24th annual Lake Tahoe Summit: Resilient Tahoe

Event Date:
August 25, 2020 - 10:00am

LAKE TAHOE, Nev./Calif. - The 24th annual Lake Tahoe Summit has moved to a virtual format this year. U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada will be hosting the event that will feature Olympian David Wise as the keynote speaker.

Since the first Lake Tahoe Summit in 1997, the area’s congressional representatives have pledged to keep working together and with local, state, and private sector partners to restore Tahoe’s environment, improve forest health, and confront climate change.

During last year's Summit at Valhalla in South Lake Tahoe, U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein dubbed those helping to keep the region pristine as "Team Tahoe."

Since that first summit 627 improvement and restoration projects have been completed and 148 were underway as of the last year's Summit with hundreds of millions of dollars spent to date. A great deal has been learned about the threats to the lake and great strides have been made in protecting and restoring this natural treasure.

From Senator Cortez Masto:

While we look forward each summer to coming together at Lake Tahoe to restate our commitment to preserving this important national treasure, it is unfortunately not safe or responsible to have such a large gathering this year. Like many Americans, we are adapting and I am pleased to invite you to join me in the first-ever virtual and 24th annual Lake Tahoe Summit on August 25, 2020.

The theme for this year’s Summit is “Resilient Tahoe” reflecting the legacy of 50 years of bi-state cooperation through the interstate compact and 24 years of bipartisan collaboration at the Summit while looking ahead to future environmental, infrastructure and economic challenges. Summit guests will hear from Nevada and California Congress Members and Governors and others who support funding for the Environmental Improvement Program at the Basin. More information will be available soon on the Summit’s keynote speaker.

I appreciate your willingness to adapt and join me in continuing the legacy of the Tahoe Summit even during these unusual circumstances. And I look forward to when we can come together again at this treasured place that we all work so hard to protect. You can register for the Summit here or call my office for more information at (775) 686-5750.

Nevada native David Wise is an American freestyle skier. He is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a four-time X Games Gold Medalist. In 2014, Wise won his third consecutive gold medal at X Games XVIII in Aspen, Colorado, before heading to Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics. In 2018, Wise won his fourth gold medal at the X Games just before he left for PyeongChang to defend his Olympic title. After a sub-par qualifying competition that placed him in the fifth drop-in position for the finals, Wise failed to complete each of his first two runs due, in both cases, to a binding malfunction. On his third and final run, Wise completed a career-best run to take the gold medal, the second Olympic gold medal of his career, with a score of 97.20.
