Heat Advisory at Lake Tahoe and surrounding region this weekend; Know signs of heatstroke, heat exhaustion

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a heat advisory in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from noon on Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday. Reno and the Carson Valley will see high temperatures of 95-105 degrees, with low to mid-90s around Lake Tahoe communities.

Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses to occur so it is important to know how to care for yourself and know the warning signals.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, especially if out at Edgewood Tahoe for the American Century Championship. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent
rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.

Heat emergencies have three stages: heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. All three stages of a heat emergency are serious.
