Fire Weather Watch and Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Authorities are concerned with the forecast of gusty winds and low humidity in the Lake Tahoe area on Sunday, prompting the issuance of both a Lake Wind Advisory and Fire Weather Watch for much of the day.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Lake Tahoe from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. and a Fire Weather Watch from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Winds will be from the southwest 15-20 mph with gusts up to 40 mph at lake level and 65 mph over the ridges and humidity will be 20-28 percent. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.

Waves on the lake are expected to be 2-3 feet with the highest waves from mid-lake to north and east shores.

Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

The warm temperatures of Saturday will start to drop almost 20 degrees on Tuesday.
