Man kills girlfriend, then self, in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. Deputies and SWAT officers from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) were dispatched to a home in a rural area of Somerset on May 2 after a woman called, telling them her daughter had been shot by her boyfriend.

The woman called at 10:15 a.m. from a neighbor's house, and when law enforcement arrived they surrounded a home on Meyer Lane and were able to make contact with the boyfriend, Ulrich Smith, who was inside.

An elementary school located near the home went on lockdown as a precaution.

During the course of conversations and negotiations between EDSO and Smith, they were able to confirm Smith was still armed and he was refusing to exit the home. At about 5:30 p.m., officers heard a gunshot and entered the home. Inside they found Smith deceased with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

They also found Smith's deceased girlfriend Janet Trigg inside the home.

Members of EDSO have worked through the night to complete a thorough investigation. Next-of-kin notifications have been made.
