Lake Tahoe Unified School District to start the 2021/22 school year Thursday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Now that all neighborhoods on the South Shore have been repopulated after the Caldor Fire evacuations over the past two weeks, school will be starting at Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) sites on Thursday, September 16.

The final areas of the LTUSD boundary in the areas of South Upper Truckee, North Upper Truckee, and Christmas Valley have now been downgraded to an evacuation warning, and those in the South Lake Tahoe city limits have all warnings removed.

Starting on Thursday will give families three days to travel, unpack, and prepare for the start to the school year.

"As a School District we have had the privilege to be part of the conversations at Incident Command these past few days and in collaboration with Incident Command and our local partners it has been determined safe to begin preparations for school and we are set to begin Thursday September 16th," said LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Todd Cutler. "We will continue to monitor the situation and if there is a need to make any changes to our decisions we will let you know. It’s also important to note that we have put in place safety plans and procedures if something was to dramatically change once we start school."

The LTUSD custodial, maintenance, grounds, and transportation staff have been working over the past week to clean every site and replace HVAC, bus and air purifier filters. ABM Building & Energy Solutions is assisting them with assessing and cleaning all components of the air filtration systems. In addition, ABM has partnered with NES, Inc., a recognized leader in environmental, health & safety training and consult, to certify the indoor air quality and environmental compliance at all school sites.

A 'Visit with the Superintendent' is scheduled for Monday, September 13, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. and will be conducted virtually. Dr. Todd Cutler said he looks forward to answering any questions from families and students regarding the opening of school. For participants wishing to ask questions or make comments, this meeting will be streamed here via Zoom for all participants and for those wishing to observe it will be viewable live on the District’s YouTube channel “LTUSD Meetings.”
