Fishing Report For Northern California, Nevada and Sierra through July 10

Here is this week's fishing report for rivers, lakes and streams in Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra. This report is for July 5 through July 10.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:

Insect hatches have been going strong so the fish are well fed and are enjoying snacking throughout the day.
For the most effective bait, use threaded crawlers on a #6 Gamakastu bait holder. Trolling between 1.5-1.8 feet deep has also gotten great results.
For good size Rainbows, use a 50/50 blend of warm, Pro-Cure Carp Spit and Trophy Trout. It has really been the scent of choice lately. With darker nights coming, along with less feeding at night, the bite should increase.
If you’re looking for Salmon, you don’t have to work too hard for it, they’re everywhere, and they’re a nice size of 14-16 inches!

BISHOP AREA, CALIF:
Jared Smith - Parcher’s Resort (760-873-4177) (sierrasmitty@cebridge.net):
South Lake:
After the wind died down on Monday, action at South Lake returned to a wide open bite for most anglers with limits the rule.
It was surprisingly quiet up at the lake until Thursday when folks started showing up in force to take advantage of the excellent fishing.
The DFG stocked some real quality rainbows this week making for some happy anglers and heavier than average stringers.
Best fish of the week was a 5lb 8oz trophy caught by Mike Goodwin of Glendora, CA on a nightcrawler.
Nightcrawlers seemed to be the best producer for the bait n' wait folks this week but most brightly colored dough baits are working well too. Power Bait in Garlic, Salmon Peach or the new Strike Bait in red were good producers. With fishing as good as it is, bait dunkers should avoid catch and release of gut-hooked fish - the collection of floating dead fish at the dam is evidence of how unsporting this practice is - they may swim away but they're pretty much done for within a day or so.
The jig bite continues to be on fire with the pink/orange, pink/blue sparkle and grasshopper Sierra Slammer jigs doing best.
Anglers reported wide open action jigging on the dam, the Rock Slide, at Roger's cove, and in the channel to the east of the island.
Anglers fishing 2 to 4lb test and working the jigs really slow are doing the best. In the afternoon when the breeze comes up, folks are doing well fishing jigs 5ft or more under a bobber with a small piece of crawler or a mealworm on the jig. Yellow and pink trout worms fished on a size 8 or 10 hook with a size 7 split shot 18" above the worm are also working very well.
Thomas Buoyant and Kastmasters are also working (of course), especially in the few days following DFG stockings.
Not a lot of trolling reports this week but the fish seem to still be up in the water column and despite the warm weather, haven't gone deep yet so trolling spoons and Rapalas on top is still the suggested tactic.
The water level at South Lake dropped about 2 ft vertically this week leaving the launch ramp out of the water. Anglers with really good trailer skills can still get small boats in the water launching off the dirt but it's sketchy at best and most private boaters are out of luck as of now.
No word from SCE as to the latest projections for the lake level going into late July/August.
South Fork Bishop Creek:
Mixed reports from the creek this week with some finding wide open fishing and some folks scratching just a few fish here and there.
Judging by how many yellow Panther Martin with red dots in the 1/16oz size we sold this week, they were definitely working well in the streams.
The creek sections by Willow Campground, Surveyor's meadow, and Table Mountain campground are all good places to try.
Intake II:
Only a few reports came our way this week but  those reports were all great, especially for bait fishing with Power Bait fished off the bottom with a 24 to 36" leader. Nothing of size reported but easy limits.
North Lake:
Wide open action on stocker rainbows reported for both lure and bait fishers.
Trail Report:
If you're looking to get into the backcountry - now is the time. Great weather, open trails, blooming wildflowers and epic scenery everywhere you look. The skeeters are definately around so bring your deet.

BISHOP CREEK, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) ( www.kenssport.com) reports:
The w__d has finally settled down for the most part around here and since it has the reservoir has been fishing excellent!!
There's been some pretty good fly fishing with midges and streamers, the bait fishing from boats has been excellent and there's even been some pretty decent trolling down near the dam with a few nice browns showing up.
Flies to try are mini leeches, matukas, hornbergs, zebra midges, callibaetis, dainty damsel and stillwater nymphs.
For bait go with inflated crawlers, power bait and gulp eggs.
For trolling go with Rapalas, needlefish and thomas bouyants as well as blades and crawlers.

BRIDGEPORT RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
Good. Full to the brim. Clear and getting warmer everyday. With the warmer water comes lots of weeds.
Fishing Conditions:
Good. Weeds are already a problem. Especially at inlets around the lake making midging difficult.
Pull streamers early and switch to midges around mid-day.

CHETCO RIVER, ORE:
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (800-720-ODWF) (www.dfw.state.or.us.com) reports:
Cutthroat trout fishing can be good this time of year, both in the estuary or up river. Anglers are reminded to check regulations before heading out as there are bait restrictions upstream of the estuary.

COMINS LAKE, WHITE PINE COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife ( HYPERLINK "http://www.ndow.org" www.ndow.org) reports:
A few bass have been showing up, but no trout due to the pike infestation.
Pike fishing has also been poor.
There are few if any trout left in the lake also due to the pike infestation.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
The green goo is at it's thickest but the winds move it around and clear water. Red brassies and Stevie's M-80  in 13-15 feet of water.

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) ( HYPERLINK "http://www.thetroutfitter.com" www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
The lake is still fairly high but continuing to drop.
Down about 9 ft from peak.
Water temps are getting up there and over ideal 57F about everywhere,
Algae is on the increase and hasn't affected fishing much yet but it is nasty enough if it blows your way.
Fishing Conditions:
Good to Excellent
The 'McGee Miracle" has started over two weeks early as I predicted and a good number of big fish have started to show up in McGee Bay and Little Hilton but there are still lots more to come in the next week or so I expect.
There are still some fish at Green Banks and Leighton.
The bad news is that the low run-off this year has made for the entire McGee stream channel under the lake being clogged with weeds.
The fish are as close as they can be in 60F water off the channel in about 12-14 ft of water currently but what happens when that water is 65--70F???

CROWLEY LAKE, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Jim and Jeanne of the J & J Grizzly Store (530-832-0270) (www.grizzlystore.portola-ca.com) reports:
Congratulations to the Fishing Derby winners.
The winning fish was 19 inches and 2.2 lbs.
High winds have made fishing rough the last few days. Looks like they will calm down on Tuesday according to the NOAA weather report.
Water temp on Sunday was 61.5 degrees
Lake level is at 78.5% full
Trolling, Dick Nite Copper Red Heads were doing well on Sunday; additionally Needlefish Red Dot Frog, Sockeye Slammer Fire Tiger, Rainbow Runner in Red or Green.
Fish on Sunday were from the top down to about 10 ft.
Earlier in the week down to around 20 ft.
Bait fishing, Power bait in Lemon Twist, Rainbow, Chartreuse or Sherbet, or inflated nightcrawlers.
Eagle Point continues to be good, Mallard and Coot are picking up.
Fly fishing, Suspended Damsels, Woolly Buggers in Olive, Rust, Black or Brown, Copper John, Flash Back Pheasant Tail and Blood Midge have all been doing well. West side from Eagle Point to Freeman have all been reported as productive, morning and late afternoon/evening the best.
Catfish are biting, and Crawdads are being caught.

DAVIS LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has been slow on the lake.
Some days there are a few damsels swimming around, with a few adults in other areas, but really nothing to get the fish going consistently.
Midge hatches were almost non-existent this past week.
Coves south of Camp Five and the North side of Eagle point have been the most active areas.
The water temperature is averaging 60 degrees.
There have been a lot of anglers, but little to no catches.

FALL RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The fishing has been fair to great. The Hex Hatch has continued for the past week. There is notice of minimal weeds in the river which could provide a great autumn “dry fly fishing” season.  Floating lines and leaders tapered to 4X, about 24" of 6X tippet not to mention #16 PMD Dun- that should do it for dry fly fishing.
Keep in mind, potential delays on 299E around Montgomery Creek.

FEATHER RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fishing has become spotty on the river. Fishermen have been coming up with only a few or even no fish for the day, and the fishing pressure remains light. With the water still being so low at Boyd’s and Yuba City, there are a lot of hazards out on the water!

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
With the windy conditions out on the lake, there has been very few good reports. However, using Yellow and Rainbow power bait, nightcrawlers, and Salmon eggs have produced some good size fish that were approximately two pounds, and some that were 16-17 inches long.

HAT CREEK, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500)
(www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Late afternoon to early evening fishing is best bet.
You can find bigger fish looking for stranded, crippled mayflies and caddis.
Suspending a # 16 olive nymph, like a micro-mayfly, under a small indicator or brushy stonefly/salmonfly dry has been working effectively.
During the day, look for a hatch of baetis and PMDs around 12:00 PM.

HEENAN LAKE, CALIF:
The fishing season for Heenan Lake is closed.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Water flow is down a bit to 12 CFS. Caddis hatch is strong from around noon on. CDC caddis or e/c caddis on the surface.  Good PMD hatch and little yellow stones beginning to show. Nymph fishing remains the most productive. WD-40's, flashback pheasant tails, hares ears and scuds.

HOT CREEK, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Water Conditions:
Good. Flows at 28 CFS as of 6/28.
Water is very clear and fairly low when compared to this time last year.
Weeds are growing in now big time.
Fishing Conditions:
Good. Hopper season has arrived!
Fish the far bank and slap it on the water so it makes some noise.
Takes have been very subtle, so try and use the smallest and most sensitive indicator you can use and try to shorten your drifts.
Yarn is usually best when the water is this clear and slow.

HUNEWELL POND, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
The H-Pond is fishing excellent this week! We've had several groups of clients who have had a great time on the pond.
The best flies are still small seal buggers, stillwater nymphs, AP emergers and soft hackles.
Most anglers are getting into 15 t0 30 fish per day.
Give us a call if you want to book some time on the pond!

JIGGS / ZUNINO RESERVOIR, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Unfortunately, Jiggs has dried up.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Try Silver Lake with black or purple woolly buggers on sink tip or full sink lines. Rush Creek is now down to 10 CFS and fishing is good. Try a Royal Wullf, Royal Coachman or a stimulator.
Nymph fish with P.T.'s, San Juan worms and olive hares ears.

JUNE LAKE LOOP, CALIF:
Grant Lake, Gull Lake and June Lake:
To be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

KIRMAN LAKE, CALIF:
Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods Store in Bridgeport (760- 932-7707) (www.kenssport.com) reports:
We've only had a couple reports from Kirman this week and they were pretty good.
Sounds like the fly anglers have been doing pretty good with
small streamers like seal buggers and mini leeches with a soft hackle dropper as well as scud patterns in the shallower water.
Hardware anglers have done well with Thomas bouyants and kastmasters.

KLAMATH RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Hatches of Golden Stones and Salmon flies have come and gone. A lot of smaller 6-12’’ rainbows chasing these big flies.
As the weather warms up expect to find bigger rainbows moving up into the Iron Gate region of the Klamath.
For now, the fishing on the Klamath is focused on the lower sections down near Klamath Glen.

LEE VINING CREEK, CALIF:
It will be planted this week by the California Department of Fish and Game.

LEWISTON LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
With Lewiston Lake, the water is always cold and always clean, which is great for producing great fishing.
Rainbows are coming out anywhere from 14-20 inches! The carpenter ants will fall on the lake surface and trigger aggressive top water feeding. Productive techniques have been retrieving Pheasant Tail Nymphs, or Mercer’s Gidget. You will want to come prepared with ant patterns in case the carpenter ants are out.
Another good technique is suspending #22 Red Zebra Midge or Gidgets under a treated piece of poly yarn.

OROVILLE LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
The Lake is being dropped about 2 ft a day so it’s making the fishing a little more aggressive. The bass have been very active in the morning around the surface. And drop down to 40-50 feet during the day. More reports coming from the main portion of the lake. Jigs and plastic worms are working well. Coho are more around the middle fork area and the main body of the lake 30-65 feet down. White and Pink Hootchies have brought in some fish.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Current water flow is 65 CFS. Water temp up to 64. The river is a bit more cloudy and lower and fishing is slow. Lot's of caddis and PMD's. Fox's Caddis Poopah, Brooks Hot Creek caddis San Juan worms and egg patterns.
Lower Owens River:
Current flow is  503 CFS. Try the Hot Creek.

OWENS RIVER, CALIF:
Kent of The Trout Fly and Troutfitter (760-934-2517) (www.thetroutfitter.com) reports:
Upper Owens River:
Water Conditions:
Good. As of 6/28 the flows are steady at 64 CFS.
Fishing Conditions:
Good. Big Trico hatch early in the morning, with a spattering of Caddis as well throughout the day.
Go deep and heavy. Concentrate on fishing the deeper bend pools with a significant amount of weight.
Mainly attractor patterns like a worm or a coachman.
Owens River Gorge:
Water conditions:
Great. Flow: 45 CFS. This is a permanent flow required to be maintained by LADWP.
Fishing Conditions:
Not much changing here week to week. Be stealthy as the water is gin clear and the fish can definitely see you coming.
Stinging nettles are back. Also watch out for snakes.
Rock Creek:
Water conditions:
Great. Flows are at 33 CFS as of 6/27.
Fishing conditions:
Great! Stick mainly to attractor patterns.
Big and bright usually does the trick here.
Rush Creek:
Water conditions:
Fair. As of 6/28 flows are at 11 CFS above Grant Lake.
Fishing Conditions:
Good. Flows are down again, and the water is Gin clear, so be sure to use lighter tippet and be stealthy. Stick mainly to attractor patterns.
Lower Owens River:
Water conditions:
Poor. Flows up to 504 CFS as of 6/28.
Fishing conditions:
With the flows up over 500 CFS now it's probably not a bad idea to fish somewhere else, or go down below bishop to where the river is wider with no banks. Wet wading in the slow water must be nice when the temps are in the 90's and 100's! Just be careful.

PAHRANAGAT WILDLIFE REFUGE, LINCOLN COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports:
Anglers are finding some success at the upper marsh for panfish and catfish.
Mealworms or night crawlers below a bobber will catch fish.

PIT RIVER, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Very good fishing and expected to continue all summer long.
Good hatches of Golden Stones, Salmon flies, Caddis in the early evening and mayflies off and on all day. The Yellow Sallies are out!
The rainbows are munching # 14-16 Pheasant Tail Nymphs, Iron Sallies, # 6 Rubber Legs.
The Pit is a delightful choice at this time of year however it can be a bit demanding to wade thanks to slippery, bowling-ball like boulders and rocks.
It’s highly recommended to bring a wading staff and a  PFD (Personal Floatation Device) too.
Keep in mind, potential delays on 299E around Montgomery Creek.

You can find these hatches all day and into the evening.
This River will not disappoint!

SACRAMENTO RIVER (UPPER), CALIF:

J.D. Richey of www.fishingwithjd.com (916-388-1956) reports:
SALMON, SALMON & MORE SALMON!
Wow…there are a lot of salmon out in the ocean!
The fishing has been solid all up and down the coast with kings out the gate at N buoy up to Pt. Reyes. The Bodega boats have been running south to Bird and Elephant rocks just below Tomales and then north to Fort Ross for good scores of rockfish.
There is still plenty of krill though hard bait seems generally hard to find. The salmon are fat and feisty and many are getting off when hooked.
There are also silver salmon around, so be sure you know how to identify a coho as they must be immediately released.
Inside San Francisco Bay, the bass and halibut are heating up.

SAN JOAQUIN/RED’S MEADOW, CALIF:
Steve Osterman of Performance Guide Service (760-934-6101) (www.performanceanglers.com) reports:

Salmon are deep! They are being caught with anchovies around 80-120ft.
Rainbows are being caught first thing in the morning starting around 5:30 am. The Dry Creek area, Little Bone, and Bridge Bay have been producing good numbers as well.

LAKE TAHOE:
Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbons Charters (530-544-6552) (www.blueribbonfishing.com) reports:
Easy limits with the Macks running about 2-8 pounds with an occasional one in the double digit weight size.

The trout are keying on drifting worms right below the surface.
Kokanee are around 40-60 feet deep, but they are very small.
Trout however, have been seen anywhere from 12 inches, to 15 inches.  Courtesy of Mike’s Fishing Guide Service.

East Walker – West Walker – Sceirine Ranch - Hunewill Pond:
East Walker River:
The flows on the East have been moving up and down a bit this week and are currently at 144 CFS.
The fishing has been pretty good, we've been getting the best reports lately
on dry flies. There's some good pmd hatches in the morning then as the day wears on they're switching to caddis.
There's also been some good nymphing during times when fish are not rising. Haven't heard much about streamers lately, lots of bugs in the water so this is to be expected.
Fly patterns to try include: E/C caddis, EZ caddis, elk hair caddis, Fox's
poopah, 3-wire caddis, buckskin caddis, tailwater tiny, zebra midge, silver
streak and rainbow warrior.
West Walker River:
The West is fishing well also, the water is low and clear and the river has
been stocked up pretty well for the holiday week.
Fly anglers are being successful with hopper and hopper/dropper rigs, as well as ants, beetles, humpy's, prince nymphs, soft hackles and pheasant tails. Bait anglers are using eggs and crawlers and lure fishermen are going with Panther Martins and Rooster Tails.
Sceirine Ranch:
The Sceirine has been fishing well this week also, lots of nice rainbows and some browns have been making a showing.
Dry/dropper rigs have been good as well as some streamers and of course nymphs. Zuddlers, moal leeches, dead-drift crayfish, E/C caddis, chubby chernobyl, madam X, dark lord, birds nest, prince, pheasant tail, Fox's poopah, LaFontaines sparkle pupa and buckskin caddis all been doing well.

Hatch consists of midges, mayflys and crane flys and caddis in the evening. Nymphing is good with WD-40's, zebra midges, baetis emergers and buckskin nymphs.
If the " miracle mile" is packed as it has been fishing is good down river.
