Local schools celebrate reading and Dr. Seuss

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904, and to honor the beloved children's author better known as Dr. Seuss, Read Across America is celebrated annually on March 2.

This annual reading motivation and awareness program calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on this day, and schools in South Lake Tahoe joined in with guest readers in the classroom, and some joined in with Dr. Seuss inspired costumes.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Battalion Chief Jim Drennan, California Highway Patrol Officer Ruth Loehr and Comedian and Radio Show Host Howie Nave were among the celebrity readers at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School on Thursday, reading to enthusiastic children.

Loehr read to Mrs. Hembreeā€™s 3rd grade class at the Magnet School. We read Owl Moon by Jane Yolen.

"The kids were great!" said Officer Loehr. "They asked a lot of questions about the book then I allowed them to ask me questions about my job, which they really loved."

Brennan read to second graders as did Nave.

Nave added to his reading of The Lorax with a little impromptu Seuss-like dialog:

You might be thinking, "who's this guy reading to us?
I've never seen him before, was he on the bus?"
My name is Howie yes, I sound like Pooh Bear and if that's not weird you guys like my blue hair?
