Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe; Red Flag Warning for Western Nevada

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, June 28. Expect winds from the west 15-25 mph with gusts up to 45 mph. Waves on Lake Tahoe will be 2-4 feet. Strongest winds and roughest conditions expected Saturday afternoon and evening, and then again on Sunday.

Small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

There is a Red Flag Warning in effect until Sunday at 11:00 p.m. for the Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Southern Washoe, Western Lyon, and Far Southern Lassen Counties-Southern Sierra Front including Alpine, Northern Mono, Southern Lyon, and Western Mineral Counties-West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County-Lahontan Basin including Churchill and Eastern Mineral Counties.

Gusty winds up to 55 mph are forecast with low humidity resulting in dangerous fire conditions. Ridge gusts up to 70 mph.

A fire started on Peavine Peak five miles north of the UNR campus on Saturday afternoon, quickly leading to evacuations. Called the Poeville Fire, it has burned 550 acres so far and is being fueled by gusty winds. Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reported a delay in an air attack on the fire due to a drone. 250 personnel are fighting the fire.

The Monarch Fire in southern Douglas County 90 percent contained and has burned 2,330 acres.

The Sunday forecast from the National Weather Service in Reno for South Lake Tahoe:

Sunny, with a high near 72. Breezy, with a southwest wind 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Sunday night there is a slight chance of rain before 11 p.m., then a slight chance of showers after 11:00 p.m. Snow level 9900 feet lowering to 8300 feet after midnight. Mostly clear, with a low around 37. Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph becoming northeast 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
