, placed 17 in Stage 3.

The winner was American Coryn Rivera who races for Team Sunweb from the Netherlands.

American Katie Hall wins Stage 2 of Amgen women's race in Lake Tahoe

The winner of Stage 2 of the 2017 Amgen Breakaway From Heart Disesase Women's Race Empowered with SRAM race in South Lake Tahoe was decided on the last uphill climb of the day on Ski Run Blvd, the last kilometer of a long and hilly, 67.1 mile long race.

Katie Hall of the United States crossed the finish line first, edging Dutch cyclist Anna van der Breggen by 21 seconds.

Jack Wagner returning to Lake Tahoe for American Century Golf Championship

Famed actor and two-time American Century Championship winner Jack Wagner will compete for another victory in Lake Tahoe along with an impressive list of fellow movie and TV personalities adding star power to the field of active professional and retired athletes and Hall of Famers.

Also in the competition from Hollywood this summer are John O’Hurley, Kevin Nealon, Brian Baumgartner, Bruce McGill, Alfonso Ribeiro, Oliver Hudson and Rob Riggle.

"Super Fan" Ruby Isaac covering Amgen for Specialized Bicycles

Nine-year-old bike enthusiast Ruby Issac from Kettering, UK has been making the most of her role as "race reporter" for Specialized Bicycles at Amgen Tour of California. She won a contest to come to California with her family to be the official media person for the company during the races.

When the women's teams were presented at Harrah's Tahoe Wednesday evening, Ruby was right there with the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team out of Holland.

When Anna van der Breggen of the team stepped onto the stage as the Stage 1 second-place finisher on Thursday, Ruby was there.

Megan Guarnier wins Stage 1 of Amgen's women's race in South Lake Tahoe

One doesn't have to be a fan of professional cycling to enjoy the first two stages of the Amgen Breakwaway From Heart Disesase Women's Race Empowered with SRAM in South Lake Tahoe. People lined the streets Thursday as racers went on a trip around the lake with both the start and finish lines at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and the same is expected on Friday.

American Megan Guarnier won stage 1 with a time of 3 hours, 3 minutes and 48 seconds to make the 117 km (72.7 mile) trip. The former Bay Area resident is on the Boels-Dolmans Cycling Team out of Holland.

Professional cyclists start arriving in Lake Tahoe for two stages of Amgen

Tyler and Cheryl Cannon, owners of Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, opened their doors Tuesday to two of the cycling teams in town for two stages of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM on May 11-12.

DROPS and United Healthcare (UHC) were there not only to enjoy the food Sprouts is known for, but to spend time with media and sharing their stories two days before race time.

Pro golfer Paige Spiranac to play at American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

Breakthrough professional golfer and personality Paige Spiranac will be in Lake Tahoe for the 28th annual American Century Championship (ACC) celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe July 14-16, 2017.

The 24-year-old college golf standout at San Diego State and social media sensation produced a win on the developmental Cactus Tour in 2016 and will test her skills against the competitive celebrity field as she continues to pursue her professional career in golf and modeling.

U16 girls from South Lake Tahoe win first place in Carson City Comstock Tournament

Eighteen girls from South Lake Tahoe came home from the Carson City Comstock Tournament victorious after winning the U16 division.

Pro soccer team Reno 1868 FC to play LTCC in exhibition game Tuesday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif.— Tuesday will be a historical night of soccer at Lake Tahoe Community College as the new professional soccer team, Reno 1868 FC, heads to the south shore to play an exhibition game against the college's men's soccer team. This will be the first professional soccer team to ever play in Tahoe.

On April 25, At 7:00 p.m. the teams will play under the lights at the LTCC home field. Admission is free and open to the public. Reno 1868 FC will sign autographs following the game.

New NFL contingent to play at American Century Golf Championship in Lake Tahoe

Charles Woodson, Travis Kelce, Doug Pederson, Mike Zimmer and Adam Thielen will make up the NFL contingent of first time competitors at the annual American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood in Lake Tahoe July 14-16.

This is the 28th year the 54-hole tournament has been on the South Shore, offering a purse of $600,000 while also raising money for local and national charities.

History is made with two Lake Tahoe Grizzlies teams taking state titles

Two South Lake Tahoe hockey teams went to San Jose to compete in the 2017 California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) State Championships, and both came home with a division title.

The Lake Tahoe Grizzlies Pee Wee A and Bantam B hockey teams won their respective divisions during the tournament at Sharks Ice March 31 to April 2.

This is the first time in CAHA history where two teams from one hockey club took home the gold in the same year.

South Tahoe Grizzlies win Norcal title, now headed to state championships

The South Tahoe Grizzlies Bantam B team defeated Stockton 3-1 in Oakland earlier this month to win the NorCal Bantam B Division title, giving them entry into the California Amateur Hockey Association State Championship in San Jose March 31 and April 2.

The South Lake Tahoe team attracts top players from around the area, all playing under Coach Ken Wood and Assistant Coach Gary Grampie.

53rd annual DeCelle Memorial Lake Tahoe Relay coming this June

On Saturday, June 10, 2017, runners will once again run counter-clockwise around Lake Tahoe during the 53rd annual DeCelle Memorial Lake Tahoe Relay. Considered to be the oldest relay race in the country, the Lake Tahoe Relay began as a New Year's gag by a group of college runners in 1959, grew into a tribute to a beloved son, and has evolved over decades as a family's labor of love. With altitudes up to 6,500 ft. on the 72-mile course around scenic Lake Tahoe, this race is as fun as it is challenging.
