Don’t wear underwear under bike shorts. I’ve had this conversation with several patients and it's worth mentioning, loudly and boldly. Bike shorts are supposed to be worn commando and without undergarments. It decreases chafing from seams and makes the ride more pleasant. I promise!

Canadian Leah Kirchmann wins Stage 2 of Amgen Tour in SLT
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/09/2015 - 4:30pmPeople lined the 25-mile Amgen race course from Heavenly to Meyers on Saturday, all waiting to catch a glimpse of the top women cyclists as they quickly passed by.
There were great spectating opportunities, and many locals and visitors took advantage of them, from Ski Run Blvd, along Pioneer Trail to South Upper Truckee.
The course was much different that Friday's trip around the lake, but still a tough one with plenty of climbs, downhills and turns.
After two trips around the course, Canadian Leah Kirchmann emerged the victor, just edging out American Lauren Komanski.
Final kilometer told the story during Stage 1 of SLT Amgen race
Submitted by paula on Fri, 05/08/2015 - 8:30pm"The way they're dropping off you'd think the Donner Party was back," were the words of the announcer as he reported on the racers heading up Keller Road during the final kilometer of Friday's Amgen race around Lake Tahoe. "There are bodies everywhere," he joked, commenting on the final uphill portion of the race just before the finish line.
After 73.5 miles, the last .6 mile separated the group of women who had stayed in a close pack as they spent three hours racing around the lake.

Countdown to Amgen: Parking and driving impacts
Submitted by paula on Sat, 05/02/2015 - 10:23pmSome roadways in South Lake Tahoe will have restricted parking from Thursday, May 7 at 5 p.m. through Sunday, May 10 in order to accommodate the women cyclists racing in Amgen Tour of California events being held locally.
Street parking is not allowed during these time periods in the following areas with-in the city limits:
· Pioneer Trail from the Intersection of Hwy 50 in the Stateline area to the City Limits by Black Bart Avenue
· Keller Road from Pioneer Trail to Saddle Road
· Tamarack Ave from Pioneer Trail to Blackwood Ave
Honor Ride Lake Tahoe helps injured vets through cycling

Cyclists of all ages and levels are invited to take part in Ride 2 Recovery's Tahoe Honor Ride on Friday, May 8 as part of the Amgen Tour of California.
The Honor Ride Lake Tahoe is a 19-mile route that departs from Heavenly Mountain Resort’s California Base Lodge and takes participants along Pioneer Trail toward Meyers before returning to Heavenly. Post-event celebrations will include the Amgen Tour of California festivities with vendors, food, drinks, DJs, and cheering on the professional athletes as they complete Stage 1.
Top women cyclists coming to Lake Tahoe; Amgen Tour course goes through town

Fourteen teams consisting of 84 of the top professional women racers will be in town for the race May 8-9, 2015. The racers consist of Olympic medalists, World Champions, Tour de France competitors and other cyclists from the National and International field.
Many of the teams have already been in the area getting ready for the Lake Tahoe stop on their tour. As we get closer to May 8, more of the participants will be in town.
Highway 89 construction this summer worries business owners
Submitted by paula on Wed, 04/01/2015 - 10:07pmWhile the summertime tourist to South Lake Tahoe should only be slightly affected, business owners along Highway 89 are worried about their livelihood with overnight road construction and blocked driveways.
During Thursday evening's Caltrans informational meeting at South Tahoe High, several owners of lodging properties, restaurants, sports and retail stores spoke about their concerns during the project which will last from mid-April to mid-October in 2015 and could even extend into the 2017 building season.
TRPA Board approves Heavenly's Epic Discovery project
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/27/2015 - 4:09pmHeavenly's Epic Discovery project passed their biggest hurdle Thursday as the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency's (TRPA) Governing Board unanimously approved the newest year-round recreational experience in South Lake Tahoe. With it, comes a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for locals and visitors alike. Epic Discovery will include new zip lines, sky cycle tree canopy tours, a mountain bike park and trails, ropes courses, and interpretive and educational tours to teach visitors about the Lake Tahoe Region’s cultural and environmental resources.

BMW Happy Tooth, a UCI Women's Cycling Team, will be in the Lake Tahoe area until April 5, scouting the Amgen Tour of California courses and acclimatizing to the altitude. The team will be in attendance at the annual Tahoe Chamber Business Expo and available to discuss the race, training, expectations, etc. while at the Tahoe South Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority booth.

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park
Submitted by paula on Tue, 03/03/2015 - 11:44pmBoulder, Colorado has one. Portland, Oregon has one. Even Roseville and Truckee, California have one. If plans go as they appeared to during a presentation at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, South Lake Tahoe will soon have one.
What is it?
"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.
Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.
Volunteers needed for Amgen Tour's South Lake Tahoe competition

The two Lake Tahoe stages cover a total of 124 miles with the first on Friday, May 8, circumnavigating the Lake; the second is two-laps through South Lake Tahoe and Meyers, Calif., the town seven miles west of South Shore on Saturday, May 9.
South Lake Tahoe to be start and finish line for Amgen Tour women's race

Fourteen teams will take part in the three stage cycling competition which will have both start and finish lines at Heavenly Mountain Resort's California Main Lodge
The race is sanctioned by Union Cycliste International, denoting the highest level for a non-World Cup event.

South Lake Tahoe's Charles Nelson named to California Bicycle Advisory Committee

Formed by Caltrans in 1992, the CBAC is composed of members who represent various California agencies and organizations throughout the state. The committee provides guidance to Caltrans on bicycle issues and reviews and comments on bicycle-related proposals.
Nevada unveils "Share the Road" license plate to support cyclists and pedestrians

South Lake Tahoe to host Amgen Tour's 2015 women's events
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/20/2014 - 5:31pmOrganizers of the 10th anniversary of the Amgen Tour of California announced today that South Lake Tahoe has been chosen to host the first two stages of the women's portion of the race in 2015.
Women's cycling events continue to grow in the Amgen Tour which is America's largest race. The three-day women’s stage race will travel through South Lake Tahoe on May 8-9, 2015 and conclude in Sacramento on May 10, 2015, the same day of the overall start of the men’s race.
Bike Way Finding Signs Being Tested in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/08/2014 - 10:27pmHave you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.
There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.
According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."
Expect surge of cyclists on South Lake Tahoe roads Sunday morning
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/07/2014 - 12:05amThe 12th Annual Tour de Tahoe – Bike Big Blue is being held on Sunday, September 6. The participating cyclists are taking off from the parking lot of MontBleu every 15 minutes between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and riding clockwise around Lake Tahoe back to MontBleu.
For people not wanting to ride all 72 miles there is a 35 mile Boat and Bike where participants ride the Tahoe Queen from the Ski Run Marina to the North Shore at 7:15 a.m. From there they will ride clockwise back to the South Shore.
New bikeways map released by Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coaltion
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/21/2014 - 10:46pmLocals and visitors alike enjoy riding bike in Lake Tahoe on a daily basis, and there is now a new tool for cyclists to use: a newly updated bicycle trail map showing all of the trails on the North and South shores.
With the addition of new trails around the basin, the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition (LTBC) found it necessary to update the Lake Tahoe Bikeways Map. The newest stretch of trail from Fallen Leaf Lake to Baldwin Beach didn't make the printing deadline according to Ty Polastri, LTBC Project Director.
New bike trail from Fallen Leaf Lake to Lake Tahoe opens
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/16/2014 - 10:22pmThere is a new way to enjoy two lakes with just a quick bike ride along the bike trail just completed by the U.S. Forest Service.
The Fallen Leaf Bike Path connects cyclists from the Fallen Leaf Lake Campground to the Pope Baldwin National Recreation Trail. The trail offers riders a safe and exciting alternative.
As reported by South Tahoe Now in April, the new trail also provided installation of bmps, upgrades, reconstruction and relocation of adjacent unauthorized trails.
South Lake Tahoe bike parade sets sight on world record

The South Lake Tahoe Slow Rollers are asking the local community to help them attempt breaking the world record for people riding bikes in a single line, which is 917. During the first attempt two years ago there were plenty of cyclists, 1188, but many people rode two or more across and sometimes had gaps in the line so it was too hard for officials to certify the ride.
New trail created to connect High Meadows to Tahoe Rim Trail
Submitted by paula on Fri, 08/15/2014 - 11:57pmA new three mile long trail has been completed that now connects High Meadows to the Tahoe Rim Trail. The new path, called the Monument Pass Trail, is located in the southeast end of South Lake Tahoe at the Cold Creek Trail at High Meadows. The trail is multi-use and will be enjoyed by cyclists and hikers.
The new trail is part of a larger group of trail projects known as the Trail Access and Travel Management Plan (Trail ATM), a process used by the Forest Service to plan, review, design and construct trail systems in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

The Slow Rollers Bicycle Club of South Lake Tahoe is holding a Poker Run on Sunday, June 15. The participant with the best poker hand will win a new bike!
Signups are at MacDuff's at noon and the event starts at 1 p.m. For $15 cyclists are entered for the day's events including a BBQ. Prizes include a new Beach Cruiser, a longboard and dragons.
Waterline Project in the State Streets Area of South Lake Tahoe; Tahoe Keys Traffic Impacts

This project will improve water quality, quantity, pressures and, most importantly, will enhance firefighting capability in the State Streets neighborhood. The project will consist of installation of a 12” main on Tahoe Keys Blvd. and 6” mains on Idaho Ave., Wyoming Ave., Montana Ave., Utah Ave., Colorado Ave., Arizona Ave., Texas Ave., and Jeffery St. In addition to the water mains, fire hydrants will be installed at approximately 500 foot intervals to provide better fire protection.
Cycle Through Wine Country to Support Keeping Tahoe Blue

National Winter Trails Day at Van Sickle State Park

As part of National Winter Trails Day, the Tahoe Rim Trail Association will host free guided hikes on Jan. 12, 2013 from 10am to 2pm through the newly opened Van Sickle State Park behind Harrah’s Casino at Stateline South Shore Lake Tahoe.
There will also be outdoor gear demonstrations, raffle prizes, and a Warming Party at Explore Tahoe after the hikes.
This South Lake Tahoe event is a family-friendly introduction to snowshoeing and to winter opportunities on the Tahoe Rim Trail. Participants will have to bring their own shoes, snacks, water and warm clothing.

More than 3,100 volunteers are needed to successfully execute the first full-distance IRONMAN® event in California since 2001 - IRONMAN Lake Tahoe, which is scheduled for September 22, 2013.
World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), owner and operator of the IRONMAN Series, will host an IRONMAN Lake Tahoe Volunteer Meeting Monday, September 17, 7 p.m., at the North Tahoe Event Center, 8318 North Lake Boulevard, Kings Beach, California.
Of the 3,100 volunteers needed to provide behind-the-scene logistics and ground execution, 100 will serve as captains to ensure a safe and fun event.

To raise public awareness of how to live in harmony with Tahoe’s iconic black bears, a team of cyclist will be giving bear hugs on September 9th at spots around Lake Tahoe as part of Tahoe Expo. Those gathered at Sand Harbor for Beats for Bears will receive the hug and pass it along. The cyclists will arrive between 1 and 3 pm when Liz Broscoe will be holding the community drum circle.
