Revised Meyers Area Plan Revealed; Community Workshop on June 26th

The Meyers Area Plan is a long term land use and zoning plan for the Meyers Community that will realize the Meyers Community Vision, assist in achieving and maintaining TRPA’s Environmental Threshold Carrying Capacities, implement the Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Sustainable Communities Strategy, and implement the policy direction of both the Regional Plan and General Plan.

El Dorado County Supervisor Ray Nutting Ousted From Office

During Ray Nutting's sentencing on six misdemeanor charges stemming from loans received for the purpose of getting bailed out of jail, Judge Timothy Buckley ordered Nutting to vacate his County Supervisor seat for District 2.

Buckley also sentenced him to three years of probation and 30 days of community service.

Candidates Sue Novasel, Kenny Curtzwiler and Angela Swanson were the only County Supervisor candidates to respond, and Douglas County Sheriff candidates Ron Pierini and Dave Brady were the only Sheriff candidates to respond. El Dorado County Supervisors Hold Off on Action Concerning Ray Nutting

On May 14th, El Dorado County Supervisor Ray Nutting was found guilty on six misdemeanors involving illegal and undocumented loans from county employees and a county contractor.

Nutting was found not guilty on three felony charges including filing false documents, perjury and approving conflict-of-interest contracts.

The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors met with legal counsel Wednesday to discuss whether Supervisor Ray Nutting was suspended from the office of county supervisor by operation of law because of jury verdicts on May 14, 2014 that found him guilty of six misdemeanors.

El Dorado County Supervisors Candidate Forum May 6

Be an informed voter on June 3 by attending events that feature the candidates so that you can hear their views and watch them in action.

One such event will be an El Dorado County Supervisor Candidate's Forum hosted jointly by the Tahoe Regional Youth Professionals and the Tahoe Chamber. The two groups will present the forum at the California Conservation Corps on May 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Representatives of the TahoeChamber Government Affairs Committee and TRYP will moderate the discussion in hopes to illuminate candidates' stances of key business issues.

South Lake Tahoe Hunger Issues Addressed in Meeting and Food Distribution

The Food Bank of El Dorado County was in South Lake Tahoe on Wednesday to accomplish two things: Distribute emergency food supplies to locals in need, and to hold a meeting with South Lake Tahoe agencies who assist people living with hunger.

In 2013, the El Dorado County Food Bank distributed 1.8 million pounds of food to county residents with a value of $3,000,000. The agency is not county funded and gets their food from donations, private donors, growers, businesses and the USDA.

Human Trafficking in El Dorado County on the Rise; Presentation at County Supervisor's Meeting Tuesday

Incidents of human trafficking and the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) are becoming more prevalent in the County of El Dorado and more and more common throughout the country.

From 2010 to 2012, the El Dorado County Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) was aware of 3 CSEC cases. From 2013 to present, HHSA is aware of 15 additional CSEC cases, most of which are children in the foster care and/or probation system.

Six Will Vie for Open El Dorado County Supervisor District 5 Spot , So Far

The deadline to turn in all required paperwork in the El Dorado County Supervisor race for District 5 is Friday, March 7 at 5 p.m. So far six candidates have provided their "SOQ" Statement of Qualifications. A seventh candidate, Michelle Sweeney, has taken out papers and may still turn them in before Friday's deadline.

Meyers Residents Turn Out to Fight For their Community

Information was circulating that Meyers was going to be taken over by large parking garages and other unwanted development including a Athlete's Village or Basecamp type feature, much of what was created by a now buried Catalyst Plan. "The Catalyst Project is dead," El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago told the packed house at the California Conservation Corp (CCC) building in Meyers on Wednesday night.

South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Angela Swanson Cleared of Wrongdoing by DA's Office

The El Dorado County District Attorney's Office cleared South Lake Tahoe City Councilwoman Angela Swanson of any criminal wrongdoing in a letter sent to the City Council.

No public announcement was made to the media and the DA's office hasn't responded to a request by SouthTahoeNow.com to see a copy of the letter.

Angela Swanson Announces Run for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors

South Lake Tahoe Councilwoman Angela Swanson has declared her candidacy for El Dorado County Supervisor District 5. "There is no better time to jump in," said Swanson of her announcement. "I am in the final year of my council term and will leave office having accomplished many of my goals and with an in-depth knowledge of the key issues affecting the district." Swanson cites economic redevelopment, smart growth and community investment as her top priorities along with building cohesiveness within the newly expanded district.

$43.1 Million Highway Project Officially Dedicated

South Shore gets chance to comment on final draft of Lake Tahoe Regional Plan Update

Public comment will be taken today, Thursday, Nov. 15 on the final draft of the Regional Plan Update prepared by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

The joint meeting of the Advisory Planning Commission and the Governing Board will be held at Harveys Lake Tahoe in Stateline. The meeting will include recommendations from the Regional Plan Update Committee on possible new proposals to the Regional Plan Update discussed in committee the day before. Public comment on the final draft documents will begin at 1 p.m. The Board is expected to take action on the Plan on December 12.

June Lake reacts to resort closure

There is no shortage of gloom in June Lake.
When Mammoth Mountain Ski Area announced last week (June 21) that it would close down the June Mountain ski area at least until the end of the 2012-13 ski season, the reaction was swift and tense.
"I think it’s been pretty clear the entire eight years since I was elected that this is exactly what I have been working to avoid,” said June Lake’s county supervisor, Vikki Bauer.

Lake Tahoe cyclists look to break world record today

Today is the day: South Lake Tahoe bicycle group Slow Rollers is asking the community to come out to its second annual Spirit Bike Parade today and an attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records by forming the longest single line of bicycles. To beat the record, now held by the city of Davis of 916 bicycles, South Lake Tahoe will have to produce 917 bicycles or more. The event begins at 4 p.m. with a start up at the old Miller's Outpost, South Shore Bikes, 955 Emerald Bay Road. Get there early to register.

Washoe offers sacred name 'Tahnu Leweh' for Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe

With the Washoe Tribe's offering and support of El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, a move is underway to rename Lakeview Commons Park at South Lake Tahoe in time for an official June 20 dedication.
Given its 6,000 year history, the Washoe Tribe has presented the name Tahnu Leweh (Pronounced Tah-New Lay-Way) which, in native language, means "all the people's place." It is a name the Tribe would like to gift to El Dorado County and South Lake Tahoe as a symbol of peace, prosperity and goodness, said Darrel Cruz, Culture and Language Director for the Washoe Tribe.

Group works to find and name South Lake Tahoe area peak in memory of fallen soldiers

At the urging of Congressman Tom McClintock, R-Calif., a committee has been formed to find an unnamed mountain peak seen from South Lake Tahoe that will be dedicated to fallen U.S. soldiers from the area.
Congressman McClintock's office approached the U.S. Forest Service about opportunities for a memorial. Forest Supervisor Nancy Gibson came up with the idea of naming an unnamed peak as one of the options for a memorial on National Forest System lands.

Meyers Community Plan to be discussed at April 4 meeting

A community meeting, hosted by El Dorado County Supervisor Norma Santiago, will take place on Wednesday, April 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Environmental Science Magnet School (formerly Meyers Elementary School). This meeting will be a first step towards implementing an update of the Meyers Community Plan.
