Several rounds of snow storms in the Lake Tahoe forecast into March

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A cold and stormy period will continue through the end of February and into the beginning of March, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. They say to anticipate several rounds of snow at all elevations, leading to widespread travel difficulties in the Sierra. Periods of enhanced winds will make it feel that much colder. Bundle up and protect vulnerable populations and pets.

The Winter Weather Advisory is in place until 4 a.m. Friday, then a Winter Weather Watch until Saturday, February 25 at 10 a.m.

For the Winter Weather Advisory, snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 2 to 8 inches, except 8 to 15 inches above 7000 feet near and west of Highway 89. Winds gusting as high as 75 mph along Sierra ridgelines with gusts up to 35 mph in the Tahoe Basin. Waves 2 to 4 feet on Lake Tahoe.

For the Winter Storm Watch, heavy snow is possible. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches at lake level and 1 to 2 feet at the crest. Winds could gust as high as 60 mph along Sierra ridgelines.

Ongoing travel impacts are expected for next week in the Sierra, northeastern California, and western Nevada as additional rounds of snow push into the region. NWS Reno says road closures and significant delays are likely for travel through early next week.

Thursday - Snow. High near 22. Breezy, with a south wind of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches is possible.

Thursday Night - Snow. Low around 10. Breezy, with a south wind of around 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. The chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches is possible.

Friday - Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 28. Southeast wind around 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 5 to 9 inches is possible.

Friday Night - Snow likely, mainly before 11 pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 14. East wind around 10 mph. The chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches is possible.

Saturday - A 50 percent chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. East wind around 10 mph. A new snow accumulation of around an inch is possible.

Saturday Night - A 30 percent chance of snow, mainly before 11 pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low of around 15. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.
