1-80 reopened with reduced lanes due to fire near state line north of Lake Tahoe

9:45 p.m. update: Interstate 80 has one lane westbound near the fire at the CA/NV state line. Both eastbound lanes are open.

The fire has burned an estimated 500-600 acres, depending on which source is used. The fire is 5 percent contained. Winds tonight are expected to push the fire back down the mountain and higher winds are expected on Tuesday.

5:45 p.m. update: Interstate 80 is closed again due to the Farad Fire which has consumed 500 acres this afternoon, sending high plumes of smoke over the area into Reno. The fire started at about 1:00 p.m. on the shoulder of the freeway. It is burning to the northeast.

No structures have burned and there is no evacuation order in place. There has been some structure protection in the Gold Ranch and Verdi Peak area.

There are multiple air and ground units on scene.

According to the Nevada Department of Transportation I-80 in the area is closed "indefinitely." It is closed from Verdi to just west of Hinton but advisories are in place near Truckee for vehicles to exit the freeway.

3:45 p.m. update: One westbound lane is now open and eastbound lanes have reopened.

A brush fire near Gold Ranch has closed Interstate 80 in both directions. Traffic is being stopped at Verdi at the east, and Truckee on the west side.

Named the Farad Fire, it started at 1:02 p.m. Monday afternoon and has burned 20 acres at the last report from Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.
