SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Tahoe Public Utility District (STPUD) Board of Directors did not have to look far for their next general manager. At their meeting Thursday they appointed Paul Hughes, the District's chief financial officer.

With over 28 years in the public sector, Hughes brings a strong financial background to the position.

“The Board interviewed great candidates and unanimously selected Paul Hughes,” said STPUD Board President David Peterson. “He is an outstanding leader, outstanding fiscal manager, and outstanding problem solver.”

UPDATE: The demonstration of the BEBOT has been moved to Thursday, August 24 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Conolley Beach, South Lake Tahoe behind the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The City of South Lake Tahoe is partnering with the Beach Retreat, ECO-CLEAN Solutions, and the League to Save Lake Tahoe to deploy the beach-cleaning robot BEBOT on the shores of Lake Tahoe. BEBOT, short for “beach robot,” will be performing a full beach cleaning at Conolley Beach on Monday, August 21.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. -Help local veterans raise funds for a new roof at the Raise The Roof fundraiser at the American Legion Post 795 on Saturday, August 26 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The roof needs immediate attention and the price tag is high so proceeds will go towards fixing the roof along with other repairs and upgrades.

There will be food (served from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.), music, and activities including horseshoes, corn hole, darts, billiards, kids' games, and more.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. - Thanks to the generosity of its donors, the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation has announced the recipients of almost $300,000 they granted to nonprofit organizations serving the Lake Tahoe basin through its Community Fund.

TRUCKEE, Calif. — The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is hosting the much-anticipated grand opening of their new Thrift Store, Thrifty Tails Boutique, this Saturday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. HSTT is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of pets through adoption, community spay/neuter, and humane education programs in South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.

Arthur Muskovitz was born on February 27, 1936 in San Francisco, California, and passed away on August 1, 2023, in South Lake Tahoe at the age of 87.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - In addition to year-round restricted areas, enhanced fire restrictions are now in effect on National Forest lands in the Lake Tahoe Basin and will remain in effect through the end of December 2023, or until rescinded. Enhanced fire restrictions mean wood and charcoal fires are now prohibited in Blackwood Canyon, Luther Pass, and Watson Lake campgrounds. Portable stoves are allowed with a valid permit.

This summer series evening program features one of the favorite presentations and offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with a few of Tahoe’s flying mammals.

On Friday, August 18, 2023, members of the California Highway Patrol South Lake Tahoe office, Alpine County Sheriff, and community members will come together in an informal, neutral space to discuss community issues, have coffee, and build relationships.

We have moved into the hustle and bustle of a busy summer, road construction, and traffic issues. The City’s Police Department is tasked with the enforcement of traffic laws within the City limits. This includes patrol officers conducting traffic enforcement, officers working extra overtime patrols utilizing grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety, and one traffic officer dedicated to traffic enforcement.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It is still beach and hiking weather and the calendar says it is summer, but Vail Resorts is sharing its opening dates at Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort have announced their planned opening dates for the upcoming 2023-2024 ski and ride season. Heavenly and Northstar will target opening on Friday, November 17, and Kirkwood will target Friday, December 1.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - During the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) board meeting on August 10, staff and the trustees heard several items from the recent two-day board retreat to positive changes to math instruction at Sierra House Elementary.

NORDEN, Calif. - Sugar Bowl Resort announced Tuesday that Mike Jankowski has been named as its new Executive Director of Sport. Jankowski, an elite performance professional with 20 years of Olympic sport organization experience, has coached U.S. Olympic Ski and Snowboard teams since 2003. In his new role, he will lead Sugar Bowl’s ski and snowboard school, high-level sport education, Nordic, events, and summer experiences to deliver high-quality experiences and world-class events.

Making it the largest tournament in its 39 years, 289 players from seven states recently participated in the annual Hersh Herschman Memorial Tahoe Classic at Zephyr Cove Park. The four-day annual event ended on August 6 bringing even more people to our area for the fun tennis competition.

The tournament is the biggest fundraiser for the Zephyr Cove Tennis Club Foundation (ZCTCF). The money raised from the event, including a silent auction and raffle, will help to continue to provide the only organized recreational tennis, with a growing kids program, on the South Shore.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A retirement bin was placed at Grocery Outlet this week in South Lake Tahoe as a joint project between the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the American Legion Post 795.

Many people proudly display an American flag at their homes or businesses but what is supposed to be done with the flag when it becomes worn and in poor condition? It should be retired during an official ceremony like the one in South Lake Tahoe at the American Legion's annual Flag Day Ceremony.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There have been two major crashes at the intersection of US50 and SR28 on Spooner Summit in recent weeks, one of those crashes claiming the life of a 61-year-old man from Washington. Many are calling for a safer intersection in order to prevent more tragic crashes and further loss of life.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - There have been Secret Service personnel on the south and east shore of Lake Tahoe this week, all in preparation for President Joe Biden's arrival on Friday. The White House confirmed Monday that the President will arrive on August 18 and is scheduled to depart Thursday, August 24.

It has not been disclosed if the visit is for a vacation, business, or for a fundraising event. As of Monday, there are no public events scheduled.
