Soroptimists sponsoring "Be The Change" art and writing contests for STMS students

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students in grades 6-8 at South Tahoe Middle School (STMS) experienced Challenge Day last week. It was a day of connecting across lines of difference, giving a sense of belonging, and giving students the tools to create the culture they want in the school.

The theme of the Challenge Day program is to "Be the Change." To help the STMS students be empowered to create change at their school, the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra Club (SITS) is sponsoring a contest for all students in grades 6-8. The service club has given students prompts for both writing and posters, with great prizes.

The writing prompt: Imagine you're making your community a better place. As a middle school student what changes would you speak up for, and why? (computer printed, 500 words or less)

The art poster prompt: Imagine you're making your community a better place. How would you depict the changes artistically on a poster?

The contest entries are due Wednesday, December 13. Turn papers in to Mr. Lambdin, Mrs. Moyer, or the office. See Mr. Principato for posters and art supplies and turn finished project to him.

The SITS members are awarding $200 for first place in each grade level (6, 7, and 8), and $100 for second place in each grade level. The winners will be announced and checks presented before Winter Break begins.

The Challenge Day program at STMS was split into two days. Last Thursday, 100 seventh graders spent a day with the Challenge Day founders, Yvonne and Rich who started the life-changing program 36 years ago. Then on Friday, all STMS students attended an assembly led by Yonne and Rich, and funded by the Tahoe Alliance for Safe Kids (TASK). Students learned through positive interactions how to be empathetic and more connected to the school community.
