7:45 p.m. update: There is less smoke in the Lake Tahoe basin this evening but air quality is still measuring in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range. The Detwiler Fire is burning in drought stricken chaparral and in an area of severe tree mortality and has consumed 70,596 acres and is now 10 percent contained.

As of tonight, 50 residences and 49 other structures have been destroyed and widespread evacuation orders are still in place.

Widespread haze over Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City areas is forecast again for Friday.

11:30 p.m. update: All evacuation orders have been lifted on both the Brenda Fire and the Cold Springs Fire.

Multiple resources aggressively attacked both fires Friday, preventing them from moving through the dry hillsides.

As of tonight, Truckee Meadows Fire Department is reporting 1500-2000 acres have burned in the Cold Springs Fire.

The Brenda Fire east of Washoe Lake has burned an estimated 1200 acres and it is 10 percent contained.

Several fires in California and Nevada are burning on Sunday with thousands of firefighting personnel fighting the blazes. The list below is of current fires in both states, updated with information available at 11:00 a.m. on July 9.

California Fires

Alamo Fire - 23,867 acres, 10 percent contained, San Luis Obispo County

Schaeffer Fire - 14,342 acres, 11 percent contained, 798 personnel, 17 miles north of Kernville, CA

Whittier Fire - 7,800 acres, 5 percent contained, 400 personnel with more on the way, Lake Cachuma, Santa Barbara County

Crews with Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Department of Forestry and Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District have responded to a new fire burning near Spanish Springs and the Pyramid Highway. Dubbed the Winnemucca Ranch Fire, flames have consumed 1,500 acres since starting at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday.

Both ground and air resources are on scene.

At least 11 homes are threatened, according to Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.

Ironwood Road is being evacuated, according to the Washoe County Sheriff.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service resumed prescribed fire operations today and may continue operations tomorrow, June 14, 2017. If conditions are favorable, operations may take place on Brockway Summit and near Glenbrook. Operations may continue for several days, weather permitting. A tree caught on fire Monday afternoon after being struck by lightning. The tree and surrounding brush are still burning today and the fire has covered about one acre in steep terrain above Foothill Road in the Carson Valley southeast of Lake Tahoe.

Two engine crews hiked up to the fire and they are getting assistance from helicopter drops of water.

Fire officials kept an eye on the fire last night since hiking into the remote area was not safe for crews. They headed up the mountain Tuesday according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations next week beginning May 22.

If conditions are favorable, operations are scheduled to take place near Sugar Pine Point, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers. Operations may continue over the next several weeks, weather permitting.

This June is wildfire awareness month at Lake Tahoe. It also marks the 10th anniversary of the Angora Fire, the most destructive wildland fire in memory at Tahoe.

An illegal and abandoned campfire started the Angora Fire on June 24, 2007. The fire quickly spread toward Meyers, stoked by strong winds and forests overgrown with hazardous fuels. In a few days, the fire burned 3,100 acres and destroyed 254 homes.

Weather permitting, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations next week beginning May 15, 2017. If conditions are favorable, operations may take place near Sugar Pine Point, Brockway Summit, Incline Village, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Lake Tahoe Airport, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers. Operations may continue over the next several weeks, weather permitting.

A) 5 acres on Lower Kinsgbury

If conditions are favorable around Lake Tahoe next week, the North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Contservancy, and the U.S. Forest Service will be continuing their prescribed fire operations.

Operations are scheduled near Sugar Pine Point, Brockway Summit, Incline Village, Glenbrook, Lower Kingsbury Grade, Ski Run Boulevard, Lake Tahoe Airport, Fallen Leaf Lake and Meyers.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) released the final decision to reduce hazardous fuels on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The West Shore Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project will treat approximately 4,875 acres extending from Emerald Bay to Burton Creek State Park.

If conditions are favorable next week, North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts, California State Parks, California Tahoe Conservancy, and the U.S. Forest Service may continue prescribed fire operations on April 24, 2017.

Scheduled operations would be near Meeks Bay, Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, and Meyers. Weather permitting, operations may continue over the next several weeks.

For the past 26 years, Judi McCallum has been keeping the El Dorado County Supervisors from Lake Tahoe organized, on schedule, and connected to those they serve.

"I have had such a great run as a Supervisor's Assistant at the County of El Dorado Board of Supervisors doing exactly what I love most, helping people," McCallum told South Tahoe Now during her first hour of retirement.

Since 1991 she has worked for four District V Supervisors, with 18 elected Supervisors down the hallway, more than 10 Chief Administrators or Interims, and 1,600 "amazing" county employees.

If conditions are favorable, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may resume prescribed fire operations beginning today, March 16, 2017. Operations may take place near Tahoe City and Glenbrook and may continue as conditions allow.

On the schedule is the burning of 50 acres of hand piles at Logan Creek Drive and Highway 50 as well as 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High and Rocky Ridge Properties.

If conditions are favorable, the North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District and the U.S. Forest Service will continue prescribed fire operations on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. They will take place on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe near Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Carnelian Bay, and Incline Village.

A) Jennifer/Tyner Urban Fuels Reduction area near Incline Village will have 34 acres of hand piles scheduled to be burned.

B) Tahoe City along Fairway, across from NTFPD Station 51 - 8 acres to be burned.

C) Hwy 267 has 50 acres schedule for burning.

A quick response by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) saved a Merced Avenue four-plex from major damage Wednesday night.

At 10:54 p.m. December 14, SLTFR received a call of fire in one of the four two-story units. When they arrived they found the bottom floor engulfed. Within seven minutes, the fire was knocked down according to South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston.

Prescribed fire operations by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California Tahoe Conservancy and the U.S. Forest Service will continue next week at several locations around Lake Tahoe.

Fall and winter bring cooler temperatures and precipitation, which favor prescribed burning. The joint efforts to remove excess vegetation are scheduled to take place at nine different locations including Glenbrook, Cave Rock, Round Hill, lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Paradise and Meyers.

An individual alleges he was burned while sledding because of a controlled fire conducted by a federal agency that was hidden and left burning.

Gianfranco Rufino filed a complaint on Nov. 16, 2016 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California against United States, alleging negligence.
