Local officers honored during National Thank a Police Officer Day

In light of the recent ambushes and assignations of police officers across the country, communities in the U.S. celebrated the third "National Thank a Police Officer Day" on September 19.

South Lake Tahoe local Daniella Flatau tried to encourage people to support law enforcement by organizing the local celebration of a day meant to show those sworn to protect the public that people support them, especially in a day and age where violence against the police is increasing daily.

Flatau took to facebook and social media to get people out to the El Dorado County Sheriff's and South Lake Tahoe Police offices on the 19th. With a parade going on as well as the grand opening of the Bijou Bike Park, not as many people showed up to honor the officers and she hoped. Flatau prepared goody bags complete with a bottle of wine to give to law enforcement.

During the appreciation day, Flatau handed out "mustaches" to the ladies to wear.

"The mustaches on the ladies are insta-cop mustaches I made for everyone, so that was kind of fun," said Flatau.

"My purpose is to create awareness in our town of the fact that this is a very trying time to be a police officer (with the recent assassinations and ambushes happening across the nation), and the morale of law enforcement is quite low, so we need to show our support now, more than ever," said Flatau.
