Big rig fire closes US50 by South Lake Tahoe Airport

Monday 3:25 p.m. UPDATE: There is a little more information available on this morning's collision in South Lake Tahoe. One big rig truck was traveling east on US50 when it came upon a stopped big rig that was in the designated turn lane in front of the Sierra Ready Mix, facing east. The big rig that was traveling east sideswiped the truck that was stopped.

The big rig that was traveling east came to a stop and caught on fire and the driver was able to get out.

According to South Lake Tahoe Police, neither speed, driver impairment, or road conditions were a factor.

UPDATE: This morning at approximately 6:38 a.m., the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to Hwy 50 between H Street and Airport Road for a collision involving two semi-trucks. One of the semi-trucks caught on fire as a result of the collision.

There were no injuries and the road reopened after cleanup was completed.

The crash is still under investigation. A person in the area said both big rigs were traveling east on US50 just inside the South Lake Tahoe city limits in front of Sierra Ready Mix.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. 50 in front of Sierra Ready Mix by the airport is closed this morning after a big rig caught on fire.

The fire has been extinguished but the road will be closed for cleanup.

Access to the airport is possible from the west, but the roadway is closed from the direction of the Y.
