Avalanche at Palisades Tahoe - One dead and one injured

THURSDAY UPDATE: The man killed in the Palisades Tahoe avalanche has been identified as Kenneth Kidd, 66. He lived in both Point Reyes and in the Truckee area,

UPDATE 4:30PM: The Placer County Sheriff's Office held a press conference this afternoon. There was no new information though they did say the search had ended as no other people were known to be in the area. They said a total of four people were caught in the avalanche, two were the previously mentioned deceased and injured, and the other two were assisted and able to get out.

UPDATE 2:15PM: The avalanche this morning at Palisades Tahoe caused one fatality and one injury, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

Olympic Valley Fire Department responded to Palisades Tahoe for word of an avalanche in the ski area. they contacted ski patrol, who confirmed an avalanche in the GS Bowl of KT 22, and began recruiting allied agencies and pooling resources in support of Palisades Ski Patrol.

No further missing persons have been reported. More than 100 Palisades personnel participated in a beacon search, and two probe lines have been completed.

Placer County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Olympic Valley Fire, Palisades Tahoe, Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue were activated along with allied agency partners and assets from the west side.

PCSO is investigating the coroner’s case.

the avalanche debris field is approximately 150 feet wide, 450 feet long and 10 feet deep.

This was the first day of operations for the season at that lift.

TAHOE CITY, Calif. - There was an avalanche Wednesday morning at Palisades Tahoe above the GS gully above KT-22. Both sides of the mountain will be closed for the day.

At approximately 9:30 a.m., the avalanche occurred, according to a Palisades Tahoe report. The resort's patrol and mountain operations teams are performing a search at this time.

As of noon, it is unknown if anyone is missing or what the current status of the search is.
