Alpine County School Board approves significant substitute teacher rates

ALPINE COUNTY, Calif. - During its December 8 meeting, the Alpine County School District Board voted a significant increase to its substitute teaching rates.

Before the meeting, the Alpine County rates were among the lowest in the region, but now, after the board's decision to help fill a big need, the rates are among the highest.

The high rates are intended to attract substitute teachers from South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley.

The Superintendent recommended the Board adopt a new salary schedule for certificated substitutes, effective the first day of the next month after adoption. With hourly wages rising in California, the District said their rates should be competitive.

The Board's decision:

Short-term 1-10 days of substituting went from $135 per day to $215 per day
Extended term 11-24 days went from $145 per day to $225 per day
There was no rate for long-term (25+ days) and that is now $235 per day Retirees went from $270 per day to $300 per day

In comparison, Lake Tahoe Unified School District substitute rates go from $150 to $210, Douglas County rates are $130-$170, Amador County $175-$200, and substitutes at El Dorado County's Blue Ridge & Rite of Passage Charter earn $215/day.
