CHP looking for South Lake Tahoe area Senior Volunteers and Explorers

Volunteers are needed by the California Highway Patrol for two of their programs on the South Shore, Senior Volunteers and Explorers.

The Senior Volunteer Program provides senior adult men and women the opportunity to
volunteer their time to assist CHP employees in the performance of their duties.

This assistance enhances the Department’s ability to provide safety, service, and security for all Californians.

Regardless of prior career path, there are jobs in all areas for senior volunteers. The only requirements are: You must be 55 or older, undergo a background investigation, no felony convictions, be of good moral character, be available to volunteer during office hours, be willing to perform various duties as assigned and do so with minimal supervision.

Some of the tasks seniors do include:

Deploy the radar trailer
Work with local schools
Direct traffic at special events
Assist the front desk officer in serving the public
Answer telephones
Help with office duties
Teach driver safety to seniors in the community
Participate in ride-alongs with CHP officers

CHP Explorers are for young people ages 15-21 who are interested in law enforcement as a career. Participants must have a 2.0 GPA, no drug or alcohol use, have good citizenship and no felony convictions. Organizers say it is a unique and challenging opportunity that allows young men and women to be part of the CHP Department in Meyers, which served the South Shore.

CHP officials say successful completion of the Explorer program will open many doors and will present many opportunities for the youth of tomorrow, especially for an Explorer who is planning to make the CHP a career. Explorers have gone on to attain their college degrees, enter service with the FBI and Secret Service, attend military academies, or move into other law enforcement or public service careers.

For both opportunities, contact the CHP at 530-577-1001 Monday through Friday.
