NORDEN, Calif. - Sugar Bowl Ski Team & Academy (SBSTA) student-athletes topped the podium in all three U18 Nordic events this past weekend at the Western Canada Cup #1 and #2 races at Sovereign Lake Nordic Center in Vernon, British Columbia.

South Tahoe High Girls Basketball team wins three-game tournament in Rocklin

The South Tahoe High Varsity Girls Basketball team traveled to Rocklin this weekend for a three-game tournament and came home undefeated and with top honors.

The well-rounded young team has three seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and one freshman. They are coached by Mike Neiger and Cheryl Vanos Embry.

On Friday, the Vikings played Alpha Charter from Elverta, Calif., winning with a score of 39-28 behind Viking Ivy Gonzalez's 13 points.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. − Nobody knew if there would even be a basketball season at South Tahoe Middle School this fall. But the seventh-grade girls pulled off a winning record (5-2) and a third-place finish in the Tah-Neva Basketball Tournament at Eagle Valley Middle School in Carson City.

Free hockey nights in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Free Hockey Night will be held at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena Fridays in August from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. They will be held on August 6, 13 and 20.

All ages are invited to the free events to learn more about both youth and adult hockey opportunities on the South Shore.

There will be on-ice and off-ice fun skills games and refreshments. Coaches and program administrators will be on hand to answer questions and provide information about the adult league, youth and high school opportunities, as well as learn to play.

Over 700 kids signed up for South Lake Tahoe AYSO

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The board of South Lake Tahoe AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) is thanking the community for their support of the program. There are over 700 kids from ages 3-17 signed up to play soccer this fall.

Coach Administrator Kelly Meyer said they've never had enough volunteers step up to coach the kids this early, saying it is a great reflection of the community and the unity in South Lake Tahoe.

40th anniversary of Death Ride Saturday, expect some road closures

The famous Cycling Tour of the California Alps, also known as the Death Ride, returns this year after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic. Not for the faint of heart, as many as 2,500 cyclists from around the world will participate in the endurance event by covering over 103 miles, six highly categorized climbs, and over 14,000 feet of vertical climbing over three mountain passes. And all of this will have in just one day, Saturday, July 17.

Two South Tahoe Babe Ruth teams head to regional finals, looking for community support

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Two of the South Tahoe Babe Ruth teams have done it again - heading the the U.S. Regional finals!

Both the 13-15 year-old and 16-18 year-old teams won the Nevada State All-Star tournament and have qualified to travel to Bakersfield July 25 – July 30, 2021 to face the other seven teams in Regionals (there are eight regions in the country). Their opponents include the Northern, Central and Southern California champs, Arizona and Utah's North and South winners.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Some familiar names from the world of sports and entertainment are on top of the leader board after round two of the American Century Championship at Lake Tahoe. Former pitcher John Smoltz eagled the 18th hold to take the lead at Edgewood Tahoe after a 26-point second round for a total of 51 points. He’s looking for his first win in 11 tries at the American Century Championship.

Curry family having fun playing golf together at Lake Tahoe this week

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - The Curry family is in Lake Tahoe to play in the 32nd annual American Century Championship. Dad Dell, and sons Steph and Seth played at Edgewood Thursday and took time at the end of the day to meet with the media.

A large group of San Francisco Warrior fans followed the "Curry Boys" during their round.

"The Bay is awesome. Fan base is awesome. It’s a great place to play and great place to live," said Steph Curry.

Defending champ Mardy Fish looking forward to having fans back at the American Century Championship

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - More of the invited celebrities for the 32nd American Century Championship have arrived, and hit the course at Edgewood Tahoe Wednesday. Many were paired with guests from Harrahs and Harvey's.

Thursday will be the Pro/Am with players paired again with amateurs from the public, or other groups of celebrities.

Retired professional tennis player, and Olympic silver medalist, Mardy Fish won the tournament in 2020, and is back in Tahoe to try for a repeat performance.

South Lake Tahoe teen named to Golden State Elite Hockey 15AAA team

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 15-year-old South Lake Tahoe boy is moving up the ranks of hockey as he sets off on a new adventure as one of two goaltenders named to the Golden State Elite 15AAA team.

Brooks Smyrski was recently invited to a prospects camp for the Golden State Elite hockey club. After that camp, Brooks was invited to try out for the upcoming year's 15AAA team. He was then offered a position on the team.

Two South Tahoe High seniors commit to playing college football

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With Friday's Senior Night on the field they've called home for the last four years, Jake Tarwater and Mason Hage know it won't be their last snap. Both players have committed to colleges to continue their school and football careers this fall.

Quarterback Tarwater is heading to Truman State, a Division II school in Missouri, while teammate Hage, a wide receiver, is heading to Ohio to the University of Mount Union, a Division III school.

Tarwater has been able to tour the Kirksville campus and meet his future Bulldogs teammates.

Signups underway for High Sierra Softball

Registration is now open for the High Sierra Softball League. Learn skills, make friends, get outside and be part of a team! Everyone plays!

The league is open to all players ages 5-16, first-time players as well as seasoned veterans. Minis ages 5-7, Farm ages 7-10, Minors ages 10-12, and Majors ages 12-16.

Online registration opened on March 9 and is underway now and open until April 11. Late registration is April 12-18. The program runs from May 1 to June 20, 2021.

South Tahoe High Girls Soccer now 3-0; beats Hug at first home game

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow cleared in time for the South Tahoe High School (STHS) Lady Vikings to win both their Varsity and Junior Varsity soccer games Friday, the second week for both teams to come out on top.

The STHS JV played a game against North Tahoe and won 2-0. Giulia Lancellotti scored a goal from a direct kick, and Olivia Kwachak Hall scored off a steal. Molly Adams and her backline earned their first shutout, said Coach Julia Russell.

Varsity took on Hug at their first home game of the modified season.

The South Tahoe National Little League is trying to put together a 2021 season, and since Spring is less than two months away, it's time to sign up to play.

Children eligible to play must be born between September 1, 2008 and December 31, 2016.

South Tahoe Middle School wraps up unique Nordic ski season

The South Tahoe Middle School Nordic Ski Team is wrapping up a modified season next week with races on Wednesday and Thursday.

The boys and girls on the team started practicing at the beginning of December with in-person, socially distanced practice two days a week and virtual practice another two days a week. Coaches kept the alphabetical cohorts together.

Jamie Anderson wins two golds at X Games in Aspen

South Lake Tahoe native and Olympic gold medalist Jamie Anderson entered the 2021 X Games in Aspen as the most decorated female in the history of the games, and has now tied Shaun White with the most gold medals in Slopestyle at seven.

The 30-year-old Anderson, who grew up in Meyers and called Sierra-at-Tahoe her home mountain, won gold in the Jeep Women's Snowboard Slopestyle on Thursday and Pacifico Women's Snowboard Big Air on Sunday. These were her 18th and 19th medals at the annual ski and snowboard competition, her 7th and 8th gold medals.

Nordic Center at Lake Tahoe Community College open for classic and skate ski

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With all of the fresh snow on the ground, the timing is perfect for the opening of the Lake Tahoe Community College's (LTCC) Nordic Center. Five to seven kilometers of trails will be maintained and groomed on a regular basis 2-3 times per week for the season, offering views of the forest along with Freel and Jobs Sister peaks.

Two NHL outdoor games planned for Edgewood Tahoe in February

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There will be two National Hockey League (NHL) games held outdoors at a new rink at Edgewood Tahoe in February, according to a report today on Sports Net Canada.

The outdoor games will be between the Las Vegas Knights and Colorado Avalanche on February 20 and the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers on February 21.

Kirkwood opens for 2020/21 season, Heavenly expands to Nevada side

High school sports news - NIAA moves football and soccer to spring

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) has announced their high school sports schedule for members in their area, including South Tahoe and Truckee High Schools.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty of school reopening schedules, traditional fall sports have moved to Spring 2021. Adjustments to the schedules were voted on by the NIAA Legislative Commission which is comprised of the superintendents of each school in the league.

This year’s event is being played without fans at the Edgewood Course due to the coronavirus pandemic, creating a unique experience for players in the popular celebrity tournament that typically attracts large galleries.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Mardy Fish won the 31st American Century Championship (ACC) at Edgewood Tahoe on Sunday with a three-round total of 76 in the Stableford scoring system used at the popular celebrity golf tournament.

Fish followed up his record round on Saturday with a rather ordinary 21-point effort Sunday, but it was enough to claim his first title at Tahoe. He's had five top-five finishes at Edgewood in six previous appearances in the ACC.

Kyle Williams, former Pro Bowl defensive tackle for the Buffalo Bills, came into the clubhouse with a 25 in the modified Stableford scoring system used at the tournament.

46th annual Ponderosa Ridge Run on 4th of July

Austin Angell’s 46th annual Ponderosa Ridge Run will be held Saturday, July 4, 2020, at 10:00 a.m.

The popular event will start at the Spooner Summit Maintenance Station located near the intersection of US50/SR28 on the east side of the summit. The 9.5-mile hilly course is on a non-paved fire road featuring a 2,000-foot elevation gain in the first four miles with scenic views along the Tahoe Rim Trail, and a downhill finish near the end of North Benjamin off Kingsbury Grade (SR207).

Transportation is not provided back to the start area.

Now its time to start the new season and tryouts are scheduled for March 22 and 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Depending on weather, tryouts will be held at Todd Fields or South Tahoe High School.

Babe Ruth is a recreational baseball league serving players born on or before August 31, 2007 and have aged out of Little League. Everyone plays.

South Tahoe Little League holds final registration day, junior umpire training and clinics Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - This is a big weekend for South Tahoe Little League.

On Sunday, March 1, it is AAA and Majors Warm-Up Clinic in the South Tahoe High School Gym. Go "knock off some rust" before player evaluations on March 15 and 22 (reserve time for those two dates here).

The AAA players clinic will run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and Majors will hold theirs from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

26th annual Banked Slalom at Kirkwood this weekend

The 26th annual Banked Slalom hosted by Kirkwood Mountain Resort and driven by GMC returns on Saturday and Sunday, February 22-23. The race takes place in Kirkwood’s Snow Snake Gully, known for its challenging natural terrain.

Race operations will once again be executed by KSEF.

Day one of the event is designed for kids and families. Race categories include 8 & under, 9-12, 13-15, 16-19 and Family category, which combines the time of parent and child.

Oregon Ducks win back-to-back Pac-8 Hockey Championships in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was a full weekend of action on the ice in South Lake Tahoe as the Ice Arena was home to the Pac-8 Men's Hockey Championship. The final game put the #1 and #2 seeds from the north, the University of Oregon and Boise State, together to fight it out for the trophy.

For the second consecutive year, and for the fifth time, the Oregon Ducks will be taking home the championship title back to Eugene. They blanked the Boise State Broncos 3-0.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The University of Oregon is looking for a repeat as champions when they face Boise State on Sunday at noon for the Pac-8 Men's Ice Hockey Championship at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Area.

The top four teams from both the North and South Divisions have been in town for the three-day tournament. In the North Division, Oregon (11-3) and Boise State (9-3-2) secured the top two spots in the division. The Eastern Washington Eagles (8-5-1) were the third seed and Western Washington (7-7) was the fourth and final seed.

Ski With a Ranger program starts at Heavenly Mountain Resort

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites the public to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort this winter, starting on Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours will begin each Friday at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

2020 Snowshoe Cocktail Race series begins at Camp Richardson

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Snowshoe Cocktail Race series at Camp Richardson begins on January 18, with the second and third races on Feb. 15 and Mar. 21.

The high stepping fun returns as amateur contestants strap on snowshoes and try their luck in the resort’s annual race. This three-part series held on the beach in front of the Beacon Bar and Grill tests participants’ balance, speed, and agility as racers, cocktail trays in hand, navigate through obstacles, and up and down the beach.
