King Fire, Dog Fire and Applegate Fire updates

Highway 80 has been reopened to four lanes this evening as firefighters continue to fight the Applegate Fire which had caused three lanes to be closed since Wednesday.

It is still unknown how the fire started but it has been listed as suspicious in nature. The fire has burned 420 acres as of Thursday evening and is now 25% contained. Firefighters worked in steep and rugged terrain to get the containment line in place. There are 1,419 personnel on the scene with air tanker support from the U.S. Forest Service.

Several neighborhoods in the Applegate area remained evacuated. For up to date lists of what roads are closed, the Placer County Sheriff's facebook page will keep the public informed.

Good news from the King Fire which burned 97,717 acres west of Lake Tahoe. It is now 100% contained! Over 500 firefighters remain on the scene to do mop-up and suppression of the fire. Occasional isolated single tree torching on exposed aspects is anticipated as the low humidity and warm days continue. Heavy dead and down fuels will also continue to hold heat and burn.

Yosemite's Dog Fire has burned 279 acres and it too is 25% contained. It is suspected that the fire was start by sparks generated by hot metal fragments from a vehicle. Evacuation orders have been lifted for Foresta.
