Chain controls go up around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - For the first time in months it is snowing in the Sierra and chain controls are up on area roads. The snow hit a few hours later than planned, but, it's here!

As of 10:00 p.m. Wednesday night the following controls are in place:

Highway 50/Echo Summit - From Fred's Place to Meyers: Chains or traction devices are required on all vehicles except four wheel/ all wheel drive vehicles with snow-tread tires on all four wheels. (Four wheel/all wheel drive vehicles must carry traction devices in chain control areas).

Credit card stolen from South Lake Tahoe used at multiple stores

Authorities are looking for a man suspected of using a stolen credit card at the Stateline CVS on November 7 and 10, and at the Carson City Home Depot, Target and Walmart on November 11.

The credit card used to shop was from a purse stolen in South Lake Tahoe on November 3.

The manager at the CVS told deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office the male suspect's name is possibly "Rick."

Major link between Carson City and Reno to close this weekend

NV Energy and the Nevada Department of Transportation are announcing a full closure of Interstate 580 in northern Carson City and Washoe Valley during the morning hours of both Nov. 17 and Nov. 18.

Construction completed at Kahle Community Center

STATELINE, Nev. - A project to replace the roof, siding, interior flooring and add new wall padding at Kahle Community Center is now completed.

Construction was done by Shaheen Beauchamp Builders of Carson City.

The center located off Kingsbury Grade in Stateline is multi-use center with gymnasium, weight room, jogging track and class rooms, as well as a large public park.

Modifications to the roof included removing decorative dormers and all old metal roofing, reframing and adding new metal roofing.

NDOT to close stretch of I-580/US 395 for utility work

There will be a full closure of Interstate 580 in northern Carson City and Washoe Valley during the morning hours of both Nov. 17 and Nov. 18, NV Energy and Nevada Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The names of the two South Lake Tahoe police detectives involved in last Monday's officer involved shooting have been released.

Armed robbery suspect identified as man killed after shooting at police

11/1/18 update: More details have come to light surrounding the officer involved shooting of an armed robbery suspect in Meyers on Monday.

There were three warrants for the arrest of Billy Jo Johnson on Monday, one from each South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County and Carson City. Law enforcement from each agency were working together on their cases in an attempt to locate and arrest the 34-year-old Johnson.

Nevada Gaming Control Board: South Shore casino revenue drops in September

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of September 2018 showed a slight increase over the previous year, posting a gain of 1.26 percent with a "win" of $991,222,034 for casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

Changes to South Lake Tahoe transit services

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - As planned, the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is changing transit routes and schedules starting November 1, 2018.

As announced in August, TTD announced an increase of services to improve access to neighborhoods including Meyers, more frequent services on busy routes and reduction of routes not meeting required performance measures.

Car used in Carson City armed robbery stolen from South Lake Tahoe

The car used by the man who robbed a Carson City frozen yogurt shop on Monday was stolen in South Lake Tahoe the previous day according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on October 22, an unknown man walked into the Frutilandia yogurt and ice cream shop on Highway 50 East and pointed a handgun at an employee, demanded cash, then fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Public comment sought on future Interstate 11 from Las Vegas to Northern Nevada

South Shore casinos continue to show gains in reported revenues

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of August 2018 dropped when compared to the same month in 2017, posting a loss of 7.74 percent with a "win" of $912,980,589 for casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

On the South Shore, the $26,789,111 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up by 4.74 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $9,650,518, up 2.77 percent.

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

Fire dangers prompt ban on target shooting in National Forest

Due to extremely dry vegetation and very high fire danger, recreational target shooting is prohibited in the Eldorado National Forest until at least October 9, 2018. In the Lake Tahoe Basin, it is not prohibited but they suggest those wishing to target shoot go to one of the legal ranges in Carson City or Gardnerville for safety reasons.

Howie Nave takes his comedy to Carson City this weekend

Comedian Howie Nave is taking his show on the road, this time to the Carson Comedy Club inside the Carson Nugget September 7 and 8.

Many around South Lake Tahoe know Howie from his number one morning drive radio show "Howie's Morning Rush" on KRLT-FM (krltfm.com) and from his years of comedy on the South Shore. He has long been a staple in the world of stand up. How long? There's a plaque with his name on it near the entrance of South Lake Tahoe that's he's called home now for almost 18 years.

Nevada Guard to commemorate IHOP victims in 5k run/walk

CARSON CITY — It has been seven years since shots rang out at the Carson City International House of Pancakes (IHOP) restaurant, leaving four people dead and thrusting the capital city into tragedy still felt today. Of the four people killed, three were National Guard members and the fourth was a South Lake Tahoe resident.

On the South Shore, the $29,940,267 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was up by 25.52 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $9,559,069, up .31 percent.

Motorhome leads law enforcement on chase from South Lake Tahoe to Gardnerville

A motorhome being driven recklessly through South Lake Tahoe and Stateline led law enforcement on a high-speed ride along Highway 50, over Spooner Summit and into the Carson Valley before it crashed into a building in Gardnerville, Nev.

At 10:30 p.m. Sunday, August 26, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO) was alerted about the 1997 Airstream motorhome speeding through South Lake Tahoe, running red lights and traveling without headlamps on. They saw it as it crossed into Nevada traveling 55 mph in a 35-mph zone when an enforcement stop was initiated.

South Lake Tahoe man arrested in Carson City for alleged 3rd DUI

A 52-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested in the area of North Curry and West Spear streets for felony suspicion of third DUI, driving on a revoked license, and following too close, a Carson City sheriff's deputy said.

Ragan Allen Stacey was arrested after deputies responded to a two vehicle crash Saturday evening. Dispatch advised the driver of one of the vehicles was walking away from the crash, and deputies were able to locate him on North Curry Street.

Ski and west shore buses on the transit hit list; service added to Meyers

With a goal of being sustainable, Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) is changing the way they provide transit in Lake Tahoe starting November 1, 2018.

"This is a reboot, not an end," said Carl Hasty, TTD District Manager at the District's board meeting Friday. "We'll all feel some pain but it's not the end."

There will be some cut routes, reduced hours, elimination of winter shuttles along with an addition of service to Meyers. Buses will now operate 14 hours a day instead of the current 20 hours.

Widespread haze and chance of thunderstorms in 7-day forecast for South Lake Tahoe

While staying above normal, temperatures will cool down slightly over the weekend and early next week, espcially in the record breaking areas of Reno and Carson City. Areas of smoke and haze will continue to degrade air quality, especially north and east of the Donnell Fire. There will be a slight chance of thunderstorms well south of Highway 50 this weekend with chances increasing and spreading farther north next week.

Update: Smoke continues to come to Lake Tahoe from fires in the west

A number of fires across northern and eastern California continue to bring hazy conditions and degraded air quality to northeast California, the Sierra, and western Nevada. According to the National Weather Service in Reno, areas at greatest risk for unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality are from Sonora Pass to South Lake Tahoe and Carson City.

Keeping regions safe: Pre-positioning of firefighters this week in Lake Tahoe

For just the second time, fire crews from California communities came together and stationed themselves in a community other than their own on orders from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services(Cal OES).

A red flag warning was up for the Lake Tahoe Basin Friday and Saturday, with high winds, high temperatures and low humidity in the forecast making the situation ripe for a large fire.

Smoke in Lake Tahoe Basin coming from Northern California fires

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Friday morning started off clear and sunny, but by mid-morning smoke from from several California fires filled the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The smoke Friday has been a combination of the Carr Fire, the Mendocino Complex fires (Ranch Fire and River Fire) and the two western El Dorado County fires according to the USFS office in South Lake Tahoe. The Whaleback Fire and Ferguson Fire are also burning north and south of the lake.

South Shore casino gaming revenue drops in June

Gaming revenue for the State of Nevada during the month of June was up 4.17 percent in 2018 when compared to the same month in 2017, bringing in a "win" of $933,003,709 to casinos in the state, according to figures released by the Nevada Gaming Control Board today.

On the South Shore, the $18,717,280 in gaming revenue earned by the casinos was down 8.65 percent from 2017. The Carson City and Carson Valley had a "win" of $9,028,184, up 7.34 percent.

In May, the gaming revenue for the South Shore was $18,022,230.

Mars to shine brighter than it has in more than a decade; Viewing party Saturday

If you've looked at the night sky lately you've probably noticed what looks like a very bright (and red) star. It's not a star though, it's Mars, and it's shining brighter than it has in more than a decade.

From July 27 until July 30, it will be Mars Opposition, the time when Mars and the sun are on directly opposite sides of Earth. It will appear Mars is rising in the east just as the sun sets in the west.

Mars will be closer to the Earth than normal during this time.

Those two things are making the Red Planet appear brighter than usual.

$1.6M band-aid given to TTD for South Lake Tahoe bus service

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has given Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) $1.6M to help continue bus service from Carson City to the Carson Valley and on to Lake Tahoe, but more is still needed to help TTD continue service both at the lake and in the valley.

This festival will be held on the Valhalla Grand Lawn at Tallac Historic Site on Saturday and Sunday, July 28 - 29, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Severe thunderstorm warning for Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Alpine County Sunday evening

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for South Lake Tahoe, Meyers, Glenbrook, Alpine County, Place County, El Dorado County, Washoe County, Douglas County an Western Carson City from 6:06 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. Sunday, July 22.

Radar has indicated a strong cell sitting over South Lake Tahoe and Emerald Bay, bringing a chance of quarter size hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph. In heavy hit areas, expect hail damage to vehicles along with wind damage to roofs, siding, fencing and trees.

Another strong thunderstorm cell is above Kirkwood.

New pedestrian beacon lights on US50 in Marla Bay area of Lake Tahoe

It an attempt to make the crossing of US 50 in the Marla Bay area safer, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has completed a $294,000 safety project.

Year-round changes to Harrah's and Harveys parking policy

Harrah's Tahoe and Harveys will be putting into place a new year-round parking policy, much as the other properties in the Caesars Entertainment family, starting July 30, 2018. It will now cost to park when going to the casino for food and entertainment, gambling and events.

Last year the two casinos started charging for parking during special events and concerts at the outdoor arena, then this year Harrah's started to block parking for Heavenly Village and kept out those not utilizing the casino.

A Musical Jamboree at the Dangberg Home Ranch

Harrah's and Harveys employees join others in donating fans to seniors

Employees of Harrah's Harveys Lake Tahoe, along with fans of KOLO 8 TV, have joined together to help Carson City seniors stay cool this summer with their purchase of almost 100 fans.

Jenny Haas, human resources and information systems analyst for Harrah’s Harveys Lake Tahoe and chair of the company’s HERO (Harrah’s Harveys Employees Reaching Out) program, said the company does “Senior Appreciation Quarter” each year where employees donate to senior-related causes.

Chance of thunderstorms return to Lake Tahoe next weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Smoke from the Ferguson Fire outside Yosemite is moved into Lake Tahoe and Carson City area today and more smoke is expected again early Monday. As of Sunday night, the fire has burned 4,310 acres and is two percent contained. An evacuation advisory is in place for the Western Yosemite area.

High pressure will build overhead and bring very hot conditions to Western Nevada Tuesday through Wednesday and warm conditions to the mountains. The high will
begin to move east on Thursday with thunderstorm chances increasing along with gradually cooling temperatures.

Chautauquan Larry Lippmann will portray notorious stagecoach robber Black Bart at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 18 at 6:30 pm.

Stagecoach robber Black Bart was one of the most famous bandits of the old West. Between 1875 and 1883 he successfully robbed twenty-eight Wells Fargo stagecoaches without harming anyone and without taking a dime from any passenger. The story of how he was so successful and how he was eventually apprehended, ranks among the great legends of all time.

Kitten adoption day at Michael Hohl Honda
