August gaming report released: Area casinos see gains

Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Carson City casinos saw an overall gain in their incomes in August, 2017 according to the monthly report released today by the Nevada Gaming Commission.

The reported gaming wins for August and difference when compared to August 2016:

South Shore casinos - $25,576,000 - up 7.02%
Carson City, Carson Valley casinos - $9,390,210 - up 8.98%
North Shore Lake Tahoe casinos - 3,149,398 - up 10.39%
State of Nevada - 989,510,649 - up 14.91%

Ty Robben found guilty of 8 felonies; Sentencing in October

The man who has led anti-South Lake Tahoe Police, El Dorado County Sheriff, District Attorney and Judge campaigns was found guilty on Monday in Sacramento Superior Court on eight felony charges.

The Battle Born Harley Davidson Street Vibrations Fall Rally will be held in Carson City from Wednesday, September 27 through Sunday, October 1 from 9:00 a.m. until "the last bike leaves."

The event is free and will include over 70 vendors, the area’s largest beer garden, live music, West Coast Connection stunt shows, burnouts and all of your favorite food trucks. All of this makes this annual party one not to miss.

The Harley-Davidson Demo Truck will also be there with 18 brand new models that can be taken for a test ride on Friday and Saturday.

South Lake Tahoe man facing multiple charges after Douglas County arrest

South Lake Tahoe resident Ray Brashears, age 33, is facing a plethora of charges after being arrested by deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) Tuesday night.

The deputies pulled over Brashears September 19 at 9:00 p.m. and discovered he had an active misdemeanor warrant out of Tahoe Township for theft. He was also on probation through Nevada Parole and Probation.

Museum in Carson City to host community birthday bash for Glenn Lucky

Former South Lake Tahoe resident Glenn Lucky turn 65 this month, and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is planning a big birthday party in his honor on September 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the Dema Guinn Concourse of the museum at 600 N. Carson Street.

Lucky was born on Sept. 27, 1952 in Coronado, Calif. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was just one.

He and his family moved to the South Shore when Glenn was 3-year-old.

Both suspects connected to Oregon homicide arrested in Nevada

UPDATE 10:59PM: Suspect Kyle Steele turned himself in late Monday night at the sheriff's office administration building, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Both suspects are now in custody.

Missing woman may be in South Lake Tahoe or Carson City area

Carson City sheriff's investigators are asking for the public's assistance in locating a 56-year-old woman who has been reported missing.

Sara Reyes is suspected to be homeless in the Carson City, Reno and South Lake Tahoe areas. She was reported missing Sunday, Sept. 10. She has been entered into the national missing persons data base.

Resort Triangle in North Lake Tahoe gets funding for new trails

The Placer County Board of Supervisors have approved two chunks of money to go to their plans to transform North Lake Tahoe into a thriving, local community and, at the same time, provide visitors with a great experience.

Now halfway complete, the "Resort Triangle" will consist of a continuous 62-mile trail that runs from the Town of Truckee to Northstar, then to Kings Beach, to Tahoe City and back to Truckee.

Victims of 2011 mass shooting in Carson City honored with memorial run

Around two dozen runners and walkers remembered the victims of a mass shooting in Carson City that happened six years ago Wednesday in which five people died, including three Nevada National Guardsmen.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, and Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, were killed in a shooting at the south Carson City International House of Pancakes. Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, was also killed and her husband injured. The shooter, a man suffering from mental illness, turned the gun on himself.

Red flag warnings in place for Lake Tahoe; Fire weather concerns

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the Lake Tahoe area from 2:00 p.m. Wednesday to 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

Thunderstorms with potentially dangerous lightening strikes are forecast along with heavy rain and possible flash flooding.

A negatively tilted trough is setting the stage for a widespread outbreak of thunderstorms this afternoon through Thursday from the northern Sierra and far western Nevada to the Oregon border.

Shore Shore casinos biggest loser in July; Carson Valley casinos on the plus side

Casinos on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe had a rough month in July, having their "win" of $23,853,279 down 14.76 percent from figures a year ago. Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville had a "win" of $9,529,716, up eight percent from July of 2016.

As a state, Nevada were down 1.73 percent with a "win" of $997,972,643.

The "win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Author JoAnn Conner Shares New Novel at SLT Library

Conner's book, "Heartwood", is a work of historical fiction set in 1867 Bridgeport, California. The book tells the story of a young man who came west after the Civil War and stops in Bridgeport, where he buys an old ranch.Historical tidbits are laced through the story, with facts about Virginia City, Bodie, Genoa, and Carson City helping to build the tension to a surprise twist at the end. Books will be sold and signed at the event. Free and open to all.

Underwater ROV locates bodies of man missing in Lake Tahoe and boy in Stampede Reservoir

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The body of Dan Pham, the man missing in Lake Tahoe after a kayaking trip, has been found by an underwater search team just a few days after they found the body of 11-year-old Marcos Vasquez.

On June 8, 2017, Pham, whose full name is Pham Dan Vu Thanh, called a friend at 9:15 a.m. to tell him he was going kayaking and camping in the Lester Beach area. As of 6:15 p.m. that evening there had been no word from Dan.

Special evening meeting for City Council's Cannabis Workshop

The South Lake Tahoe City Council is holding a Cannabis Workshop on Tuesday, August 29 at 5:00 p.m. in their chambers at the Lake Tahoe Airport.

They decided to hold the meeting during the evening hours instead of their normal 9:00 a.m. meeting time in hopes more citizens would attend and speak.

No sales of cannabis are currently allowed in California outside of medical marijuana dispensaries. The state is finalizing their regulations and the City wants to be prepared as those are slated to start January 1, 2018.

New fire east of Carson City burns over 1,100 acres

The Lyons Fire burning 15 miles east of Carson City has now consumed 1,128 acres since lightning started it Tuesday afternoon.

68 firefighters are on the scene of the fire which is on the east side of the Pine Nut Mountain Range.

There is no containment at this time.

Update on other area fires:

The Voltaire Fire behind Fandango in Carson City is now fully contained, but not after burning 135 acres and causes some evacuations. That fire was also started by lightning on Tuesday afternoon.

Four brothers arrested for string of high-end bicycle thefts in Truckee

Four brothers from San Francisco have been arrested in connection with the theft of an estimated $125,000 worth high-end mountain bikes from Truckee.

Starting in June, 2017, the Truckee Police Department began receiving theft reports of high-end mountain bikes from various locations in Truckee. The most common scenario happened with bikes on vehicle racks that were secured with the locking mechanism of the rack or a cable style lock.

Multiple fires start as lightning storm passes through the Sierra and Carson City

There are several lightning caused fires currently burning in the Carson City/Carson Valley area of Nevada as well as ones at Genoa Peak and Duane Bliss Peak above Lake Tahoe.

A storm system is still in the area with multiple lightning strikes.

Brush fire burning in canyon behind Fandango Casino in Carson City

UPDATE 6:29PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said conditions are looking better this evening, with the fire around 70 to 75 percent contained. There is not acreage estimate yet but it is likely around 100 acres and probably less than 200 acres, he said.

“Around 100 firefighters are on scene battling the blaze as well as two airplanes and two helicopters. We have released some resources now so they can go to other fires in the region.”

Evacuations remain in place for now in Voltaire Canyon and Carson Colony areas. The cause of the fire is believed to be a lightning strike.

Carson City deputy stabbed at Carson Nugget; Suspect shot

UPDATE: A shooting at the Carson Nugget Friday evening just before 6:15 p.m. has left two injured, authorities said, including one Carson City sheriff's deputy who was stabbed and the stabbing suspect who was shot.

The deputy is in good condition, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. The incident happened when law enforcement and security attempted to detain a suspicious suspect. During the incident the deputy was stabbed or cut in the head with a knife and shots were fired at the suspect, Furlong said. The incident happened on the south side of the Nugget near the loading dock area.

NHP and MADD team up to keep Nevada highways safe

The Nevada Highway Patrol Association (NHPA) and Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) announced a new strategic partnership today. The partnership will combine the NHPA's goal of continued safety on Nevada's highways and MADD's goals to end drunk and drugged driving, support victims of drunk driving, and bring an end to underage drinking.

Local IHOP and Applebee's not included in locations to be shuttered

The parent company of many Applebee's and IHOP restaurants plans to close up to 160 locations according to a report released Thursday, but both the South Lake Tahoe and Carson City locations are franchised by other companies and therefore not affected.

In fact, the South Lake Tahoe IHOP will reopen Saturday, August 12 with a new look, new logo and new signage. Their being closed for the remodel led to speculation they were included in the list of shuttered restaurants.

South Tahoe High grad returns as Barton's new spine specialist

A South Tahoe High graduate has come back to the South Shore community to become the new spine specialist at the Tahoe Center for Orthopedics and Tahoe Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

Zachary Child, MD, a 1991 graduate of STHS, is a board certified orthopedic spine surgeon and musculoskeletal oncologist. He is skilled in addressing back pain and finding surgical and non-surgical options that help patients reach optimal spine health.

Western Nevada College observatory to offer eclipse viewing

Don’t have the time or means to travel to the "path of totality" to view a total solar eclipse later this summer? The Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College has you covered when the moon covers the sun on August 21.

Although the campus will be hundreds of miles south of the "path of totality" and will experience a partial eclipse, the public can get a better view of the solar eclipse on that Monday morning at the observatory on the Carson City campus.

Carson City fire blamed on fireworks

A 20-acre brush fire in Carson City on Thursday was caused by fireworks, according to fire officials. The fire is now fully contained.

At 3:50 p.m. August 3, fire broke out behind the Greenhouse Nursery there was immediate response from Carson City, East Fork Fire Protection, Tahoe Douglas Fire, Truckee Meadows, Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Forest Service. Aircraft also flew in from Sierra Front Interagency in Minden.

David Antonucci to speak on Mark Twain at Dangberg Historic Park

Author David C. Antonucci will speak on his book Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 12, at 10:00 am.

In 1861, Samuel Clemens, the man who would become Mark Twain, hiked to Lake Tahoe to stake a claim for a timber ranch. He spent many blissful days on the Lake but carelessly allowed his campfire to escape, creating a spectacular wildfire. He later wrote about his experiences in his 1872 memoir, Roughing It.

Chautauqua of Major Ormsby and Lucky Bill at Dangberg Historic Park

In a one man show, Chris Bayer will portray both Major William Ormsby and Lucky Bill Thorington in “The Major and the Gambler” at Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, August 9, at 6:30 pm.

Major William Mathew Ormsby was born in 1814 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Ormsby was a teamster, failed horse dealer, citizen at large, visionary and one of the most important figures in the founding of Nevada and its capitol, Carson City. He was killed in 1860 during the Pyramid Lake Paiute uprising.

Air quality issues close Bank of the West in South Lake Tahoe

8:00 p.m. update: Road construction on Highway 50 is what led to the closure of Bank of the West in South Lake Tahoe.

"Nearby construction resulted in an air quality issue at our South Tahoe Branch, which was quickly identified and is being remedied," Anita Fox, Senior Vice President of Public Relations and Corporate Communications for Bank of the West told South Tahoe Now this evening. "We anticipate re-opening the branch no later than Thursday."

In the meantime, those wishing to conduct in-branch transactions can visit the bank's Tahoe City Branch at 150 West Lake Boulevard.

New freeway connecting Lake Tahoe to Reno opens Wednesday

The trip from Lake Tahoe to Reno just got a bit shorter as the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) opens the final three miles of the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway project to traffic on Wednesday, August 2 at 10:00 a.m.

Construction on this final, southern portion of the project began in 2015.

As part of a phased opening, the new freeway ramps between Fairview Drive at the northern end of the new Carson City Freeway will open later that afternoon or on August 3.

Author to speak on Nevada State Children's Home at Dangberg Historic Park

Author Bonnie Boice Nishikawa will speak on her book Nevada State Orphans/Children’s Home: My Life as a “Home” Kid at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Sunday, August 6, at 10:00 am.

The Nevada State Orphans Home at Carson City was authorized in 1869 by the legislature with construction beginning the same year. The first child was admitted in October of 1870.

Paul Francis D’Anneo

Surrounded by family at his home in Carson City, Paul Francis D'Anneo passed from this life to the next July 20, 2017. Paul was born in Oakland, CA on November 24, 1933 to Arnaldo and Ruth (Dobbins) D'Anneo. He married Barbara Moore in Berkeley, CA. Having attended Cal Poly, he worked as an electronics engineer.

Water restored to Tahoe Keys Marina

4:30 p.m. update: At 3:35 p.m. Friday afternoon the water was turned back on at the Tahoe Keys Marina. The two parties, Tahoe Keys Property Owners Association and Tahoe Keys Marina Management Inc., were able to work out an arrangement to get things flowing again.

The marina's lawyer Michael Matuska said he will file notice with the court to vacate the August 3 hearing as the two parties will be working on a continued relationship out of court.

Matuska did not release the specifics of the arrangement that restored the water service which has been down since July 11.

Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

In their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

1000s walk, ride and skate on new I-580 in Carson City

Thousands of people turned out Saturday morning to celebrate the near-completion of the much-anticipated Carson City Interstate 580 freeway bypass riding their bicycles, walking, jogging or skating on top of the pavement that will soon carry tens of thousands of vehicles upon it when open next month.

The I-580 run, walk and ride event began about 9 a.m. Saturday and continued until noon.

Detwiler Fire burns 70,596 acres; Haze expected Friday in Lake Tahoe-Reno-Carson City area

7:45 p.m. update: There is less smoke in the Lake Tahoe basin this evening but air quality is still measuring in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range. The Detwiler Fire is burning in drought stricken chaparral and in an area of severe tree mortality and has consumed 70,596 acres and is now 10 percent contained.

As of tonight, 50 residences and 49 other structures have been destroyed and widespread evacuation orders are still in place.

Widespread haze over Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City areas is forecast again for Friday.

Lake Tahoe air quality to continue in the unhealthy range

The intensifying Detwiler Fire near Mariposa, Calif. continues to send smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin, Alpine County, Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley, causing air quality to be in the unhealthy range.

As of Wednesday morning the Detwiler fire had burned over 45,000 acres, sending a plume of smoke due north, into our area. It is 7 percent contained and caused the evacuation of the town of Mariposa as well as many surrounding roads and neighborhoods.

California fire sending smoke into Lake Tahoe Basin and Reno

A large fire in California in Mariposa County is sending out a lot of smoke, some of it ending up in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Detwiler Fire has burned 15,500 acres as of Tuesday morning, is five percent contained and threatens 300 homes along Highway 49 north of the town of Mariposa.

Winds from the south are sending that smoke along the Sierra, over Lake Tahoe and into Carson City and Reno areas according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Teen reported missing in Lake Tahoe area found safe

2:00 p.m. update: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: Juvenile Sean Ascuaga of Reno was located at Marlette Dam. He was found safe and unharmed, but will be checked by paramedics before transporting back to Carson City to family members.

Search teams from Carson City and Washoe County are looking for a missing 17-year-old male who has been reported missing and was last seen in the Chimney Beach area of Lake Tahoe on Monday afternoon.

LAKE TAHOE - Boating, rafting, kayaking and paddling are just a few ways to enjoy beautiful Lake Tahoe, but they come with simple safety precautions and preparations to ensure that day is complete and enjoyable.

"People are very excited to get on the water," said Edwin Lyngar, Nevada Department of Wildlife's (NDOW) Water Educator. "Take safety precautions as you can't depend on luck."

Lyngar as well as both California and Nevada water safety experts were at Sand Harbor last week to inform the public about how easy it is to be safe on the water.

South Lake Tahoe to see week of highs 78-85

4:00 p.m. Saturday update: The popular saying "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes" is true again in Lake Tahoe. The National Weather Service in Reno has updated their forecast:

Saturday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11 p.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 51. West wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light in the evening.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 86. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

Couple sought in Carson City, Douglas County fraud investigations

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Investigation Division are asking for help in locating suspects in multiple fraud investigations.

Brandon Newberg and his wife Mindy Newberg are suspects in multiple fraud cases in Carson City and Douglas County. Their last known address was on the 1300 block of Kimmerling in Douglas County. The Newberg’s may have recently fled to Las Vegas Nevada to avoid law enforcement.

Construction underway on Gondola Vista Estates in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In the works since 2002, construction has begun on a new housing development project underneath the gondola in South Lake Tahoe.

Victims identified in fatal Kingsbury Grade crash

Carson City residents have been identified as the victim's in Tuesday night's fatal collision on Kingsbury Grade.

On July 4 at 9:26 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol troopers responded to the scene of a head-on collision on SR207/Kingsbury about two miles up from Foothill Road. Upon arrival they found a crash involving a 2013 Ford F150 and 2012 Scion XB.

The NHP preliminary investigation shows the driver of the Scion was driving eastbound and allowed his vehicle to cross over the double yellow lines into the path of the Ford, causing a head-on collision.

New trail map released by Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition

A new Lake Tahoe bike map has been released by the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition that details the latest trails and points of interest all around the lake with separated bike trails, on-road bike lanes and designated bicycle routes.

The paper map will be available for free at Lake Tahoe area visitor centers and bike shops or can be viewed and downloaded on line www.tahoebike.org/where-to-ride/bike-map/.

Firefighters contain 4th of July fire on Highway 50 at Spooner

Carson City Fire Department, East Fork Fire and Tahoe Douglas Fire responded to a brush fire on the valley side of Highway 50 on Spooner.

The fire was reported at around 12:20 p.m. and said to be around 1-2 miles up Highway 50 on the north side. Smoke and flames are visible at the time.

By 1:07 p.m., firefighters at the wildfire reported the blaze was contained with responding units on scene building a hose line around the fire and mopping up. The cause is under investigation.

Highway 50 at the area of the fire has been closed but is reported open at this time.

Public invited to walk, run and ride on new highway section in Carson City

The community is invited to take part in a free fun walk, run and ride celebrating the upcoming opening of the last leg of the Interstate 580 Carson City Freeway, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced.

While the freeway isn't scheduled to open to vehicles until August, NDOT is going to have an opening ceremony to pedestrians, runners and cyclists on Saturday, July 22 at 9:00 a.m. Participants can arrive at any time from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a self-paced experience on the new freeway.

Visitor from Thailand identified as victim in Lake Tahoe head-on crash

The fatal head-on collision in Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 near Cave Rock Monday is the result of a drunk driver according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

On June 26 at approximately 4:39 p.m., a black 2015 VW Passat driven by a 40-year-old female resident of Carson City was traveling eastbound on the highway at a curve. She crossed over the double yellow line and into westbound traffic where she hit a black 2017 Chrysler minivan head-on.
