El Dorado County Law Enforcement: Halloween Crackdown on Drunk Drivers

This Halloween, police, sheriff and CHP Officers in El Dorado County will crack down on drunk and drugged drivers throughout the region with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort. The Avoid the 6 DUI Task Force has given a fair warning to all partygoers: keep the party off the road.

“The scariest part of Halloween is not the spooky costumes and scary pranks, it’s the impaired drivers. All too often, partygoers don’t plan ahead and choose to drive impaired, but a costume can’t disguise drunk driving,” said Press Information Officer Dave Stevenson.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Tahoe Yellow Cress is small native plant that grows on the beaches of Lake Tahoe and nowhere else in the world. Currently, the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District (NTCD) is working with lakefront property owners on a stewardship project to educate homeowners on Tahoe Yellow Cress and offer opportunities to steward it on their property.

October 20-26 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the City of South Lake Tahoe is joining agencies across the country to help bring awareness to the public about the harms of lead.

This year’s theme is "Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future” which emphasizes the many ways parents can reduce a child’s exposure to lead and prevent its serious health effects.

Forest Service Signs Decision for Fallen Leaf Lake Project

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit has approved a project to improve the recreational experience in the Fallen Leaf Lake area, while protecting the natural, cultural, and historic resources of the area.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel Invests $5 Million in Renovations

What many locals remember as Embassy Suites, the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel is still a thriving and vibrant part of the community. On April 1 of this year, the hotel owners, Ken Corporation, Ltd and management team, PHR Management, announced that they would be dropping the franchise agreement with Embassy Suites and become the Lake Tahoe Resort. Since then, they have been investing $5 million in property renovations and upgrading all 400 rooms in the nine-story all-suite hotel. The work is taking place in phases with completion planned for the winter season.

Lake Tahoe IRONMAN Athletes Vie for $75,000 in Prizes

Nearly 2,500 athletes are headed to the North Lake Tahoe area this week for IRONMAN, a full triathlon which will have them running 26.2 miles, biking 112 miles and swimming for 2.4 miles. The sold out event will have the events spread from Lake Tahoe to Squaw Valley and Truckee.

There are 13 age divisions from age 18 to 80 as well as professional and physically challenged divisions. Fifty winners from the event will qualify for the Championship IRONMAN in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii in October, 2014.

Lake Tahoe Community College hosts award-winning poets

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series proudly presents an evening of poetry with Robert Krut and Patricia Smith on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the LTCC Library. The poets will read, engage the audience in a Q & A and sign books. This free event is open to the community and books will be available for purchase.

Robert Krut’s “This Is the Ocean” is the recipient of the 2012 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually by local publisher Bona Fide Books in honor of the Lake Tahoe artist who died in 2009.

Low-Cost Community Flu Clinics Announced in South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Public Health Division will begin conducting low-cost community flu vaccination clinics in South Lake Tahoe starting September 25.

Despite smoky skies, South Lake Tahoe was still a hot spot this Labor Day Weekend. The 4th Annual Sample the Sierra festival brought in masses of people to taste the unique flavors of the Sierra Nevada. The kickoff Winemakers Dinner at Bumgarner Winery spoiled attendees with a five course meal prepared in the wood fired oven with each course appropriately paired with one of Bumgarner’s fine wines. California, Nevada lawmakers introduce $415 million federal bill to restore Lake Tahoe

Nevada Senator Harry Reid today co-sponsored, along with Senator Dean Heller (R-NV), and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA), the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act that was introduced today by Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA). The Lake Tahoe Restoration Act continues the federal commitment to Lake Tahoe by authorizing $415 million over 10 years to improve Lake Tahoe’s water clarity, reduce risks from catastrophic wildfires, combat invasive species and restore and protect the environment in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

3-D Sandbox exhibit brings Lake Tahoe watersheds to life

Sandboxes have come a long way. A new interactive, augmented-reality exhibit brings watersheds to life at the University of California, Davis' Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, Nev.

Participants run their hands through real sand, forming mountains, lakes and rivers, while a 3-D camera and digital projector allowusers to create virtual topography in real time, make it "rain" and watch where the water flows.

Low Turnout for Loop Road Project Meeting

Very few community members turned out for the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project meeting held at Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel on Thursday night. Invitations were mailed and/or hand delivered to all residents in the proposed project area so they’d be able to better understand the process of relocation and financial reimbursement should the Revitalization Project be approved. Since many of those invited speak Spanish and Tagalog, interpreters were on hand to assist with translations, but no one in attendance needed their services.

Barton Foundation golf tournament raises more than $14,000 for Community Health Endowment

Barton Foundation's 19th annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser held on Thursday, June 20 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course raised more than $14,000 for Barton’s Community Health Endowment fund. The Hawaiian themed, “Tiki Tee Off and Lei Up Luau Golf Tournament hosted a field of 108 golfers and 160 luau attendees – complete with a roasted pig, raffle prizes and a performance by the Ukuleles of Tahoe.
