Lake Tahoe Unified School District students will not return this school year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Governor Newsom said it was a possibility two weeks ago, California’s schools chief Tony Thurmond recommended the state’s public schools prepare to provide distance learning through the end of their school years on Tuesday, and now today, it became a reality in South Lake Tahoe.

El Dorado County Office of Education (EDCOE) announced they are taking a safety-first approach and immediate action to extend the school facility closures through the end of the school year.

This includes the Lake Tahoe Unified School District which covers South Lake Tahoe and Meyers.

"While we recognize this extension of school facility closures poses challenges and hardship to many families in El Dorado County, the most effective way to slow and disrupt the transmission of this pandemic is by continuing to implement social
distancing practices. We are grateful to community members throughout El Dorado County for their tremendous prevention efforts during this unique and challenging time," said EDCOE in a statement. "We ask for patience and understanding as we are all quickly transitioning into a new way of teaching and learning to meet the health and safety impacts of COVID-19."

"With these unexpected announcements from the governor and state superintendent in the last couple of days, schools will have to rethink the end of school year activities, including graduation," said LTUSD Public Information Officer Shannon Chandler. "We will continue to keep families apprised as that process unfolds."
