Nevada given another $20 million for roadwork

Approximately $20 million is headed to the state of Nevada in additional highway spending funds after excess funds from other states was distributed.

The fiscal year-end funds are handed out every August when the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) reassigns transportation funding from states unable to utilize the full amount of funding originally authorized to them. The funds are then redistributed to states demonstrating projects which are ready-to-go and meet all federal funding requirements. To qualify, NDOT demonstrated that it will fully utilize federal transportation funds authorized to Nevada in fiscal year 2016, as well as demonstrated current projects which fit all requirements for receiving additional federal funding redistribution.

The additional spending authority will help fund road projects throughout the state, such as Project NEON improvements on Interstate 15 in downtown Las Vegas, as well as enhancements to Interstate 580 in the Reno-Carson City area, Interstate 80 in Humboldt County and more.

In the last 12 years, NDOT has been able to secure more than $165 million in additional obligation authority for use on vital Nevada transportation projects.

“Our priority at NDOT is to provide a transportation system that keeps Nevada safe and connected, and provide it through the most efficient and responsible use of taxpayer funds,” NDOT Director Rudy Malfabon explained. “This is a testament to the work of our NDOT staff, as well as our partners at local FHWA offices, to make sure that the state continually utilizes all funding available for important transportation projects. We continue putting more federal dollars to work here in Nevada!”
