First storm of the season drops snow around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has been busy this morning with vehicles stuck in the snow around Lake Tahoe and on the surrounding mountain passes. Meyers is reporting 12" of snow, South Lake Tahoe 9.5", Genoa 7", Alpine Meadows 7" and the Gardnerville Ranchos up to 14".

This is a good day to stay off the roads. If driving, follow all controls, give yourself distance from the car in front of you, and take your time. The storm is moving out of the area but there will be some lingering snow until around 1:30 p.m.

At Emerald Bay, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) is closing SR89 on the northbound lane at Emerald Bay so a tow truck can get a disabled vehicle out of the snow. Another two without chains appear to be stuck as of 10:00 a.m. including one of their patrol vehicles that went to assist. They are also waiting on a plow to clear the roadway.

Vehicles without chains are stuck on Ponca Street and Warren Way, tow trucks have been called. On Pioneer Trail at Old Dump Road, vehicle up an embankment.

Two vehicles have collided on SR88 on the Carson Pass.

Expect more spinouts and incidents on I80 over the Sierra as well on US50 over Echo Summit. Many cars are now stuck on North Upper Truckee, all without chains.
