Children's summer food program starts Wednesday in South Lake Tahoe

The 2018 Bread & Broth 4 Kids Summer Program will once again serve the children in the community with food beginning June 20, thanks to generous donations from the community and Vail Resorts. Food will be available at three South Lake Tahoe locations every Wednesday through August 22.

Every child up to the age of 18 can come alone or with a parent, or legal guardian, to any of the distribution sites listed below. At St. Theresa's Church, children can fill up a bag with fresh fruit, cereals, milk, breakfast and nutrition bars, canned meat and more. At the two school sites, pre-packed bags will be provided. Children are encouraged to bring a backpack or reusable tote bag to carry food home. Note: Food will only be given to parents who are accompanied by their child(ren).

Background

For the past three years, Bread & Broth 4 Kids has provided weekend food backpacks for food insecure children in South Lake Tahoe, serving children at all elementary sites and South Tahoe Middle School. These backpacks contain nutritious, kid-friendly, single-serving meals, fresh produce, and healthy snacks to help support weekend nutritional needs. The program also provides nutritious snacks for high school students who struggle with hunger.

Last summer, after a very generous donation from Rob Katz, CEO of Vail Resorts and his wife Elana Amsterdam, the program expanded to provide food weekly for children during the summer months. Last summer, 1,156 bags of food were handed out to children throughout the South Lake Tahoe community from June-August.

This donation will support the 2018 Summer efforts as well. Vail Resorts owns and operates Heavenly Resort and Kirkwood Mountain, and B&B has partnered with many local employees of both organizations to distribute food to local children. Last summer, Vail employees assisted with the packing, distribution and delivery of food to the elementary sites, and they will continue with that support this summer as well.
